I gave GTA4 a half hour whirl last night, it does seem a tad ordinary so far but I think a lot of the new features are yet to be revealed, especially with the way everyone's raving on about it.

It could well be possible, you'd just have to know how to spot if it's been opened at all. If they do the modding locally (which I believe they do) it means there must be some non-modded ones lying around somewhere.

I think I agree with Lawrence. I am certain most xboxes are modded here. At least I don't know that many people who would spend more than 10 RMB on a game. If you want a unmodded one your best bet would probably be to get one in Hong Kong. Maybe play-asia ships here. Or try tabeo. I'll ask around with my buddies though

Do you know from which region your game is? I saw the GTA IV PAL and US version of the game was leaked on some torrent websites but when I got a copy at my local store it didn't work because the game was PAL and my 360 is from the US.

By the way since the vast majority of the 360s here are either from HK/Taiwan or Japan how can you guys play games other than the asian or region free ones? As far as I know the console, even if modded, is not region-free.

Right, I noticed the same. This is what I've figured out:

NTSC does not mean US and Japan as it did for instance in the PS2 days. NTSC with regard to GTA4 means US only. The PAL version will run on Japanese, HK, European, and Australian systems, and as such is the one sold in stores here.

Some games are region-free, there may be a way make a game region free but I don't think it's easy or I'd imagine it would be well known by now.

Easiest way to check is to download a program galled "Xdvd mulleter", put the disc your PC drive, and it will tell you what region it is.

@maestro2007 - You could ask for a non modded one.

I don't think you'll be playing much live online anyway, the speeds will suck from here.
The lastest drive firmwares are undetectable anyway for Live, so thats not a problem either.

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=513412

I'm sure you can also ask the store to put a specific firmware on the machine as well if you wanted. The people that actually do the firwmware stuff to the drives are usually into seeing what the latest stuff is, and are willing to put different stuff on if you know what you want.

So there is a way to change the drive's region? This region issue is killing me. For some games I had to order from play-asia.com since the version they had here was not compatible with my 360....

To change the drive's region? No, no current way, as far as I know. You're basically going to be limited to games that are US-NTSC compatible. There is also the option of downloading the games and burning, but from the little I know of it that seems like considerably more of a pain the ass than your average PS2/Wii home download/burn job.

I carried my 360 from HK and am enjoying Xbox Live in Shanghai just fine.

Halo plays nice but sometimes downloading 400mb+ game demos can take up to 24 hrs.

I don't play that much games since the top hits games keep me busy enough and the download demo or arcades are pennys, so I don't mind paying full price for games.

I don't trust any XBOX sold here in China. They are all over box and you can almost be certain they are open cased with the mother board swapped for reasons not in your favor.

It would be fine for the Wii or the PS3 which are bullet proof hardware wise. The 360 is nasty on versions of hardware and failures, a 360 with the case open is just too suspicious!

When I get a 360, I'm going to have 2 devices (360 and another a/v device) that use component video. Has anyone seen a component video (with audio) switch for sale in Shanghai? Anyone know what it's called and an approximate price? Thanks.

Can they really swap around Xbox hardware like that? I don't think they can. I think as long as you've done a bit of homework before buying you should be right. Regardless, it's always best to buy from a shop you can trust, as some sellers apparently do do things like swap PSP batteries and controllers around to save a few kuai here and there.

I have been using my Xbox 360 for 4 months now with no problems.

Just got GTA4 and it is a killer game.

Starts a little slow but has kept my interest for over 30 hours...

I brought my Xbox 360 from the States, and I haven't bothered hooking it up to Xbox Live since I got here 5 months ago. My Halo 3 profile is gathering virtual dust, and I'm on my third Mass Effect playthrough, lol.

I can't seem to find a legit version of GTA IV either when I went browsing around in XuJiaHui the other day. Where do you guys get your games? Pirated games need not apply; I don't want to mod my Xbox.

Play-asia.com is you friend.

I was lucky as my GF was in HK on launchday , so she brought me a copy.

Will be in HK in 2 weeks, and will stock up on some games again, if anybody needs something in original i can bring something over.

Alternatively I am willing to swap some games i played through.... at least when i stop playing GTA and COD 4 and find time to play something else Wink

WAH ! Yesterday the worst case scenario happened.

Watching film with Girlfriend on the couch, when the unbelievable happened:
She asked me if i Can play GTA... she wants to know what happened next.
That comes from a Girl who's only connection with gaming is laughing her ass off when i make a fool ( a rocking one that is!) when playing Guitar Hero.

Anyway.... after making sure that she didn't jsut ask me to play a game because she emptied my Credit Card with buying new shoes again, I popped in the Disc , throw down my Xbox and the drive scratch the CD nicely -_-

GAH!. I can't wait another 2 weeks . If someone has an original GTA4 PAL or NTSC-J and is through with the game please contact me ... already tried to compensate the lack of playing with punching the taxi driver this morning and dragging him out of his car just to drive around and kill some pedestrians.

Someone give me the game , for a safer Shanghai's sake.

Look on the net on different ways of repairing the 3 rings of death and you'll realize they are not far away from able to extract mother boards. And if its possible, I see some merchants in China doing it. Perhaps selling you a xbox that was repaired from 3 rings by using a newer case so it looks new.

Look I don't want to start mass hysteria but its just something I wouldn't put it beyond people here.

3rd play through!?? I'm on my 1st but I try to do all the side quest and up to 40+ hours already. I personally feel the game is good but VERY overrated by the press. People say its the next evolution in RGP... its innovated in some ways, but I had more fun with Kingdom Hearts 1!

Is the game different enough on each play thought using different careers?

Not really, though you can open up different story lines depending on whether or not you choose paragon or rebel. If you stick to the rebel path then it gets a bit harder since none of the good guys will help you and basically have to do everything by force or on the dodgy.
The actual careers only make it easier or harder in some cases but I found that it was just easier to stick with soldier and find other guys who can do other stuff. The abilty to open stuff for example is a waste. you always find stuff lying around that is good enough anyways and I destroyed most of the crap I found in locked boxes.

I agree, it was definitely overrated by the media but still a great game.
