So I must say being semi-new to Shanghai I am dissapointed that I haven't been able to find an American Expat Group. I have been to some Aussie functions, there seems to be a strong contingent from Singapore and UK. But no Americans.
I know there are some other Yanks here in Shanghai. Perhaps you are all are trying to lay low from the world-wide anti-american sentiment, but anybody interested in putting something together here? I couldn't think of a better location than the newly opened Applebees in XJH? Or perhaps at Bubba's BBQ.
Topics of discussion could include:
1) Why everbody hates us for saving the world
2) The lack of Beef in Shanghai
3) City Shop having Coors Light
4) How much we will miss Bob Barker
5) And other more serious topics such as how to take over China |

There is a very active American Women's Club - not sure if that is for you since gender is not mentioned in your post. Their website is www.awcshanghai.org
They are the most active expat women's club by far in my opinion - a very good place especially for the trailing spouses to get resources/connected. They do welcome non-Americans as well.
Hope this helps. |

The American expat community, while one of the larger nation groups here, is still just a small part of the total expat group in Shanghai. There a few places to start making connections... try
AmCham
also.. alot of Americans connect at the Community Center though is not an American exclusive club.
In terms of beef.. try checking at Bubba's.. Texas BBQ and American football center of the Shanghai or Malones American Cafe.. or Moon River Diner... it will give you a fix of home. .
No comment on Coors or Bob Barker.. |

Try the AmCham webpage - there is usually lot's of events there. Or check out that's magazin for posting of events. as for your topics.. well, not that we hate Americans.... just maybe there President a bit and sometimes there attitude towards everything non american. And especially thing I always wanted to let you guys know.... SWITZERLAND IS NOT SWEDEN..... we are not even neighbours.... if you ever get your club started let me know and I'll be more than hoppy to stop by and explain the difference between switzerland and sweden... Don't remember how many times I heard that from you folks... |

Hey cowboy, there are loads of yanks around.
Besides, you can also speak to non-americans, we're OK people, really, a bit communist, and islamist round the edges, but we don't hate you so much
PS. Who is Bob Parker, and who cares for coors? |

i was thinking we could all meet up at McDonald's in our pick-up trucks, do some burn-outs, and prοtest local restaurants that have not changed french fries to freedom fries, with Bob Seger plaing in the background. |

CBU,
Count me in...you can only speak to the Ozzies and the Brits for so long before you start talking funny!
Scratch the Coors discussion though....

I think America has already done that.
Look around - McDonalds, KFC, Shiitbucks, Burger King, oh yeah, Applebys and other assorted shite.
Look at the way the local kids dress - they all think they're on some gangsta-rap MTV video.
And Xujiahui is starting to look a bit like some small town in California. Ugly, full of retarded people and everyone 'just loves my accent'.
It's like Christmas in July here right now.... |

We have a Texans in Exile group at Bubba's that's pretty open in terms of "qualifying" as a member. Other than that, every Sunday at Bubba's is basically an American-style Saturday complete with NCAA football, cold beer, and barbeque.....minus the DUIs at the end of it all. |

Oh dear.
There are actually several American groups in Shanghai but most revolve around Uni or state citizenship. Don't expect anything coordinated through AmCham or the Consulate... that won't happen.
That Bob Barker chat could take hours and bring out the ugly side of people... |

Thanks for the info guys. So basically there isn't one catch all American Expat group. The Texans Exile group may be what I'm looking for. I agree with Magnolia the AmCham is pretty weak on social networking events and the like. |

I don't really care who I hang out with as long as I can understand them. That being said, I do have some ideas to share with my fellow Americans on how we might be able to take over Shanghai using a rickshaw army and kite air force. I'm also interested in trying to corner the raman noodle farming market to put the squeeze on college kids back home, so if you ever get something together let me know. Or, if you ever find a group to discuss the finer points of ribs n' whiskey, I'll finish the bottle. |

I didn't know this group was Amercian. I thought it was open to all nationalites? Haven't been for awhile so maybe it has changed.
I think your best bet would be to hang out at Malones or the Long Bar. You'll meet plenty of your fellow nationals there and some "lovely local girls" too.

Wow, now that I think about it, there isn't a proper American's group. Never really realized it before.
Could be that American's are so different regionally from one another. I like to hang with the Bubba's crowd, for instance, because of the ties to Texas and South/SouthWest USA in general. But I'll admit I'd have as much trouble bonding with a person from the Northeast or MidWest USA as I would with someone from Europe.....regional differences between American's are quite significant. Heck, even at Bubba's, I have to hold my tongue when talking to folks who are wearing UT shirts.....I'm an A&M fan.
I guess I'd have to agree with the earlier posts....hang out at Bubba's you'll see plenty of American's there. Especially this weekend with the Chili Cook-off. |

No, i walk around with s**t stuck to my cowboy boots and a big wad of chaw packed into my rotting inner cheek.
Sorry to burst the bubble, but "Earl" isn't very representative of the South. It's more like what a NE'ner thinks the South is like. |
