I don't subscribe to a plan but picked a number from a pile of cards off the streetside shop... Then I get a 100yuan recharge card when my balance goes low... sometimes I buy an online recharge card off taobao n get a few yuan off...
I did go to China Mobile and registered my number under my ID... so if I lose it I can keep the number w/ a new SIM card...
Probably not the cheap way to do it, but flexible... |

i use china mobile "quan qiu tong (GoTone) standard". rates are:
50 rmb per month, plus:
- shang hai local calls - 0.40rbm/min
- China long dist. - 0.40rbm/min + 0.07/every 6 seconds
- HK and Maccau - 0.40rbm/min + 0.20/every 6 seconds
- international - 0.40rbm/min + 0.80/every 6 seconds
- receiving call is 0.40rbm/min
when you are in roaming:
- shang hai local calls - 0.60rbm/min
- China long dist. - 0.60rbm/min + 0.07/every 6 seconds
- HK and Maccau - 0.60rbm/min + 0.20/every 6 seconds
- international - 0.60rbm/min + 0.80/every 6 seconds
- receiving call is 0.60rbm/min + 0.07/every 6 seconds
additional 10 rmb needed if you want to have an incomming #detector.

i just have a card...than u can call and make some additional service..like they take only 6rmb at the beggining of months for incoming calls from Foreign country...etc..so it is cheap  |
