A few new things I thought I should put here before I forgot.
---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------
I finished the job with almost no difficulty.
I finished the job almost with no difficulty.
Which one is correct?
---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----
"English speaking society" or "English spoken society"?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
respectful = full of respect
respectable = can be respected
But why knowledgeable/knowledgable = full of knowledge?
---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----
why can't I do something(it)?
why can I not do something(it)?
What's the difference?
-----------------------------------------------
What's is the trick to pronounce "th" after "s", really, such as "months"?
And "s" after "th", such as "sixth"?
I just don't get it.
How can you control your tongue in these cases?
I just can't utter them.
---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------
Hello.
Anybody here?
Help a buddy out. |

Must have missed that last time I read Shakespeare, Shaw, or Keayts.
People who are unable to articulate their emotions because a lack of mastery of the language are the first to use vulgarisms....

There dwelt a bear, also a boar,
The bear could not bear the boar,
The bear thought the boar was a bore.

And so one morn he bored the boar-
That boar will bore no more! |

OMG, has Reg written an English grammar book? I am surprised the spelling is American though
SPP, you are taking the p1ss - this is getting ridiculous. My suggestion - follow LVS' advice and get yourself a bloody teacher. If you look like your avatar, I am sure there will be plenty of 'language exchange' volunteers.
Good luck! |

Not every person is a language guru, you know. Ordinary people like ordinary ways to express themselves. No everyone has the oppotunity to be educated as an elite!!!
You people help or zip!
This section is called "learning language", isn't it?
If you are not here to help or ask for help, what are y'all doing here for??? |

But it is also a free forum, and like you said people can help or not.
What about politics? Many Chinese are motivated to learn English because it means they can earn more money at their job if they can pass the standard tests. Most laowai don't earn more money if they speak Chinese.
Other Chinese looking to lean English post topics about language exchange - a 2-way deal. Maybe you could offer to help people with their Chinese, at least say thank-you sometimes, but maybe it is to late to try that part.
Most laowai get ripped off for their apartments, their satellite TV, sometimes in a taxi, always at the fake mall, sometimes in the real malls, for many things. You have to consider their point of view - you are DEMANDING free English lessons which only benefit you, and you are not nice about it.
Example
- you SHALL help me with English because this is the learning language thread
- SHOULD anyone be willing to help me with difficult English questions, I would be thankful and happy to help them with learning Mandarin.
-Eat my shorts, I'm SPP and you owe me anything I want.
Which one is correct? |

Thank you, Coffee. Very well said.
SPP, the other thing you should know is "it's not what you say, it's how you say it". Unlike Chinese, English is a very polite language, we understand you are not a native speaker and it's hard for you to express yourself correctly, but could you please make at least a bit of an effort? Also, there is SOOO much free information on the Internet (am I right in thinking that you are not a Swedish model and know how to use Google? , various English grammar and punctuation websites, and there are heaps of good books with answers and explanations at the back. There is absolutely no problem with asking a few questions here and there but in your case it's getting out of hand. A lot of people have been very generous with their time, you need to learn to appreciate it and not take advantage of people. And this is probably not the best place to say things like "English sucks" or "You help people or zip!". Here is a news flash for you - the world doesn't revolve around you and your learning English difficulties. I am sorry if I am too direct, but you've asked for it.
Reg gives a lot of things for free, but it ain't books |

I don't quite understand, Bro CoffeeHawk_0.
When you help somebody, help somebody without demanding a return or whatsoever.
Maybe I am a little innocent or naive here to ask help in this forum.
If my English questions bother you, I'm sorry.
The example you post seem all right to me.
Oh. Everything here is about money, money and money.
I'm living in the darkness, so cold so cold. |

------------------------------------------------------------------
For me, it's a good treat.
To me, it's a good treat.
Which one?
-------------------------------------------
It's nice to go shopping today. = To go shopping today is nice.
Then how do we analyse/analyze the sentence below?
He is a good husband(nice) to share some housework with his wife. |

Hypocritical i will say, angelgirl.
I am only asking specific questions. Yes or no, maybe a simple reason also prefered.
If you have you precious time with your mumbo-jumbo nonsense, help a brother out.
Me have no time to search internet all day to find a general answer, many of these I asked not being questions of general nature anyway. Yes or no is enough. If you are kind enough to add some reasons to enlighten me, welcome I will say.
I am asking questions about English as a language not your perceptions of your worlds after all.
The world sucks because so many of you help only in the condition of getting a return, if you would ask my perspective in this matter.
It is not that a language is polite and a language is not. It's how you use it. |

Bro? Ya'll? Brother? You a G or what?
Specific questions? Yes or no as answer? You counter answers with questions, making it a discussion.
The world sucks because people only want to receive, and refuse to give, think about that gangstah aspeepee.

See! This is your perspective and I don't ask for it. What do you expect from me for doing me a small favor/favour? Yes. I am asking. What do you expect from a hungry child? Does he then have to offer himself/herself? You pervert.

Haven't I said/typed the word "many" or "most"? |

All I was trying to say with my "mumbo-jumbo nonsense" - you have to be nice if you want people to help you. Nobody wants anything from you, but it would be general courtesy to offer something in return, eg help with Mandarin.
LVS? A pervert??? That wasn't a very good idea, SPP, don't think you will be getting too much help now...
You need to looooosen up a tad... |

P.S. A hungry child who has a computer/access to Internet and speaks decent English? I don't think so. |

I don't understand why you backstabbed our friend.
Why did you do this?
Why would you do this?
Why would you have done this?
Are the three forms all right?
Which one is usually used?
---------------------------------------------------------------------- --
I feel so stupid. |

Which is correct?
1. SPP smokes crack
2. SPP smoked crack and then discovered the internet
3. SPP is a disgruntled English teacher named Pablo
4. SPP is FL
5. SPP is Fidel
6. SPP just told 2 native English speakers that he/she does not give a flying crap about the English language or the posters but demands help with grammar anyway. |

All three are OK grammatically. The first two elicit a response from the person you are speaking to. The third implies you as the speaker are going to suggest a reason why this person betrayed your friend. |

Thank you, nihaoshanghai. I like English teachers like you.
Spp thinks English is a damn awkward language but wants to know something about it anyway.
Spp doesn't give a damn about who answered or will answer spp's questions as long as he/she wasn't or isn't or won't be focking with spp and makes spp, who is a retard, feel even more stupid. |

A: My name is Ann (my English name). I graduated from ** University. My major was English Literature so I can speek English fluently. I can accompany and help while you are shopping, travelling and doing businesses in Shanghai. So email me if you want a guide in Shanghai.
I'm kind, westernized, sexy and openminded.
Me: Hello, Ann. I'm Spp. Nice to meet you. You said your major in college was English Literature so your English must be very good, much better than an ordinary citizen in an English speaking country at least. I have a question bothering me. *******************, which one is correct? Thank you.
A: Hello, Spp. Nice to meet you, too. I am vacant on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday afternoon. When shall we meet? Or you can give me your schedule and I will see what I can do.
Me: (What the fock are you talking about? Oh! I forgot I should be polite when asking a question.) Hello. Thank you for your reply, Ann. Err... I am very busy these days. Can you do me a favour and help me out now?
A: What favour? OMG! I forgot to tell you I have only a little experience. If you really like it, we can talk about later.
Me: (WHAT? I mean my god damn question! O.K. I should be polite if I want to get an answer, that's what everyone told me.) Hello, dear Ann. What I mean is my question. ***************, which one is correct? Please, help a brother out.
A: You mean you don't want a companion or someone who can help you with your Chinese?
Me: No, I don't want a companion and have no time no money to afford one. But I want your help with the question, and it will take only one minute or so.
A: ......................
Me: Hello, Ann. Are you still there?
A: .........................
Me: Ann?
A: Hey, you are wasting my time.
Me: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~(What the hell!)
---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------
B: Hello! My name is Ben. I'm from Canada. I am teaching English in Shanghai. I have been teaching English for 5 years, in Beijing, Tianjing, Hongkong and now Shanghai. If anyone wants private lessons, please email me. I can make your English learning more easy and joyful. I'm young, generous and friendly. I'm white.
Me: Hello, Ben. Nice to meet you. I'm Spp and there's a problem here so I want your help. **********************, which one is correct?
B: Hello. Good to meet you, too. Call me or my agent.
My number: *************
My agent's number: **************
Me: Thank you for your reply but I don't want a English course.
B: Then why did you contact me? You know you should take an English course if you want to learn it well.
My tutorial fee is: ***RMB/hour
It isn't very high, is it?
And I can assure you that you won't regret it.
Me: Hey, buddy. I have got only a question and I don't want to take a whole course. Come on buddy, give a dude a hand. You see, it must be quit easy for an English teacher and should only take you a few seconds, but to me it'll be a great help.
B: What do you think I am doing for a living then?
Me: You are a teacher, aren't you?
B: But it is not free.
Me: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~(so dark, so cold.) |
