Post subject: birthday suggestions 8yr old boy

my son is 8 - will be 9 on saturday. we JUST moved here this past week and are staying in a service apt for a bit. we have a driver but no idea where to go. he wants to do "something fun" that's about all we can get out of him.

he really enjoys those all inclusive arcade-type places (which i loathe, but tolerate once a year).

i don't know even where to buy a cake (and i can't bake one here, cuz there's nothing to cook with - so much for "service").

suggestions?

thnx

Went through the exact same thing last month. My daughter turned 8 a couple weeks after we arrived. We bought a nice birthday cake from Paris Baguette (locations all around), let her choose a restaurant, and gave her what seemed (to her) to be a fortune in RMB to spend in the toy department at Yaohan Department Store.

The area near the Pearl Tower is fun. The Aquarium is just up the street and (unfortunately) has an arcade in it. Super Brands Mall (which is in the other direction from the Pearl Tower) has a movie theater, ice skating rink, Tom's World (a large video arcade), Toys 'R Us, and tons of restaurants including Western standby Blue Frog. I think it would be a good all-inclusive birthyday destination.

the 9th or 10th flloor of Yohan/BaBaiBan (PUdong) has a big arcade and a small bowling alley, there's a Hagen Daas ice cream shop on the first floor, and the 6th or 8th floor has a pretty big toy department.

The plaza outside the Museum of Science has many vendors selling kites, and people fly them there too. There are a lot of people rollerblading there too.

Century Park (Pudong) is great place for a picnic, it also has a huge lake and river where you can rent paddle or small motorized boats.

thanks for all the advice.

i was hoping to be finished with the ChuckECheese type place moving here, but i guess i'm outta luck. we found oscar's dvd store yesterday and loaded him up with a bunch of stuff (including his favorite - the simpsons). Embarassed at least we packed a bunch of his prezzies in the luggage.

as an added bonus, i get to do this all over again on tuesday, cuz my daughter is turning 11. what a cruel month october is...

you in pudong? we've been to a couple of parties that were all enjoyable: moon river diner (they do great cakes and the pudong has a little outside playground). and children's technology workshop - the kids LOVED that - and was very well organized (there is one in thumb plaza). and a super great one was at kidsgallery in jinqiao. amazing! there is also a pottery class on saturdays at 10:00 on tai kang road and rui jin road in the art district. tons of stuff Smile

Take him go-carting. He's probably too young but what the hell he's in China its just as dangerous walking around the city with you anyway.

If you need some friends to invite i'm always up for a go-cart run. =)
