depends where they are from.

i first came in china going from shanghai to beijing different language.

i then go to my wife town in jiangsu province stay there 3 years own a business learn a few things........... go back shanghai can not anderstand anything ...... different language again i had to learn a few things again.

now for the last 8 months i live in jinan shandong province .................... again i anderstood nothing when i got there different language again.

if i learn some local language when i go back shanghai i will anderstand nothing again.

i learn english and spanish living and working with locals it is the same thing but not as different as in china. they really have different languages.

for chinese people i am sure they can adapt easy because they all speak mandarin.

ok you will tell me some states in america and some areas in england and i am sure in other countries have there own language but i am sure not as much as in china where it looks like every town has his own language wich for western people are totally different form each other.

for foreigners it is very hard because we have no clue how it works and can not even read it.

my wife is chinese but can not speak cantonese.

learn mandarin yes may be the best way to learn but people have to make sure they are not teaching you a local language or slang. in thins case it is not worth it i think.
