| Post subject: Mama Mia!!!! =( |
so i get home the other night and my wife says "honey, i just got us some tickets to go see Mamma Mia!! (the abba thing that's gonna play here). we're going with so and so." they weren't cheap either.
she looked so happy i didn't have the heart to tell her I'd rather go take a swim in the huangpu river. (hope she doesn't have an account on this site i'm not aware of).
like me showing up at home with a pair of drag racing tickets.
abba here we come. someone remember to drink a beer for me on that night.
just whining out loud. sorry abba fans. |

Wonderer - "bovvered?" Like I care knowing what the men on this forum are like anyway....
Agree with rachel_milne - I also saw it in London and it was a great evening. Not a huge ABBA fan also, but the storyline was amusing and entertaining. |

Mamma Mia is fantastic! No matter if you like Abba or not, you are bound to have a great time! I've seen it twice and loved it each time!
And if my boyfriend dared to show up with a pair of tickets to some dumb motorsport, I would probably feel the same as you... but trust me, you will have a better time that you thought possible! |

I'm sorry, but if you care to admit it or not, most people on this forum will know a couple of Abba tunes. Going to the show 7/27 and taking the my two young parrotheads!! There will probably be an Itunes download or two after the show!! |

I would love to see it. Normally not into stuff like this, but I guess over here you have to be happy with what's on offer and can't be picky |

another thing is i think i only know the same 3 or 4 abba songs that everyone else knows:
dancing queen
take a chance on me
and the one line to mama mia that goes - mama mia here i go again, ma ma ma ma ma mia.
one other i know the tune and some of the words but not the title.
so . . does that mean those of us who are like me will be clueless the rest of the hour or more of the show?
street cd seller rummaging time? and to think all those times i passed up the abba greatest hits cd for 5 rmb |

Quote from the official website http://www.mamma-mia.com/
"A mother. A daughter. 3 possible dads.
And a trip down the aisle you'll never forget!
Over 30 million people all around the world have fallen in love with the characters,
the story and the music that make MAMMA MIA! the ultimate feel-good show!
Writer Catherine Johnson's sunny, funny tale unfolds on a Greek island paradise.
On the eve of her wedding, a daughter's quest to discover the identity of her father
brings 3 men from her mother's past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.
The story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs propels this enchanting tale of love,
laughter and friendship, and every night everyone’s having the time of their lives!"
Nuff said? |

I dragged my husband to see it. He normally hates shows and musicals, and is NOT an abba fan. But he actually enjoyed it. The atmosphere was great, it was funny, and entertaining. It's better than your average musical! |

oh wow..didn't even notice that! great!
anyway, back on topic...go with an open mind, and you might surprise yourself!
where is it showing? I went to see lion king here, but the set wasn't as good as in london or hk but since mama mia is less about the sets and more about the story and singing, it'll be great! |

Mmm... I can see why women love this show, and also why men do not. Am I alone here?
From today's http://www.shanghaidaily.com
The setting is a Greek island where 20-year-old Sophie is due to be married. Her mom, Donna, is there, but her father isn't ... because she's never met him. So Sophie snoops in her mom's diary, chooses three former lovers as likely candidates and invites them to the wedding, hoping she can just figure it out when she sees them.
"A musical of the size and success of 'Mama Mia' doesn't happen overnight," says Judy Craymer, executive producer of "Mama Mia!"
"The story begins 22 years ago when I first met Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, the song-writing geniuses behind ABBA. These were the men who had written 'Dancing Queen,' one of the greatest pop songs of all time but it was another of their songs 'The Winner Takes It All' that first suggested to me the potential of an original musical using their classic compositions. The lyrics tell a roller-coaster story of love and loss: It is extraordinarily theatrical," she says.
The musical boasts 22 of ABBA's greatest hits such as "Dancing Queen," "I Have a Dream," "Voulez-Vous" and "Take a Chance on Me." Now a worldwide sensation, "Mama Mia" has Broadway audiences singing and dancing in the aisles nightly.
Craymer recently revealed that Benny and Bjorn were understandably a little unsure of her intentions at first.
"I explained the project would not be a tribute show or the 'ABBA Story,' but a truly original book musical," says Craymer. "They were not 100 percent convinced but they didn't absolutely close the door and I took hope. I sat on the floor of my apartment listening to ABBA's records late into the night. I was driving my neighbors to despair but I was more and more certain of my idea. In 1995 my tenacity finally paid off. Bjorn said, 'If you can find the right writer and story, well, let's see what happens'," says Craymer.
She later found the writer Catherine Johnson, telling her that the lyrics could not change and the story should be a contemporary, ironic, romantic comedy.
"If she listened carefully to ABBA's songs, she would notice how they fell into two different generations - the slightly younger, playful songs like 'Honey, Honey' and 'Dancing Queen' and the more mature, emotional songs such as 'The Winner Takes It All' and 'Knowing Me, Knowing You'," says Craymer. "The idea of a cross-generational love-story was devised.
"It was unusual, if not unheard of, for three women to be the collaborative creative force behind what was to become such a commercial success," she adds. "From a personal point of view, I think it redressed the balance and had a great nurturing effect on the production.
"We were all happy to jump in and make the tea. Appropriately, 'Mama Mia!' features three strong women in the story. Their characters are completely different - slightly bossy, a bit chaotic, extremely practical, and very high maintenance! We have a lot of laughs about who is who in real life, and, as time goes by, it's a little worrying that we have become even more like those characters on stage." |

tickets run from rmb200-rmb2000 and the show is here for another week or two (or longer, can't quite remember).
there is a website, something like mama-mia.com.cn or some other similar combination... i've seen the details in loads of taxis so it shouldn't be too difficult to find. well worth it!!!!!
sorry i can't be more specific, but you should be able to find exact details in the back of a da zhong or in one of the expat mags.
have a blast!!!!! |
