Post subject: Best Hunan

In my opinion the best Hunan food in town is found at South Memory.

I have been numerous times and have never left disappointed. Fish head, chicken dry pot, pork and peppers, you name it the food is always spot on.

If you haven't been and like spicy food give it a shot, much better than Gu Yi or Di Shui Dong.

Where is South Memory? Di Shui Dong is one of our favourites due to the spicy ribs...I have heard there are better in town but, we still always end up there as its great for group meals

The South Memory on Weifang Lu is the only one I've been to.

I'd agree with Bryan79 - much better than the over-rated Di Shui Dong.

I must give Gu Yi a try. I haven't been there but have heard many good reviews.

Southern barbarian has re-opened up in Maoming Lu. Any reviews?
Used to be great food in their original location.

Food was still good when I went, service had fallen off markedly however and portions were much smaller. Could have to do with getting the kinks out, re-opening in all.

Guyi is over rated. Di Shui Dong is good. Never tried South Memory. Will find a chance to go try their food.

Gu yi is kinda so so to me, the amount of MSG they use in their cooking is very obvious so the credit goes to MSG... not that I say I dislike their food, if I must choose between Guyi (Hunan) or Shanghainese, I'll still go for Gu Yi...

I want to try di shui dong too, heard many people keep comparing these two places.

Lemonie, next time I am in town we should go with your bf... at least you can read and know what to order... Wink

He is not in town now. But I can take you to Di Shui Dong any time you want! When will you get your ass out of that small village? Cool

had dinner at South Memory@Tianyaoqiao Lu just now.

had radish skin, black fungus (appetizers), ribs, fishhead and corn with pine nuts.

Menu is non-Chinese friendly, with English and with pictures. Food is good.

however beg to differ. prefers DiShuiDong@Maoming Lu.

Had dinner at South Memory @ Tianyaoqiao yesterday. Service was hopeless - drinks (water and soft drinks) took over 20 mins to arrive. One of the dishes never showed up. The restaurant is in the 3rd floor of a shopping centre and more nicely appointed then DSD on Maoming so if you want a less hectic environment it's a better choice.

Had the ribs, chicken with shrimps, cuttle-fish, jian lan (don't know english word) and it was all good. Having said that I agree with loowk, somehow DSD on Maoming just tastes better. Maybe it's the extra MSG Wink

I was there on Saturday night. I made a telephone booking beforehand so we didn't have to wait. [I managed to do that even with my basic Chinese]. I decided to try this venue after reading a favourable review in a mag.

We had a couple of starters which arrived together. [Vegetable slices wrapped in pork and the vegetable noodles in chillied vinegar]. We also had the fish head, spicy ribs and a mixed vegetables with fungus. We happily ate these with a few cold beers. The service was fine. The air con could be improved though.

Overall, quite good. I will return to this place again.

Oh, by the way, total bill for two [and we over ordered] was 199rmb.
