| Post subject: Columbus Day, Anyone? |
It is interesting to me at the thought of elaborating the title and character as such, Christopher Columbus, New World, Discovery, Adventurer, sounds spicy enough for a new round of the oh-so-last-season-hit-reality show. Only if Columbus had six pack and could never found his shirt.
Heh-heh, not so funny.
Maybe for a brief moment, I would have wondered what the world might have become without CC, but then some voice reminded that most likely some other navigator, possibly and hopefully with a better knowledge of the geography of Asia and South America, would eventually fulfil the role.
Let the myth continue, and
Thank you Mr. Columbus-or-someone-who-did-the-job for another Monday-feeling October Monday in year two thousand and seven. |

I didn't have to Google anything but you're right. Two Bristol merchants called Croft and Jay were familiar with the North American coastline before Columbus. |

Actually.....
Leif Ericsson, Old Norse Leifr Eiriksson, fl. A.D. 999-1000, Norse discoverer of America, b. probably in Iceland; son of Eric the Red. He spent his youth in Greenland and in 999 visited Norway, where he was converted to Christianity and commissioned by King Olaf I to carry the faith to Greenland. According to the "Saga of Eric the Red" in the collection of sagas known as Hauksbok, it was on the return voyage from Norway to Greenland in 1000 that Leif Ericsson, blown off his course, discovered hitherto unknown lands in which he found grapes, self-sown wheat, and a species of trees called "mausur." He landed, secured specimens, and continued to Greenland, where he was successful in introducing Christianity. In another version of the story, interpolated in the "Saga of Olaf Tryggvason" in the Flateyjarbok, Leif completed his mission to Greenland, set out from there c.1002 on a voyage to western lands, discovered several places, and settled for a winter in Vinland. This account is much more detailed, but the account in the "Saga of Eric the Red" is more widely accepted. Many scholars believe that Leif Ericsson landed on some part of the North American coast, but there has been no agreement on the modern identity of Vinland. Various sites have been nominated, from Newfoundland to Virginia, with Nova Scotia and New England as favorites. For the sources, see A. M. Reeves, The Finding of Wineland (1895, repr. 1973).
See also E. F. Gray, Leif Eriksson (1930, repr. 1972); M. Thordarson, The Vinland Voyages (1930); E. Reman, The Norse Discoveries and Explorations in America (1949). |

Muwahahaha.
So fukin' predictable.
The North American coastline has thousands, and thousands, and thousands of kilometers, claiming anyone was "familiar" with it is at best an over simplification. Also, they set sail to fish cod, which is does not exist in the southern part of the North Atlantic, so, no, they didnt "know the extensive coast of North America", they caught cod fish and brought back to Bristol, which was quite smart.
Guess what, your BRITISH pals didnt go to the history books, just like Santos Dummont didnt go either.
Cry me a river. |

Look, hc, can't you get it through your thick skull that the British discovered loads of places and set up all the trade lines without having to atack any of the natives.
Jolly good show, what what?? |

That's because he's from Oop North. It's grim oop there, lad.
Ask him if he has a flat cap, breeds ferrets or has a cage full of pigeons.
He probably does.

Det. Christopher Colombo was alright. I never knew he was a sailor though.
Kindly get rooted,

I think it’s a terrible shame that Europeans colonized the Americas (dreadful name, that) and virtually eliminated the peace-loving indigenous Indians (another dreadful name) through the use of guns, germs, and steel.
We would be so much better of if this had never happened. In fact, it would have been so much nicer if a few white folks had settled the Americas (Ugh! That name again!) and followed the nice Indian (sorry) customs of ritualistic child sacrifice, killing the losing team after sports competitions, and best of all – cutting the beating heart out of the chest cavity of a human sacrifice for whatever-the-hell reason. |

Ha. You see, the feminist victimization constantly spills over to other areas of our psique.
While all this Indian thing you said was going on people were being thrown alive in big fires in the name of "god".
To justify killing the indians because they had these kind of rituals is beyond lame Goosie.
It's much easier to justify it the Darwinistic way, and that has been the rule and will be the rule forever. The weaker will -always- get the short end of the stick. Always.
Sad but true. |

HC, my post does not attempt to justify killing Indians due to their rituals. Not the point AT ALL. Please read carefully. |

The great land mass that you call America wasnt discovered by anyone. Its already been inhabited by its true owners, American Indians, Aztecs, Mayans , Incans...etc. And now being discriminated in their own land. I remember watching a film and a certain restaurant in USA would not allow Americans Indians. Im just thinking they are one of the original owners of that land. Gosh! |
