since they do not have all the same size and they do not offer always the same products (some you find in one carrefour and not in another one) it would be hard to know ev[list]n guessing someone would have to stay in all the store for a long time just to try to find out something and i do not think this is our priority sorry

I do not see the relevance of the question with my daily living in Shanghai but I would bet that CarreFour Gubei New Area grosses the most annually. This is basing from its size compared to the other branches.

they should certainly open up more Carrefours in Shanghai, I think I will write a "petition" to the CEO and suggest it to him through my blog.

they should shut all the carrefoure's in shanghai and replace them with a Sainsbury's store, then you will see superior products quality and service!!!

Won't sign. They need more competition.

Gubei probably grosses the most as it seem to be the 'expat' store as they carry the most foreign lines. I use that and the one closest to me on Lian Huan Lu. That store is OK but it's wine and booze section is pretty poor as is the import section for foods.

China figures given as a whole in this article:

Retail staff caught in swoop on bribery

By Jin Jing 2007-8-27

EIGHT high-level employees from Carrefour SA in Beijing have been detained by local police for allegedly taking bribes from suppliers.

The apprehensions are the result of an internal graft crackdown by the world's second largest retailer.

Corruption has been one of the biggest problems for foreign companies operating on the Chinese mainland.

Siemens AG said last week that it had fired 20 staffers in China last year for bribery-related offenses.

Paris-based Carrefour made the announcement of the arrest of its eight management-level employees in internal documents early this month, company officials said in Shanghai yesterday.

Carrefour called in the police to investigate 22 people, including 12 suppliers, from June 25 to August 1, according to China Business Journal.

The eight arrested employees are heads in the meat-procurement departments in seven stores in Beijing and an official with its Beijing City Commission Unit, a city-based purchasing and operating department.

Besides the arrests in Beijing, Carrefour is also undertaking corruption inquiries in the northeast region of China and Shenzhen in southern China's Guangdong Province, according to Beijing Youth Daily.

Pei Liang, secretary general of the China Chain Store & Franchise Association, told Shanghai Daily yesterday that corruption problems can be solved by streamlining and centralizing purchasing practices.

Carrefour is certainly following this line of thinking. This year the company has set up city commission units in four areas to replace local stores with the responsibility of purchasing, pricing and promotion negotiations with suppliers.

Carrefour boosted its China sales 53 percent to 24.8 billion yuan (US$3.3 billion) for last year.

Purchasing scandals are not confined to the Chinese mainland. Five employees of the Inner Mongolia Little Sheep Catering Chain Co Ltd have been detained for allegedly taking bribes from suppliers in Hong Kong.

this is not only in china.

in the united state i had a business in the 90' and i was a manager in a business in the 80' also in the states.
most purveyors used to give you a bonus for the holiday seasons kind of thank you for choosing us for your bla bla bla................

this is just a small business just a friendly thing but on a small level.

from what i heard since i am in china in most businesses here purveyors pay the businesses to get in and sell their stuffs instead of the other guys this is nothing new. (form of bribery....... you buy from me and i give you this and that)

i can tell you at least 2 or 3 businesses i know in shanghai that used to do this (getting "tips" from purveyors to buy from them) at least they used to do it a couple of years ago.

in this case there is no more competition between the purveyors trying to give the best price ..... when they get in they can almost charge what they want (beiing resonable anyway) if not the company brake the contract. (then who is going to complain?)

of course it is not for everything but almost ........... if you are looking for something that only 1 or 2 companies sell they do not really need to do that because if you want it you have to go through them but so many companies sell the same thing to get in somewhere and get good business they have to give what we can call "insentives."

nothing new to this fact happens everywhere. depends on what level

According to something I read.. either Lonely Planet or one of those free magazines or something, Gubei Carrefour is the only foreign supermarket to actually make a profit! ???

Yorkshire King - they do it to get a foothold on the lucrative China market. Product range is dictated by the customers so the ranges are selected according to the local population's tastes and cultures which is why Carrefour sell things like live turtles for example. Even within the same city you will see that different branches have different ranges and the Gubei branch is far more "western" in its product assortment. Having said that, Tesco / Hymall does have a small selection of their own label products which is better than nothing but yes, would be nice to have more.

exactly why i was saying that it is hard to know witch branch of any supermarket make the most money because they all have different sizes and do n ot appeal to the same clientele so some have more expensive items than others
very hard to know that way

Tesco in Beijing carries mostly local products with ONE shelf of Tesco brand & international brand stuff - its nothing compared to Carrefour Gubei! And most of their customers are local Chinese as they are located in a very very local area. Many of their signs also have wrong grammar and incorrect spelling - YES in a Tesco, unbelievable. My guests from the UK had a shock of their lives when they visited Tesco in Beijing.

Before Carrefour prides itself in being able to guarantee they are the cheapest and will refund the difference if you can prove they are more expensive than a store a few blocks around.

Now I notice TESCO/Hymart is matching Carrefours prices and even cheaper by a few mao in some items.
