Post subject: Urumqi trip, anyone been? Car hire prices

We're planning a trip to Urumqi during the october holiday and are looking for some contacts or tips for a hire car. We've got a quote for about 1100rmb/day for a land cruiser toyota, there will be four of us going. Anyone have experience with this price? Seems outrageous to me.

I would personally rather grab a good map and rent a car myself and drive. (Know where to rent a car in Urumqi? I doubt AVIS is there Smile ).

Never hired a car, been to Urumqi a couple of times. Both times in July (-25 celsius!!). I like the place.

For car hire, make sure you have the right Chinese licence. They are cracking down up there.

Chingus on this website lives there, and owns the only expat bar up there called Fubar. I can put you in contact with him if you like. Nice bloke, even though he is Kiwi, and the bar is cool. He can point you in the right directions for accomodation, hire etc.... PM me if you want more details.

Mat,

Thanks, I sent PM.

Also for those others headed to Urumqi we found this site to rent a car, prices seem reasonable (700- 800 rmb or so)

My husband and I will also be there and looking for accomodation and car. We are thinking about just bringing a tent and doing some camping but imagine it might be pretty cold....any insight to this crazy notion or tips is greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

Mat - I will also PM you for the contact info.
