| Post subject: My cellphone |
I need to use my cellphone here in Shanghai, but the thing is that I use it as CHN CUGSM, and I can phone people up here but it costs as much as me calling to China from Sweden, also it cost for people in SH to phone me up, (to pay the same rate as they are calling all the way to SWE).
I heard from an old thread that I can go to some dodgy store and they can lock it up for me? Because I have a contract with 3G back in Sweden.
if they lock it up, i can buy a sim card and use it on my phone...
so where do i find those dodgy stores? |

You've gotta unlock it Sienna, it's currently locked
I don't know about here but in the US a lot of the cell phone places that wern't affiliated with a specific provider would unlock your phone for you. I don't think it's illegal, but it voids your warrenty I think. Check out some places like that here, I'd say a place that just says Cell Phones and not like Motorola or China Mobile on the sign outside. If they don't do it they'll probably be able to tell you who does. If that doesn't work I know there were services on the internet in the US that you could mail your phone in and they'd return it unlocked. Cost about $50 US I think, but it should be much much cheaper here (I'm pretty sure they just hack your phone's firmware)
Hope that helps! |

Every street corner and in between. Actually all those "hole in the wall" shops can sell you a local SIM. |

She needs more than than just a SIM though, if you buy a phone on a plan from a service supplier they like to "lock" the firmware which makes any other carrier's SIM card useless in it until you "unlock" it. It's a dirty cheap tactic.
Seaweed is right though once you unlock it you'll need a local SIM, you could always just pick up a cheap local cell if you want to skip unlocking your current phone, I did that because I've got verizon back home and it's not GSM |

Not true, Moss. I have a cell phone and 2 SIM cards, one from China Mobile and the other Unicom. I can switch them anytime I want and both of them work perfectly. Not sure about a Swedish cellphone though. |

I have a cell phone (nokia) from Orange is Spain and I unlocked it by myself for free over the internet. I bought a China Mobile SIM when I got here and it works fine. I did this in Spanish but if you put into google something like unlock cellphone you can do a search and maybe find something like I did. |
