Post subject: Myanamar

Is this being talked about else where on the forum? I couldn't find it here.

How do you think China will handle this in their media? It is being suggested they are using political force to hold back the junta so far. How will it look to the Chinese given rising food prices at the moment?

It is all very interesting to me.

myanmar or burma is looking very dicey at the moment as police move into rangoon.
bush now with sanctions and china apparently asking for restraint lets hope they heed the call and we don't end up with 1 9 8 9.

But is it an official prοtest?

Can't the monks just say 'hey look, we all just happen to be walking to the same place together'?

According to the BBC a new prοtest is under way after the first group were 'backed away' by the cops.

Mianmar has a lot of natural gas, HENCE the Brits see the chance of invading and stealing yet another country. Makes sense, and that has been their foreign policy for what, 150+ years? Not surprised at all.

Of course what's going on is wrong: you shouldnt repress peaceful demonstrations with violence, ever.

But Gordon Brown talking about impunity, human rights, illegal regime after what they are doing in Iraq? What a fkng joke.

Once you rape your morals, nobody believes you, and that's the exact case.

And they try to blame China saying "China wants their resources". And the brits dont eh? What a fkng joke. Like if the Americans didnt support a regime EXACTLY like the current one in Mianmar in Chile for the exact same reasons.

Let's hope this all comes to and end peacefully.

^Dream on, Total has been blamed for years of operations there so hopefully they'll manage to keep it for them...

The regime turned illegal overnight?

Yeah, and Gordon Brown is calling it Burma. Isnt the official name Myanmar? Bad diplomatic mistake.

This whole thing is about the West realizing that is losing its grip on a country full of resources.

If Myanmar didnt have resources, nobody, no BBC, not anyone would be losing sleep about it and would let the monks be butchered like cattle.

They werent subtle enough and let the "China has a lot of investment there" slip too early.

I don’t think you’re very familiar with BBC news to be honest. Banana republics get way more attention from the Beeb than anywhere else.

In that case it must be a “big diplomatic mistake” to call Eire 'Ireland' and Espana 'Spain'.

Let’s see how long hc can take participate in this thread before he falls back on the personal jibes. Let’s see…

That's why I asked "Isnt the official name Myanmar?"

In Portuguese the official name is Myanmar.

I should pretend I knew and google for it first instead like you right?

Anyway, this is what the Wikipedia says about it:

"Myanmar (pronounced /ˈmjɑnˌmɑː/[1]) which is also known as Burma and is officially the Union of Myanmar (Burmese: [pjìdàunzṵ mjəmà nàinŋàndɔ̀]), is the largest country by geographical area in mainland Southeast Asia. Myanmar achieved independence from the United Kingdom on 4 January 1948 as the “Union of Burma”. It became the “Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma” on 4 January 1974, before reverting to the “Union of Burma” on 23 September 1988. On 18 June 1989, the State Law and Order Restoration Council adopted the name “Union of Myanmar”. This was recognised by the United Nations, but not by the US or UK Governments[2]."

This basically means that only the US and the UK do not call it Myanmar.

So, not recognized by the US and UK, that's why they are so happy the current government might give an excuse for them to go there, bomb the shiat out of the country and then invade, steal the gas and do everything else we already know.

All in the name of peace of course, right wolfy?

In Germany the official name is also Burma, sometimes also spelled as Birma.

Funny. I think it's pretty smart that before saying anything yourself you google for it and avoid yourself from looking ignorant.

You took it as a jab?

Of course also means that as long as the net is down you are a straw toy without an opinion, but that's another discussion.

Anyway, let's see how long does it take for you to get back on topic, instead of trying to find a reason so that I can be medieval with your azz.

Oh I stand corrected then. I thought that the US and UK would stick to Burma because they didnt recognize the junta or something (meaning the junta does not let them exploit the country), and everyone else would call it by their latest name change.

good.

Actually I never realized that some countries were still calling it Burma, till I was reading an article about the recent developments in the German weekly 'Der Spiegel'.

I wonder which other countries call Myanmar Burma and why?

Besides the UK, US, Germany, wondering if anyone would know the official name of Myanmar in your respective countries?

History HC. History, habits and language.
There is no adjective based on 'myanmar' like 'burmese' for instance, is there?
