I'm blonde. I am not sure I get it right: do i have to have a car or can I just carry it around in my bag? If so, what is the battery life? And where can I buy it?

I bought the 4V1 from Aliuska so I'll offer anyone considering buying one some independent advice.

First of all I have to say that Aliuska offered to meet me in person to present the unit and was very honest and forthcoming with any of its limitations - she really seemed to care that the customer would be happy with the unit. This boosted my confidence in the sales person and the unit enough to finally buy one. Of course it doesn't hurt that you would pay double in a shop...

Since then I have been very happy with its performance, it does everything I expected it to do. For all you blondes out there (frangipani's words not mine) it is very simple to use and the menu system has nice big intuitive buttons to follow. Spend 20 mins going through it when you first turn it on and you'll be fine.

You can use it in the car with or without the power adapter, or carry it in your bag / pocket when walking or on your bike. I don't know what the battery life is (which is a good sign its quite a long time) but imagine its a few hours.

The one problem I have found is that where I live in Kunshan it takes a few minutes to locate and connect to available satellites, but it seems to be quicker in shanghai. Anyway, if you know roughly where you are going, you can just head in that direction and once the GPS connects it will calculate your route on the fly (while you are moving).

Aliuska has graciously answered all of my questions since the purchase with patience. One of the reasons I am happy to make this post.

Edit: above I mentioned that the unit took a few minutes to connect to the satellites. Turns out there was something wrong with my unit and Aliuska graciously replaced the unit within a couple of days of me returning it to her. The new unit connects almost instantly... thank you Aliuska!

I bought the 4" a few months back and I am very satisfied with it. Aliuska was very helpful and even came to my office for a demonstration. I have recommended other friends to her and the feedback is always the same...great service and a good product.

Waiting in anticipation for a map update...

Same question as before: can i toggle between a map in pinyin and a map in chinese characters without loosing position, route and other things ? in other words: can i search my way on a pingyin map, switch over to hanzi and then show it to someone who even can't read pingyin ?
I'm afraid that i have to choose between pinyin/English and Chinese/hanzi at the start. And once choosen, there is no way to toggle....
Right ?

Another question: who is the provider of the map software ?
Are the maps the same as on a Garmin GPS system ?

Just to confirm, I can use this just typing in the address in pinyin??....cos I cannot do chinese characters. How far can this navigate...say I want to drive from Shanghai to surrounding areas like Hangzhou, Suzhou etc or even Beijing?? will this system provide the directions?

Foreverinchina,

The situation has changed a bit but still you can not toggle between maps without loosing your location on the map. Right now I have a GPS model which has English, Chinese, German, French, Italian and Spanish language options.

When you input the address in Pinyin and then change the language to Chinese you won’t loose your location because you are still using the same map. Once you change to Chinese language the menu and the voice commands will change too but the streets names will remain in Pinyin.
If you want to see the streets names in Chinese characters then you will need to select the Chinese map meaning that you will loose your current location on the map.
While using the Chinese map you can still be able to select other languages for menu and voice commands but the street names on the map will appear in Chinese characters.

Our map provider is Navteq and our maps are for sure not the same as the ones from Garmin.

I suggest if you have some time next week we can meet for you to finally see how the Invion GPS systems work.

Hi,

Thanks for your interest.

You can indeed type the address in Pinyin; no need to know Chinese characters. The map of china includes all cities with all inter connecting roads meaning that you can drive from one to another city without problem.

Could you please be more specific about your last question? I don’t understand what you mean with if this system will provide the directions?

You can also mail me at: Aliuska@9sino.com or Aliuska.snijders@gmail.com

That's indeed a huge step forward for GPS mankind. But not yet entirely what we are looking for. Maybe the next update ?

I'm interested in the Invion GPS... wondering for those of you that have purchased one these Invions, how comprehensive the maps are? also how about the sizes, I note that the few that have posted reviews have bought the ones with 4" screens, these big enough for use in a car, or on a bike?

anything else to be aware off?

I note the prices have reduced on the Eurpoean manufacturers website... Razz

Post subject: Aliuska the gps lady

Aliuska, was very helpful ,and explained everything to me about the gps. It works great ,but the map is a little old so in China they make a new road every day, so it doesn't find new roads, but she will have a new map in a few weeks. It also doesn't know small towns, but if you get to where you want to go first, you can save it to favoites, name it, and the gps will find it very well after that. all in all it's worth it! Kenny

Thanks for the review. Just wonder on another point, when you use the GPS and enter into an area that hasnt been mapped yet, like a small town, does the GPS keep a track on the map so that one can backtrack the same way? I and another guy are interested in exploring some mountainous areas which probably won't be on the maps, and it would be useful and maybe even critical that the GPS has the ability/function to track the directions taken so that we can navigate back the way we may have travelled.

thanks

Blackberry Pearl GPS, assorted gps programs, any will do. More are developing China/Shanghai/Beijing maps.

It gets the job done.

I use Route 66 on my e61i
Mapking also works well.

TomTom doesn't have Chinese maps (yet).

You don't need a provider - you need a GPS and a phone and software.
Features depend on the sofware. Route 66 is decent enough, although the directions can be dumb on occasion.
GPS software is generally good for general direction/location, not specific directions from a->exactly where b is (unless you are in a major city heading for a major road).

For Somewhere -> some other city or town, its fine.

Have they updated the maps for Invion yet? I'm thinking of getting a GPS for the car but wondering if I should just upgrade my PDA/Mobile Phone instead. Any suggestions?
