Singapore Airlines and Dragon Air...no doubts about it. Food is awesome on both these airlines. |

My parents enjoyed their fly to US, using China Air (on business thou), the price was a bargain, the service was good and food was endless. I was not with them so cant comment on the airlines.
As per my own preference, it would be SQ all time. I always fly SQ, as sux as it could be still 3 times better than other airlines I ever travelled with. Emiratte, JAL and Korean Air apprently are good as well, unfortunately I have not travelled with them.
Thai and Cathay were good but not as flexible as SQ when it comes to over baggage issue, with SQ I travel economy, yet can carry up to 30-35kg |

minxy - learn to spell for starters. qantas is third on my list! secondly it is which airline i think is best out of shanghai, i have never flown Singapore, Virgin Atlantic or others out of shanghai. Why? because they take too long to get to Australia and have long lay overs. I flew Malaysian because they are cheap. I don't see any of these airlines flying direct to Melbourne. And last time i got a Qantas flight from Shanghai it was cheaper than Singapore, Virgin, Malaysian and Cathay, only China Eastern is cheaper and I have made that mistake before flying with them. Flying with CE is like being on a plane in 1988 before personal televisions and decent inflight music.
When flying elsewhere in the world Compare Qantas to United, Continental, BA, Lufthasana and i think they will still come out on top due to planes and service. The only other Airline that is better internationally is Air Canada and Emirates. |

I'm surprised that no one has said ANA, but then maybe destinations play into the factor. |

1) SQ if destination doesnt matter
2) Al Nippon Airways for my return flights home
3) Cathay despite a round about way of getting back via HK to SFO- great to my wife and kid |

From Melb, SQ often has a good bargain. You may want to check with the travel agents in China Town. I heard Qantas was cheap but for long distance flight, it's so much more convenient with SQ. First it has 3-5 flights out from SH almost daily and 3 times flights to Melb. If you could match the schedule alright, you wouldnt have long time for stop over and second b'coz of the food and inflight entertainment that are often unbeatable... and they mainly have good customer service.
Flying south I dont have much drama with SQ, it would be ridicilous like when I went all the way to Spore and then back to Bangkok for example. Even few hours stop over is not a problem 'coz I love to go out for dinner in Spore before catching my next flight out.
I dont work for SQ, just one of their satisfied customers. Even found the staffs here in SH give away excellent support. My bosses could be annoying sometimes, one of them in particular could change his flight every 5 minutes for more than 6 times in a day, and the staff there was trying to be helpful as much as they could.
...my personal experience. |

Based on my experience flying China Eastern from China to Thailand, I'll never fly them again for international flights. |

Air China does fly from Shanghai to the US and it's pretty good. It's also the last living remnant of PanAmerican, if history and nostalgia floats your boat. |

1. Singapore Airlines - always faultless. I'm an Krisflyer gold member and often fly either business or economy. Once in economy they gave us a bottle of wine because the special meal my wife ordered was wrong (she only ordered one for the fun of it).
2. Dragon Air
3. All Nippon Airways
Lufthansa are crap, hostesses can be rude and keep speaking to me in German despite having served me more than once, both on business and economy classes
Qantas seemed to run out of food and staff take,;then forget your order. Flew business class. |

I heard that ANA (All Nippon Airways) will merge with Irish airline Aer Lingus. The new airline will be known as ANALingus. |

Malaysia Airlines (but only for the stretch Shanghai-KL and not the flight return)
otherwise: Singaporean Airlines and Cathay Pacific (do we really need a vote on this?)
Domestic: they are all the same |
