Post subject: Diving in the Philippines

We are thinking of going to the Philippines for October holidays to scuba dive. Are there any divers out there who can recommend a spot for great scuba but also with comfortable resorts around? An interesting nightlife / local markets etc would also be nice but not essential. TIA...

There are a lot of great dive spots in the Philippines, it really depends where or which province you will go to. Near the capital region is a city called "Batangas" which offers a lot of dive spots, including equipment rental. Another place you might want to try is the island off the west coast of Manila called "Palawan". The coral reefs in this area is spectacular and full of aquatic inhabitants - including sharks (not the great white though). There are also great spots in the province of Cebu, and Aklan (Boracay) where you can find local markets and interesting nightlife. You may want to check this link to find out more : www.lakbaypilipinas.com

See you there and Mabuhay!!!

Check out Philippine Air lines website.
They offer diving packages to some diving spots.\
Puerto Galera is highly recommended for diving.

I recommend Palawan and Puerto Galera in Mindoro.

Anilao..Batangas is a good spot. Try Montemar Beach Resort. The great thing about Batangas is its only around 70 to 80kms south of metro Manila. You can get there by land travel sans saving you time and energy from transferring from land travel to sea travel. Mr. Green

I planned a trip there but never made it. In my research, I really like the Puerto Galera area and found the Atlantis Resorts attractive. This resort chain actually has another facility on a different island. If your time allows, you can do island hopping with the resorts as well. They are on Skype and quite friendly to talk with. This is someone I worked with briefly:

Have fun - cheers and bubbles..........

hi barker!
nice to see your interest in diving!

well i'm not a diver (am afraid of the water) but my bf is a cmas divemaster and avid boatsman so i got to learn a lot from him

as a general rule, if you like to see micro stuff, sandy beaches + settlers + people does not make for the best diving - fish often like to live undisturbed in rocky and unpolluted areas

in the philippines the best is apo or tubbataha - both are remote and it will take a few transfers by plane, boat, jeep to go there - both are protected reserves so take care to respect the marine environment so more people can enjoy it - tubbataha has a short window of time for diving in apr to may if i remember correctly so plan well ahead in advance

batangas will be nice too and more accesible, palawan is great too for wrecks and general peace and beauty and tranquility, i loved the diver's village in coron where it's not too overpriced and without the inconveniences of city life - red light districts pollution robbers etcetc here and there and the people are nice and genuine - cebu or boracay i'm less enthusiastic, north of cebu they have a lot of german divers so it could be more interesting

just remember the rule (sand + people)

all the best!

Is there a place in Shanghai to get PADI certified with English speaking instructors? Took an introductory dive while in Cairns, Australia and it was beautiful being underwater at Down Under. Just didn't have time to do a full certification while I was there.

There is a diving club operated through Shanghaiexpat. If you run a search you should find the links and I believe they meet quite regularly in Shanghai. The guy who set it up has dived in the Philippines and will happily provide you with the information you seek.

puerto galera is one of the diving haven in the philippines, its around 3 hours away from manila by bus or car, and an hour boat ride, alot of nightlife and resosts that specializes in diving to choose from. but i recomend fishermen's cove, here's their website. http://www.fishermenscove.com/English/resort/detailbig.htm the owner is italian, been living and diving there for more than 10 years. if you have a problem going there he'll get someone to pick you up at your hotel by a private car then bring you to the port where you'll get a boat ride, private pick up costs around 2500 pesos(for the ride not per person), boat ride costs around 200 pesos per person. the resort is a nice place with huts filipino style but with air conditioning system, hot water, etc. there's a recreational area free of use, gym, billiards, internet(but not in the room) usually the day there starts with everyone (those who want to come, of course) diving, snorkelling in at least 2 areas then a nice lunch on the boat with fresh grilled seafood, salad, etc. (by the way the grilled squid is a must try, very good) then around 3 or 4 in the afternoon you'll be back at the resort for a massage, shopping at the village, or just relax at your hut, its up to you. they also do island hopping, hiking, kayaking, etc. somewhere you can rent some motor bikes, off road bikes, atvs' and go around the island, there's alot to see just ask the owner. i'll try to find the calling card for you.

when i was still in the philippines we often go there at least once a week, i prefer this resort because its very laid back and you can really relax, get away from the city. im not a diver, i just snorkle (snorkel?) but i often see alot of divers there.

by the way, october is the right time to go there specially for diving or november, its not so hot and because rainy season has ended by that time.
