I have a friend in the US right now, is it possible for him to just go in a store and buy an iphone without SIGNING up for a contract to bring back to me? How much would this cost?

2 iPhones can be bought with each credit card. The Apple store price in US is $399 or slightly higher with tax.

Thank you! Didn't know it was so easy.

How much does the sim card hack cost here in Shanghai? I'll admit there is too much information for me to go through right now for iphones! don't know where to start, but if a simple hack to the sim card only gets me up and running it sounds perfect if I don't have to mess around with the phone!

Everyone who bought iPhones from me asked for software hack, so I never dealt with multi-sim.

In Xujiahui they are asking for RMB300 for the device that needs to be attached to your SIM to make it run on 1.1.2

hi
i bought a 1.0.2 . tried to install installer.app and now it only says "please connect to itunes" because there was an error. So is it just for me to restore to factory settings.. and the jailbreak? or is it a little bit more complicated? the stores in hk plaza opens at what time? i don't think i have time to fix it before i go home... argh

Its a little more complicated.

I post whated I did above, you'll need the firmware 1.1 and 1.2 files etc as well as the various hacks. Given the time involved, might be worth spending 300 and getting a simhack. The phone would still need to be jailbroken to use 3rd party apps though.

I can hack the phone if you need it done, and want 1.1.2

the phone is originally 1.0.2 and i don't want 1.1.2. At most i would go for 1.1.1 without turbosim. so if i restore with 1.0.2 firmware and then jailbreak?

I'm not exactly sure on all the terms yet, but I believe you need to "jailbreak" your iphone so you can install ssh and some other programs onto the phone (which you need to set up the turbosim).

To use 1.1.2 iPhone you have to use hardware unlock method - put a multisim inside the phone.
To use 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 it is enough to use a software unlock method, which is a set of manipulations with the phone and software.

If I go to taobao and type in turbosim, there are about 3 different versions of products for sale. Does anyone have experience with these differnet ones? Also can anyone tell me if they are preprogrammed to AT&T, so i all I have to do is cut my own sim and plug it in, or will I have to program it like a blank turbosim?

I can't read chinese, I put teh text into a translator but can't figure out if its already programmed or not.

Go buy it at a store, its easier.

You need to cut the simcard slightly, not a big deal.

1.1.2 software unlock? There's a little buzz about this going on in hackintosh.

Probably will be one eventually, eventually looking like now Smile

I'm more excited about the WeiSMS application actually. (Google Code Weisms - sms in Chinese finally! (and english))

TurboSim's cost 200-300rmb here, so I'd lean towards using those, rather than spending a few hours hacking the damn thing. Time is money...

If you are talking about an application which allows to type SMS on iPhone in Chinese, then there are several available as freeware for some time now.
It's maybe the other features of WeiSMS that make it a good utility for iPhone.

hi everybody!

can anybody explain me what does "unlock" an Iphone means exactly?

Also, do you think is a good phone for mobility needs in China?

Any idea about the updated prices and the best place to buy it in Shanghai?

Thank you for your help! wink2

I bought one yesterday, as the moving company we hired to move my apt contents stole my phone... Took substantially longer than planned because of the theft, and the police were useless. Don't use Yong Xing...

4400 with turbosim.

Right now you can jailbreak any iPhone. Jailbreak means to let you install anything you want on the phone.
Unlocking usually means allowing it to be used with any simcard. By default the iPhone is locked to one provider, if its a USA phone, then AT&T, if from Europe (usually France), then country locked to France.

This is where it gets more complicated.

If the phone originally came with a firmware (software inside the phone that makes it work) thats <1>= 1.1.2 then you *currently* need hardware (a turbosim or equivalent) to use the phone.

Given that Apple will be upgrading the firmware every few months, it makes more sense to buy a turbosim for 200-300rmb, and use that in the phone.

I've software hacked 3 phones now so they could be upgraded to 1.1.2, and its not that much fun, just time consuming, so I recommend get a iPhone and a Turbosim if you want an iPhone.

iPhone Chinese support is spotty. If you use Chinese a lot, then this isnt the phone for you yet...

I mean that support is not great.

Emails that are in Chinese don't come in as Chinese.
Chinese Web pages can be read.

If you want "chinese" as a language, you have to use 3rd party apps to enable it. Those aren't all as nice UI or functionality wise as you'd like.

So was your turbosim actually turbosim brand or some other? Also was it preprogrammed to AT&T already or did they program it on the spot?

I do my own stuff typically.

I haven't got a iPhone for myself yet, mine arrives later today.
I have 2 on my desk though, one I'm jailbreaking now, and a loaner as my phone was stolen.

The Chinese TurboSims's are probably copies of whatever the "real" one is.

All the phone's I've had so far are 1.0.1's, except for the new 1.2 I have on the desk I'm busy hacking.

The Chinese use the old crappy hack usually, so its a bit of a pain to redo it so I can upgrade them.

i.unlock.no has some nice tools though.

The 1.1 I had to:

restore baseband to older one.
firmware restore 1.1, jailbreak
revirginize.
firmware restore 1.1, jailbreak
octoprep
firmware update 1.2
anysim 1.2u
Which left me with 1.2 and usable with a Chinese Sim.

The 1.2 I'm currently doing is:
Restore to 1.1
Jailbreak
Octoprep
Upgrade back to 1.2
Wait for the turbosim to arrive later.

You need a lot of various bits and pieces to do all this.

jailbreak.rar for 1.2
Ndependance 3 beta
anysim 1.2u from a installer source (I use ssh or modmyiphone.com/installer.xml)
the various firmware files to restore, install from apple site.
etc

I'm on a Mac, so the PC files would be different. I think you'd replace iBrickr for Ndependance.

The stores generally don't know about this stuff that well (or at least not to the degree I do).

The Turbosim's here will emulate an AT&T card, essentially they intercept the SIM Card commands and lie to the iPhone.

I'll reiterate, I recommend getting a TurboSim or clone thereof. Much simpler.
