since when are we suppose to have the world's medical database on our desk? Hands' figure was meant as a statement of strength, not strictly quantitative. iow, it's interpretation is not "to 2 sig. figs of precision," or some crap like that. it's meant to convey the message: the overwhelming remedies of TCM are based on voodoo. read in btwn the lines.

let me put it this way: if the bookie set the line at 80%, how would u bet?

i'll tell u how i'd bet: i'd POUND the OVER like a muthafucker. and twice on sunday.

recent reports indicate that over 20% of TCM meds contain actual chemicals that have been show to have effects and side effects)....

well, seeing how there are 50 bagillion TCM concoctions that exist, and each one has probably at least a half dozen chemicals, i'm not surprised the reports say what they do. u know, give a bagillion monkeys a bagillion yrs, pounding away on typewriters...

I think it will be a long time before we get enough evidence to even begin to truly assertain the degree of legitimacy of TCM in any statistical manner.

u can certainly elect to play a wait and see approach. as for me, i'm still pounding the over. now all i gotta do is find a bookie who'll take my action.

Acupuncture worked wonders on me, so I definitely believe in it. I had severe sinusitis for a few years and nothing helped, neither in the states or in Sweden. (but in all fairness I should add that I refused one treatment offered in western medicine; cracking open my sinuses)

My mom found an amazing doctor of acupuncture here in Stockholm who treated me for a prolonged period and my (at that point chronic) sinusitis finally gave in. Also; whenever I went in for my treatment she would ask if I was feeling healthy and good, if I wasn't she would treat whatever other symptom I had (like the flu, stomachaches etc.) as well and I was never disappointed.

So, in conclusion, I totally believe in acupuncture, and I'm forever grateful towards my doctor. Wink

TCM DOES WORK FOR ECZEMA.

I tried Western medicine for years and all it did was make the condition worse. I went to a Chinese doctor last month when I was on a tourist visa, took some prescribed herbs and the condition has healed 70-80% probably would have been 100% if I had been able to complete the one month course.

All the Western doctors ever did was prescribe steroid cream which actually thins the skin.

There are things that TCM is really good for and there are things Western medicine is good for.

I think most of it is crap, with the possible exception of acupuncture, which even a lot of westerners swear by (and is usually the first thing TCM advocates bring up). I'd agree with Andreas in that it's just a bit of a racket, I'd take western medicine over TCM any day of the week.

CTM is far better than you western medicines, cause CTM it has no side effect when you take it, but all you western medicines it always has some heavy and dangerous side effects to suffer when people take it, so I don't like western medicines, cause it can cure your pains or scars very fast, but it never can heal the scars or whatever completely or entirely in life!!!!!

i want to share this.... you decide.

this happened 4 years ago. for a couple of months, i was feeling tired, all the time. i had a nice cushy job, not stressful, friends, partying etc. life was good.

yet i was tired.

i went for medical tests - all sorts but to no avail on source of problem. i was admitted to A & E couple of times at night as i felt i was about to collapse from the giddiness..

this went on for few months until the doctor at the hospital suggested i go see a psychiatrist. i didnt - i didn't think i was sick in that department..

one afternoon, i was hanging out with a friend who suggsted going for a foot massage. i thought it would be fun since i didnt try it... the masseuse told me that i was 'heaty' - some sort of imbalance in energy.

that evening i went home and had some herbal tea; brought from some store. i had another the next day. it costs 50rmb for both treatments.

my tiredness was gone for good.

and i became a believer in tcm thereafter.

Agree with CHinafever on this one: "There are things that TCM is really good for and there are things Western medicine is good for."
When Roger Federer was in Shanghai for the Masters Cup one year, he asked for acupuncture to sooth his pain (in feet or legs I don't remember). The next year when he was here again (he's good uh?) he appointed for the same acupuncturer.
My belief is: Western medicine is quick and based on data; TCM takes longer time (therefore not good for emergencies) and based on experience (which has a higher requirement on the doctors.)

placebo
A substance containing no medication and prescribed to reinforce a patient's expectation of getting well or used as a control in a clinical research trial to determine the effectiveness of a potential new drug.

Some people have been cured by it, only because they believe it will cure them Smile I have no idea if TCM is a legit form of treatment. I do know that aspirin helps cure a hangover though (at least for me!) Haha
