| Post subject: China Airlines at it again |

The China Airlines jet, which had flown to the island of Okinawa from Taiwan, exploded into flames after skidding on the tarmac on its way to the terminal gate.
Flames shoot up from the China Airlines jet in Japan
The passengers escaped just before the plane exploded
All 157 passengers - including two small children - had fled the Boeing 737-800 unhurt on inflated emergency slides just minutes earlier.
"When we looked out the window, everything was covered with fire," a passenger told reporters.
"It was just a few minutes after we got off that the fire swallowed the aircraft and we heard a blast."
Officials said three people were taken to hospital: a 57-year-old man and seven-year-old girl who felt sick after the escape and a firefighter who suffered heat stroke. A flight attendant was also hurt but did not go to hospital.
"When the fire broke out there was a huge bang and passengers were still in the midst of evacuating," said Toshimasa Yamamoto, a witness at the airport.

"When the passengers appeared to be finishing the evacuation, the fire engulfed the entire plane. It really was a close call."
The pilots only realised something was wrong when air traffic controllers noticed fumes after the plane landed and advised evacuation, Japanese officials said.
Japan's transport ministry said the fire started in an engine on the left wing of the plane after an oil leak. It said there were no indications of a terrorist attack.
"Everything was normal, including take-off and landing, until the pilots were told the aeroplane was on fire," said Johnson Sun, a spokesman for China Airlines.
Firefighters doused the empty plane as flames and clouds of black smoke billowed from the fuselage. The fire was put out about an hour later, leaving the aircraft charred and mangled.

Firefighters battled for an hour before dousing the flames
Four officials from the Aircraft and Railway Accidents Investigation Commission were at the airport to investigate the incident, ministry officials said.
Taiwan's Civil Aeronautics Administration has ordered China Airlines and its subsidiary Mandarin Airlines to ground their 13 other Boeing 737-800s pending a thorough inspection.
The incident will likely rekindle memories in Japan of a major crash by a China Airlines plane in 1994. In that incident, 264 people were killed as the Airbus A300 nosedived on landing in the central Japanese city of Nagoya. |

That's ashame. I remember flying with them back in the late 70's and they were pretty good. Too many accidents in recent years. They didn't buy replacement parts from China for maintenance, did they? |

Is this the kind of world we live in now, where every disaster is followed with a nice little reminder of terrorism? I heard of this earlier today, and not once did I think terrorism. But thank God the Daily Telegraph reminded me that it's lurking behind every corner, and possibly even inside my beer bottle.
That's it. Game over. The terrorists have officially won the war. |

i didn't notice it before but if you see the other videos at the point the plane blows up the pilots jump out the pilots window. Talk about captain of the ship being last off! |

On the plus side, at least the Chinese passengers' hand luggage will be safe. They will have had it in their hands since 29,997 feet up |

I'd be pretty gutted about losing my collection of vintage Patek Phillipe watches, tailor made suits from Saville Row, crocodile skin shoes etc.
In fact my tears would flow onto the insurance form as I filled it out.... |

^ yer i sure you'd get about 2000USD maximum with most airlines - mind you this is a chinese airline so you probably get 10,000RMB maximum.
wonder what the maximum is on travel insurance for lost baggage?
suppose they always ask for receipts - which in china wouldn't be hard to (re)produce |

^And that is why I always carry a 100 gig back up drive in my hand lugguage as well as mirror copies of my hd on a back up drive in both Shanghai and the USA. I have smoked so many hds and mother boards I'm paranoid about backing up.
I just hope there were no pets in the cargo hold. |

Good deal. Since, you actually can't take anything when you evac a plane unless it is already on you. I got evaced about 2 years ago and someone just announced, YOU MUST DEPLANE IMMIDIATELY. DONT TAKE ANYTHING. And then all of the flight attendants just shouted, GO GO GO GO GO GO GO over and over again. And everyone went. People even left with out shoes, etc. A big mess... |

They're offering USD$100 and an apology as compensation. They are considering compensation for lost luggage and items. |

It's a Taiwanese airline. China Airlines in Taiwanese. Air China is Chinese.
China Airlines always seem to be crashing planes and stuff. The rumor goes that a lot of the pilots and ground staff are ex Taiwanese airforce and that this leads to a culture of risk raking, failure to question bad calls by senior staff and slapdash maintenance. Not sure how true that is, but the pics of burnt out aircraft suggest they are doing something wrong. |

You'd think the would have called themselves "Taiwan Airlines" if they wanted to make that distinction;) ... but yes, China Airlines is a Taiwan-based airline. they probably would compensate in NT$. |
