LittleBigPlanet is fun... so is Rock Band 2. As long as you have a couple of people with you anyway.

Need some help setting up PS3 as media server or PC whatever works. Downloaded some TVtome something program and added all the folders i wanted to share but ps3 still not finding any shared media or server.

Also not happy that i thought updating was a good idea - cannot play those avchd movies now - probably no chance of reversing the process is there?

where do you buy most of your english games? any other good big stores besides the one Beijing/Jiaozhu?

Oh and want MSG4 and the new NFS what is a good price for those?

Was checking around for a HK PS3 and found some conflicting info from sellers and forums. Can someone clarify as to what the PS3 can and cannot do?

-Play BluRay (Original and copy)
-Play DVD (Original and copy, regardless of region)
-Play VCD (Original and copy)
-Play AVCHD (Video file: Yes; on DVDRom: No)

Do the latest PS3 have 2.5 firmware already pre-installed which means I cannot play AVCHD becuase they are on DVDRoms? Does that mean I would have to copy the video files to PS3 hard drive in order to play it? Or the PS3 just can't read it at all?

Can the PS3 play any other video format files? Such as MP4, WMV, MPG, Divx, Mkv, Rm, etc?

Cannot play PS1/PS2 games?

I know the PS3 cannot play backups but why are there PS3 Iso available to download on torrent sites?

-Play BluRay (Original and copy)
Yes and No. It can Play Blu-Ray movies coded in Region A and the ones who doesn't have any coding at all. Check this list to see the region coding for a specific BR-movie; Region Coding List
You can play a AVCHD DVD-ROM disc (like the ones sold here in SH) yes as long as the PS3 is not upgraded with firmware2.5 If it is, you can only play AVCHD DVD-R disc. These are not sold here in the stores in SH, but these are the ones you make your self (backups one could call them)

-Play DVD (Original and copy, regardless of region)
Yes and No. You can play copies bought here in SH, and on a HK PS3 you can play region 3 DVD's. You can NOT play any other region coded DVD's, like from example the US (reg.1) or the EU (reg.2)

-Play VCD (Original and copy)
I'm not 100% sure on this one, but as far as I know, no you can NOT play VCD movies on a PS3 (please somebody correct me if I'm wrong on this one!)

-Play AVCHD (Video file: Yes; on DVDRom: No)
DVD-Rom as long as the firmware is not 2.5; Yes
Video Files coded correctly to a format supported by PS3; Yes

Do the latest PS3 have 2.5 firmware already pre-installed which means I cannot play AVCHD becuase they are on DVDRoms?
Not sure, but would be surprised if the ones they sell here already have the 2.5 firmware installed. Let them show you this on the player you're buying before you leave the store. And yes, if the PS3 do have the 2.5 firmware, you can NOT play AVCHD DVD-Roms bought here in SH.

Does that mean I would have to copy the video files to PS3 hard drive in order to play it? Yes

Or the PS3 just can't read it at all?
It can read it as long as you code the movie in a format supported by the PS3 and then copy it to the hard drive. But be careful. To transfer the files you will need a key card or an external hard drive. The PS3 can only read FAT formatted HD, and that means that the file can't be bigger then 4GB (biggest file supported by FAT). But there's a way around this. You can download a nice little program that lets you connect your computer with the PS3 using a network cable. Then when you have everything set up correclty, you can transfer bigger files then 4GB. Here's a link to the program I use (it works perfectly!); Media Center

Can the PS3 play any other video format files? Such as MP4, WMV, MPG, Divx, Mkv, Rm, etc?
Types of files that can be played (note; Firmware 2.5)

Cannot play PS1/PS2 games?
It can actually, but only if you have the luck of finding one of the old machines (the first ones that came out). But since you're buying it new, the answer is; the PS3 can NOT play any PS1 or PS2 games

I know the PS3 cannot play backups but why are there PS3 Iso available to download on torrent sites?
I don't know what you mean by this. The PS3 CAN play backups. DVD-Rom as long as you don't have the 2.5 firmware. DVD-R still works with this firmware as well (I haven't tried the DVD-R myself on a machine with 2.5 installed. But I haven't heard any other news saying that it shouldn't work)

Are the DVDs sold in Carrefour, Walmart, etc, (not small shops) region free or region 6 (China)?

Sorry, I wasn't clear here. Embarassed What I meant was that from what I understand, the PS3 can NOT play PS3 game backups, therefore cannot played copied PS3 games. But, I would like to know why I see PS3 games available to download on torrent websites. Are they for people who are trying to hack the PS3 so it can play game backups? Or people burning them onto BluRay discs?

Thanks for all your help! Smile

Good question. Personally I have no idea since I haven't bought any DVD's at those locations. All DVD's I bought here in China have been region free - naturally Wink

Don't know really, but there is no known way of playing .ISO files on the PS3 at the moment. Perhaps the ones using these files are doing something with a LINUX system or something. But to get it to play on a PS3 today will be very very difficult.

Thanks for all your help! Smile

No problem! Very Happy

If you can't find it here in SH, you could always try Play-Asia.com

But if you do find it, please let us know, because I really want to find this game as well!

If i were to exchange my hard drive for a bigger and faster one - having to reinstall an new clean system OS on it - would this make it possible to again start off with a 2.4 firmware version???

And still not clear why my PS3 is not sharing files - i do have another network media player ala popcorn hour and that works fine what could be wrong with PS3 not being on it - hardwired to router

Actually I did find it the other day in that small games mall on nan jing xi lu on the 2nd floor, but the bloke wanted 450 kuai, when most other places sell games for 360 kuai downwards, so i told him to bugger off cos he wouldnt give it to me for less. then i searched on taobao, where i have bought already at very good prices, but there is only one person selling moto gp and at around 500 kuai.............bugger.
I find play-asia prices expensive.....

For those with PS3's
You can rent games for 60rmb a month from this site -
http://www.yolax.com/
Works pretty well too.

450 deposit, can rent 2 games a month for 80rmb

They deliver to your door (and collect).

Not my site, not affiliated in any way, just a happy customer.

Trying to buy an English version of MGS4 here but at the gameshop on Beijing lu they only have a 500 rmb version which comes in larger box - claiming that after the holidays they will have a copied version selling for 320 rmb???

Anyone know anything about games being copied and if so isn't 320 way too expensive...you never know with the chinese they might somehow find a way how to reproduce an original game....

What's a good price for MGS4 and where can i buy one now for the holidays?

There are 2 or 3 versions of MGS4.

Asian (HK)
Asian with Extra's (2 disk version)
American.

The Asian (HK) one is usually cheaper.

No pirate games yet for BluRay.

MGS4 around 300-500RMB depending on version

eg - http://item.taobao.com/auction/item_detail-0db2-cf95f3e76634da0b7c6be1 507006e3bb.jhtml?pm1=1

http://item.taobao.com/auction/item_detail-0db1-04c444d1bbd301a474243e 2e4775a2bf.jhtml

Check Taobao, then call the phone number in the ad. They'll usually deliver for free or +10rmbish.

I just got Fallout 3 today on Loan from our usual game place Smile
