| Post subject: Need some help for new family! |
Hello!
I'm hoping for some help here--I've been reading this forum for a while now and found a lot of great information! Now I'm hoping for a little guidance, my husband is in negotiations for a transfer to Shanghai within his current company, this will be a promotion. The assignment will be about 3-5 years. He will accept a position as a Manager for an automotive company and will manage about 12-20 people. He will report to the Director of China and will be working a lot.
We are just LOST on what is an acceptable package for his position. What do we need? What should we consider in terms of cost of living? We have one little boy 4 1/2 who will need to attend school. Are there some things that some people who have accepted an ex-pat package found they needed and was not included in the package? We have some health issues to consider (son has bad asthma, I'm pre-diabetic and need access to workout facilities to help control my insulin with weight training and higher levels of cardio aside from walking).
Again, any help and guidance would be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you! |

See my post under the relocation and moving thread - someone has recently asked the same queston about moving their family. I'm surprised if your husband is managing an automotive company that they wouldn't be large enough to already have something pretty comprehensive in place...Everything you mentioned should be covered by the package, we are with an automotive company as well. Schooling is the big cost, as well as accommodation but there are a lot of other things that should be in there too. |

A few points i must make for your situation:
1) make sure you have education expenses covered, as private schooling here for expats is astronomical in cost. Make sure that is in your contract.
2) medical insurance covered with at least as much coverage as you do now with the added benefit of getting airlifted out for anything serious enough that cannot be dealt with satisfactorily here in Shanghai.
3) Repatriation is a must, your husband must be promised a position of equal copmpensation upon his return and return and relocation must be covered by the company.
4) if your home is staying empty at home, you should get housing covered here in Shanghai. Additional allowances are great as well.
5) hardship pay for you to deal with a new environment needs to be figured into the mix, maybe in the form of some extra time off for your husband so you guys can work thru this relocation together.
While we have not had ANY of those benefits and have not necessarily needed any of them, I think if a US company is sending you here, they should provide that minimally.
Good luck. |

Typical additional allowances:
Annual fly backs in business class
Cost of Living Adjustment (cereal is 56-65 rmb for the regular box, long distance is ridiculous)
If you already have a house, they should be paying for rent, utilities, etc.
Car and driver allowance (or provided for)
Moving allowance or if they will not do a huge (1/2 container of more) shipment, they should at least provide allowance for purchasing misc items to furnish your new home. Many places rent with furniture. Don't forget that you still have to buy things like mop, broom, clothes drying rack, flower vases, new cleaning supplies, possibly pots/pans, dishes, cups, coffee machine, blender, toaster ovens, etc. It will be more than you would have guessed! |

and have co. pay for storage for things you need to leave behind...an appliance allowance would be nice so you don't burn nor need to bring your 110v stuff and just buy 220v ones here. |
