Post subject: why the innacurate weather forecasts?

I get my weather info from two places - the Weather Underground site that links to this web site (see the two little rainbow-cloud icons in the upper right hand corner of the screen?) and the Shanghai Daily web site. On Saturday the Weather Underground site said 100% chance of rain for Sunday, so of course it did not rain. Maybe it rained somewhere in Shanghai yesterday, but it was partly cloudy all day where I live. The forecast for tomorrow is 30% chance of rain, but the Shanghai Daily site says 80% chance.

Anybody know why the forecast is wrong so often? I am not blaming China or anything Chinese for this, I know these models are usually computer generated. Is there some meteorological reason it is so difficult to get an accurate forecast for this particular spot on the globe?

(as a side note, where I lived in Texas had three, yes THREE 24 hour weather channels, showing doppler radar info for the state, the country, etc. That was a bit too much weather info I admit, but at least you could tell if your plans for a picnic were going to happen or not!)

i am a closet weather junkie... can watch the weather channel for hours on end...

forcasting in shanghai always struck me as a bit off... eventually, i stopped listening, reading, or surfing for it... just not worth it in the end.

Actually the weather forecasts in China are quite accurate. Ok, there is the occasional miss, but all in all they are quite reliable.

Hawaii. 95% of the time the forecast reads like this.

'Northerly trade winds 10 - 15 knots, showers windward and mauka (up-mountain). Wink And that's what you get. Every day.

Singapore- Today's weather sunny in the morning with temperatures between 27-33, and increasing clouds in the afternoon with chance of showers on part os the island.

That probably covers 300 days a year. Wink

That's right. Which also explains why the Romans didn't stay that long. Wink

On a interesting note....

There is a rumor that in ChongQing, the official weather forecasts on TV never exceeds 40C even when it is obviously over 40C. When it is over 40C there is a law that says something like employees are to have the day off or have a shorter work day...something like that.

probably fairly accurate. you could leave puxi in totally dry weather and get the dapu lu tunnel to pudong where it was pouring with rain. sea then reclaimed land, then river, then land again combined with polution in the air makes for difficult forecasting.

That's not a rumour, and it's not only in ChongQing, but in all major cities. First place I noticed it, and where it was explained to me was Beijing in the mid '90s.

Better to poke your head out of window and do your own forecast while in SH. In Melb, there's always umbrella, jacket and light jumper in the car to cover need for the day.

Agreed to Ed, only Spore has pretty much the same weather everyday all the time

The ones they have on CCTV actually. They are better than most web based ones I have seen.
