Hi, I just got offered 5000rmb/yr/pp at Alexander here on Hongqiao rd. Looks great spreading over 4 floors. Not extreemly big but ok for me. I go there Thursday for a free try out. Spinning class looked fun.[joke removed]. Judging from your stories the price is ok for Shanghai, right?

^hey marketing genius: do you think Peter and Rachael are looking to join a gym based on the number of HOT girls? You're full of it if you think anyone would pay 5000 rmb.

Post subject: Terra Weider Gym in Cloud Nine?

suze wrote:
I am new to the city and to this group. Trying to get feedback on Terra Weider Gym at Cloud Nine Mall. I searched the site and didn't see anything on this gym. It's on the 12th floor.I took a tour and it looks nice enough, clean and also not too crowded (during the day anyway).
Anyone belong there? Know anyone that does? I'm trying to get pricing info from others to be sure I don't get charged a crazy high price.
Thanks!

I checked this gym out when it was opening, went the first week and changing rooms were already disgusting. Never went back

The English part of the website is still "under construction" and my Mandarin is not that great yet. Ta

If that's the one near Fuxing tunnel which I think it is I go there. I have not had any problems with anything like that. It gets a little crowded in the evening so I tend to go in the mornings or at lunch time.

I didn't sign up for the pool so cannot comment on that.

OK, I'm not a marketing guy as CoffeeHawk suggested, just another expat trying to figure out how things work here Smile So went for my free try out and it was fun. Good club in my opinion (alexander, Hongqiou rd) It's clean, you get two towels and a locker, the showers have soap and shampoo. The chinese spinning class was fun, good music, good teacher and easy to follow. They have at least 30 bikes there but we where 7. Even tough I go in their "busy" period 18-20 o'clock. It is not at all crowded. My negotiating skills suck so ended up with paying 5000rmb. But got 20 "points" extra which means I can bring a friend 20 times for free. My colleagues also paid 4800-5000rmb. Hope it helps! //René

Just another option - California Fitness (called 24 Hour Fitness in the US) is opening at Infiniti Plaza on Huai Hai Rd end of October. They also have one in Beijing already.

I think location is a big issue for gym preference as not many people will travel far to their gym if they go frequently.

Is this gym operational? I know their gyms in Singapore are quite good. If they have the same quality machines (+affordable rates), will consider to join.. anyone any update for this?

Yes, it's fully operational and yes, the facilities are very good. The main issue is the price which isn't on the cheap side. I paid around RMB 5k for a platinum membership which allows me access to every single location on the planet, including all the US locations. I'm not sure if there are better value packages if you only need to access the Shanghai location.

i am one such member from Singapore with the platinum membership. i transferred my membership to use in Shanghai (which i dont know why but since they asked i obliged). i used to use the gyms in HK and Taiwan they never asked me to wait for approval..

lately, 6 months after the 1-month wait and transfer approval, they want me to produce a photo identification every time i visit. and also they have asked me to get a letter of approval from singapore and lots of other documentation now.. (too long and i dont want to go into detail).

generally - the gym is ok if not better than singapore in terms of equipment but as far as service and the quality of the members, i think it is no where like singapore. having orange peel in the nice shower rooms and putting bath mats on the floor as floor mats is a start.

i suggest if you are not an original member, dont go there.

If California Fitness here (is that the name?) and 24 hour Fitness (in the States) are the same company/organization ...why is it so expensive here?....because in the US, 24 Hour Fitness is NOT a nice gym..at all!

It's super cheap (in all areas)..probably around 50 dollars a month or less and would never even be called a nice gym much less a luxury gym. You couldn't pay me to work out there (at least the one in the states).

You should be comparing with what's available in China, not with what is back in the States (unless you are flying back to the US frequently enough to factor that in your decision).

As noted above, "their gyms in Singapore are quite good, " and in comparison, "the gym is ok if not better than singapore in terms of equipment."

For any gym, your own tastes and preferences will be most important.
So, you really should go see for yourself.

By the way, lower cost usually means more people (i.e. more crowded, less clean, etc.).

Have been a member at Alexander since 2003 (Xintiandi).
Like it because it was only rarely crowded.
Had a good sales rep, too.

Currently belong to Cal Fitness, but will probably let it expire. Peeved that when I joined, they promised a basketball court would be built within 2-3 months. They still don't have it, so I'm not giving them high marks in the honesty department.

Aside from that, it's much higher end than 24 Hour Fitness in the States. Quite large for a Shanghai gym, first rate equipment.

One cheesy item of note though. Because they have a branding deal with Yao Ming in China, the men's locker room has an adjoining room that is supposedly Yao Ming's. You can look in through the glass door to see sinks that are about 1.5 m high and super tall showers. Yeah, I'm sure he uses it every day in the off season.

Net-net, nice gym. Haven't seen it crowded. Irritated about the b-ball court misrepresentation.

Have been a member of Ambassy club.
Great gym and indoor pool with outdoor pool in summer.
About 11000 RMB per year for a couple, not sure if that includes kids

I would stay away from Tera Wellness Club - XuJiaHui - unless location is your top priority. Facilities are dirty. If you don't believe me take a look at the locker rooms. The club has old machines with limited selection and the weights aren't marked. The club doesn't have a triceps pull-down rope. It is a classic case of "over promise, under deliver". Sales reps will tell you anything to make the sale, and then management says they can't do anything without corporate approval, including simple things such as marking the dumbbells. Management asks for patience. Their mantra, we can't, unless corporate says we can. They do offer a sheepish smile and apology. The current manager seems nice enough, and new to the location, but the club has room for improvement.

was a member at Fitness First until they lost their lease and had to close down. Still haven't found a gym that I like. I checked out Alexander at XTD, but hated their sales tactics. I felt like I was buying a car. They would not give me a price for the membership. Kept going back and forth and I wasted 2 hours there. So I just walked out. They tried to give me better deals but I was just so sick of them at that point, that I'd rather pay more elsewhere and not deal with that ****.

When I lived in Jing'an I was a member of One Wellness and really enjoyed it - although it is a bit more pricey they don't bargin with you - all set prices. It is a "boutique" gym, so smaller with no pool but great new equipment, rarely crowded, yoga classes, juice bar/coffee, outdoor seating for post-gym workout, and massage as well if you want it. Overall nice people, clean and well maintained. All depends on what kind of gym you're looking for.

I was also a member of FF until they closed (at least they paid off all the membership fees outstanding they owed us!) Am now with Ambassy Club on Huaihai and never regretted joining it. It's never crowded except for the "guilt trip" days like right after a major holiday or on Saturday, and then it's like everyone swarms in to condone for their sins of eating and drinking. Highly recommended!

Wills gym at Zhongshan park is going downhill (as of 2009). They've just taken out ALL the lockers in the changing room and replaced them with tiny lockers to squeeze more people in. They've also taken out toilets to do this, so now there are only 2 toilets for about 200 ladies... gross! There is also minimal A/C on the cardio machines so you sweat your face off in the summer.

Also, the pool is very oddly shaped for swimming lengths, which we like to do. It's fine if there are less than 5 people in the pool, but any more and you can't swim in a straight line without swimming up someone's butt!

We are looking for a new gym needless to say!

The tera club gym on the 12th floor of the cloud nine shopping mall is a great gym, however extremely crowded during the after work rush. I've belonged to this gym for 4months now, and enjoy the free weight and machines, along with variety of classes and the roof top pool. While the memberships are generally 1yr and expensive, I was able to work them down to 6months with a slight drop in price. As with anything in China it's negotiable. Hope this helps.

I am also in the market for a new gym. I am looking at Wills and Tera, both near Zhongshan Park. I have read the positive and negative reviews but since they are right next to my office (in Cloud 9) those are my only two options.

Anyone have current pricing on these two gyms?

After a year of broken treadmills and filthy locker rooms at MOB on Xinzha Lu I checked out and subsequently joined W Fitness on the 8th floor of Jin Ying 金鹰 building on Shanxi Bei Road. I paid 2000 RMB for MOB last year and W Fitness is about 3 times that (depending on 1 year 2 year, peak or off peak blah blah blah). W Fitness just opened in August so everything is new but the place is small, actually tiny like a fitness center in a posh hotel, very little in terms of machines and free weights. I have been there regularly now for about 2 weeks and the most people I have ever seen at one time is 12 and that includes two staff relentlessly cleaning the machines. They have some high tech machines (alas I have no idea how to work them) but the place is very clean and very empty. I was also told I can use the membership at all Wills in the city for what it's worth.

Absolutely true, If you are looking for a quiet, clean gym this is very good. Even at its busiest (6:30-8:30pm) there are only 10 people at most. I have never had an issue about waiting in line for a treadmill and the trainers are extremely helpful. Plus the Technogym equipment is really helpful.

The pilates and yoga classes usually only have 2-3 people in them max which is really nice as their cost is included in with the membership. The outdoor deck is really nice as well and the whole workout area is well ventilated.

The only issue is that there are no rowing machines set up.

I may be a little biased on this subject, but Sai Rui MMA & Fitness Club is going to be the most kick-ass gym in Shanghai when it opens next month.

There's no pool. There's no sauna. There's no juice bar.

What you get is a level of athleticism that will smash anything you could ever achieve at a traditional chrome gym- real world knowledge of combat sports and self defense that make other martial arts gyms look like kindergarden by comparision- and above all else, the skills you need to be fit and healthy for life on your own terms.

If you're looking for a place to lounge in a steam room sipping on overpriced sugar water while oogling at women in leotards, Sai Rui MMA is not going to cut it for you. However, if you are looking for a place that will push you to a new level of physical fitness, functional strength, and an unparrallelled work ethic in modern mixed martial arts & combat sports, we will deliver.

6th floor of the Okla Building, 1366 Wuzhong Road & Jinhui Road. Minhang.

Click the link in my sig for more info.
