Post subject: VPNs to Stateside networks

Has anybody had any trouble with VPNs "dropping mysteriously" going to U.S. networks ?

Mine is usually ok, but now and again it will magically drop and gives me the "consult the switch log" error msg.

?????????????????

Oh and second question regarding VPNs - if me and my gf are using wireless from home with two laptops and she's online - is it even possible for me to use VPN ?

mine's rock steady here in Thailand, but have the occasional drop
http://www.strongvpn.com is what I use

Yes on the question, but it has to do with the router and your VPN service.
StrongVPN would have a charge for a 2nd VPN Account + you would need
a VPN router that could do do it, like the D-Link DSL-2640T

So you can 'activate' a VPN from a notebook wirelessly through a router that someone else is already on [they are not using VPN] and not bump them off or get denied access ??

Man it's late and that sounds convoluted to me... make sense ?

You can each connect to the vpn, and still use it. Depends what vpn software the other side is using, really, and whether it supports NAT or not.
If it doesn't then you are screwed.

If you have vpn software at the router, then both your connections will be vpn'd (assuming its connected).
If you have vpn software on your laptop, then only your connection will be vpn'd, unless she subsequently logs on.

Its nicer to have the vpn in the router, as hardware is easier, although the pricing is a little silly sometimes. Cisco, i'm looking at you.

Its a shame Linksys/Cisco killed the WRT54G series, there were some people putting hamachi and other vpn software on those, which made them quite promising entry level units for point to point networking, without having to spring for dynamic dns service (which china mainly blocks, unless you use the internal ones), or static ip address.

I'm using that Router above with 5 StrongVPN accounts, 2 Laptops and 3 desktops no problem. I never did try the VPN router
but I kind of like the ability of going on and off the VPN easily from each system.

This one.

She's on already using no VPN - just to the dirty net through her internal wireless - then I log on and turn my VPN on and boom... problems.

since HK government don't block any web site, would a VPN going to HK instead of USA be faster?

Hi HC: does using the VPN from Witopia require me to change any setting in our office router or my laptop?
I use the LAN cable while i am working in the office, does the Internet speed actually slow down by using VPN, do i leave the VPN on all the time, or only use it when i feel the site is getting block by China. and how does that effect my e-mail on outlook? sorry for all the questions Very Happy

DesertSpider,
With my VPN (Cisco VPN) it is fine as far as others on my router keeping access when I VPN, only time I have problems is when two people try to VPN on the router, one will get kicked off because they are on a single IP.
I did have a question, when you VPN from home, how is the speed? Is it enough to have a decent RDP (Remote Desktop) to a computer on the remote network?
Thanks

Cisco VPN Client, the part about the router was refering to my router at home (Linksys), sorry that was ambiguous

Sorry, been in the States for a couple weeks. My router is AboveCable ???? white box, orange lettering.

Yeah, my IT sec. buddy from the U.S. said the same thing about VPN'ing through home router. Speed is decent, I / we can RDP to networks here no problem, but when ppl from the States try to drive my machine remotely - it's possible, just some 'decent' lag [their end, not mine].

I wish I could jack my speed up something fierce, I'd even pay for the service if a pipeline big enough was available.

Don't know about something fierce but faster connections are available. Costs a pretty penny tho. About sharing a VPN'ned connection, there are ways. For remote desktop use, well ... think of it this way - we could be using 2400 baud modems Rolling Eyes Have you tried VNC instead ? Might be a smidge more responsive. Hard to do much about that big gollywompus in Beijing.

Post subject: Multiple VPN via Router

Hi,

I realise this thread is a bit old, but am hoping someone out there has recent info on the topic ..

I am in Beijing and have a D-Link DI-624+A Wireless Router with 4 pcs attached. We have a secured ADSL 1 Mbps connection supplied by China Netcom (http://www.bj.cnc.cn/)

I want to set up simultaneous, continuous (and faster?) VPN connection to the Internet via the Router. I am not worried about our users sharing the secure connection with the same log-in, and would hope the log-in can be automatic on connection.

So, If I buy a Witopia PersonalVPN will we be able to set that up through the router or does it have to have it's own account on each Windows pc? We can upgrade the router to that D-Link DSL-2640T or the latest version that has built in VPN if necessary. Does another VPN provider offer this kind of set-up?

Witopia have told me their Cloakbox (http://www.witopia.net/cart) may work, but not for shipping outside the US.

Will we then have a masked IP address, secure online banking and access to sites otherwise blocked in China?

Any advice much appreciated.
Andy

After I read your post, I found some VPN user is for visiting blocked site.
A fast and stable "p r o x y" server is hard to find, is it?
But I am using it with fine speed and update it often. Just PM me, if you need. I don't want to post it here because I don't want it be blocked.
