Post subject: The meaning of 'guang chang' ?

Seems like guangchang has many many meanings!

Gang hui guangchang ... (grand gateway) = mall
Renmin guangchang = square
it can also mean plaza, or apartment complex,

how come one word has so many meanings?

Well firstly, it's not one word it's two. And in many languages, the same word has multiple meanings. In English (and Chinese) the same written word can have different pronunciation as well. For example the word STABLE can mean firmly established or it can mean a place where horses are kept.

guang means wide open
chang can mean field of space of even factory

combined this PHRASE is used to describe "plazas" or "wide open spaces"

Malls, Squares, Complexes al like to use similar adjectives to describe them this the usage of this phrase and thus the variety of usages you have seen.
