I like Ambassy Club on huaihai zhong lu. Upscale and gym is being expanded. Also fantastic outdoor pool w/ food/bar, among many others facilities. Not so cheap (9,000), but includes 1,000 F&B benefit.

There is a gym inside zhongshan park. It might be the cheapest option in the area. Walk in the main entrance and turn left. Its that building at the end. It is a little on the dirty side, machines are very old. I recommend bringing some hand sanitizer for when you are finished.

Post subject: Ambassy Club & Y+ yoga

Hi guys, if this can help, I am a member at Ambassy Club on huaihai zhong lu. Service is fine, never crowded, facilities are functional. They do yearly memberships only but it is worth it. Very Happy
As if this was not enough, I also took a membership at Y+ yoga center and that turned out to be a disaster: the most expensive yoga center in town where classes are fully booked 4 weeks in a row... Question Exclamation
Watch out before you spend a penny there... Confused

Can someone recommend some gyms for me to check out in the Jing'An area? I am very close to Fitness First but their prices may be more than I'm willing to pay (seems like it, but I haven't inquired yet). I just want to join one that is clean with decent machines and not packed all the time. Any?

Fitness First has closed down. Your choices are Total Fitness, Star Gym, MOB, Wellness, ad Eternal. MOB is not bad.

We're looking for a gym. California Fitness on Huai Hai offered us 10,000RMB/yr/person. It's nice, but there are plenty of gyms in the States that are bigger, nicer, and have much more equipment for half or a quarter of the price. We talked them down to their corporate rate which was about 5,000, or their student rate limited to off-hours at 4,000.

Then we went to Physical, across the street on Huai Hai and a few blocks west. They have a promotion, I have no idea how long it will last, for 1800RMB/yr/person. Their gym seems bigger, though the equipment isn't as nice as California Fitness and it's definitely more crowded. They do offer more classes than California Fitness, though.

If you're a member of 24Hr Fitness in the US, you can get a month free at California Fitness. Even though they're the same organization, you can't transfer your membership, and there's no member discount according to the staff we talked to. The best deal I got in the States at 24Hr Fitness is US$10/month for unlimited hours (after being a member for 3 years). Here, the best deal I can get for California Fitness at a smaller, less equipped gym with limited hours is 5 times as expensive. Seems like California Fitness is a ripoff.

"California Fitness is a ripoff"?.......Have you seriously come to that conclusion based soley on the prices of gyms in Gooberville (The States)?

When comparing gyms, would it not be sensible to compare gyms within the same country?

Maybe you should stay in Gooberville and go to the gym there. Afterall, America is by far the best place for Americans to be....

Ah, yes. Another disgruntled backpacker from a socialist country attacking the American simply because he/she is American. Was it not enough for you to attack their response--albeit clumsily and, in my opinion without justification, that you had to add insult? This, I suppose, is the kind of tolerance and understanding American's are so often accused of lacking.

@california--thanks for the info on CA fitness. I thought their facilities were decent--very clean and, for Shanghai, well equipped, but not worth RMB 10,000. Just out of curiosity, can you provide details on the restrictions for a student or corporate membership. PM if your prefer. Thanks.

I'm a member of California and can use my card at any of the 24 Hour Fitness branches all over the US, paid 5000 RMB for one year and can keep that price indefinitely. You can definitely negotiate down from 10,000 RMB, although you might not get it as low as 5K because I joined 3 months before it opened and got an early bird deal.

@emerson: Nope, not from a socialist country, although it does have a Labour Government, and no, not a backpacker either..... No, wasn't attacking someone just because they are american, just intrigued by people that continually compare prices to their home country - seems pointless to me.... for most things that are more expensive in China, there are a dozen other things that are cheaper, but people seem to focus on the thing that is more expensive.

I agree. It's meaningless when comparing gym prices to compare to the US, just compare with other gyms in Shanghai unless you can fly to the US 3 times a week to work out it's a ridiculous comment to make. Prices are affected by many factors such as rents, equipment, taxes, licenses, competition, demand and so on.

One Wellness is by far [IMO] the best.

One Wellness is dead quiet. How do you work out without pressure from other sweaty hard-muscled bodies pumping iron. Or buxom babies bouncing on the treadmills? I see more personal trainers than patrons there. No motivation at all unless you pay for it.

Post subject: Terra Weider Gym in Cloud Nine?

I am new to the city and to this group. Trying to get feedback on Terra Weider Gym at Cloud Nine Mall. I searched the site and didn't see anything on this gym. It's on the 12th floor.I took a tour and it looks nice enough, clean and also not too crowded (during the day anyway).
Anyone belong there? Know anyone that does? I'm trying to get pricing info from others to be sure I don't get charged a crazy high price.
Thanks!

I just moved to an apartment near Yanlord Riverside and need to find a new gym that is more convenient.. Saw some possibilities by looking through the forum but was wondering if anyone could provide more details on the following re: quality/membership fee? I'm looking mostly to do weights and cardio and was a member of FF before it closed down and then One Wellness.. really liked both of them but the latter is just too inconvenient for me now..

1) Like Suze, thought of Weider Tera at Cloud Nine.. but read some pretty negative feedback by readers at another website.. anyone here can chime in on that?

2) Marriott Health Club as recommended by Citrus..

3) Will's Gym at Zhongshan Park.. saw some input re: the one at Jinmao.. how abt the one at Zhongshan Park?

4) Alexander Gym at Hongqiao (anyone have a reference price I can go by? And is it worth the premium as it sounds like the general consensus is that it's pretty expensive!)

5) Any other gym in that area that you can recommend? Would be much appreciated!

Thanks

If you want to take group classes, Will's Zhongshan could be an option, FF Bobo and Yoko are teaching there now.

I also used to teach at FF. I might have a look at Will's Jin Mao and see if I can teach RPM or Bodypump. Heard that Jin Mao is not too bad, just not too many expats gg there. Though, haven't been there myself yet.

Megafit Pudong could also be an option, but this quite expensive and maybe a little far from where you live.

Does any body know anything about the 1012 wieder tera gym on Pucheng Road in Pudong, next to the Summit apartments? I am looking to join because it really convenient, but i so don't want to have to deal with crap in the showers and hair in the pool (have just read other gym forums). The English part of the website is still "under construction" and my Mandarin is not that great yet. Ta
