I mean that support is not great.

Emails that are in Chinese don't come in as Chinese.
Chinese Web pages can be read.

If you want "chinese" as a language, you have to use 3rd party apps to enable it. Those aren't all as nice UI or functionality wise as you'd like.

I see

and there's no way to improve this lack of support downloading any software?

it looks like is better to wait until the product enters this market

meanwhile do you know other good alternative suggestions for such kind of mobility needs in China?

i have two HTC the P3300 and the TyNTII
awesome PPC, not even in the same category as phones, before that i had nokias, a few motorola and my motorola PDA doesn't compete with HTC.

I like HTC Touch and also HTC S710

especially the Touch looks very similar to Iphone, maybe a bit less graphical but probably most suitable to china and chinese use

I don't know about the price buy I can bet it must be cheaper than Iphone

I'm waiting for the HTC Touch Cruise.

Either that or the w960i (Sony Ericsson) - can safely say I would never buy an iPhone though!

the two HTC i have come with built in GPS, this in itself was one of the key attractions for me plus easy to go out and mod them, or take the to any little telephony shop to have something done... the Iphone, is perfect as a gimmick IMO probably ideal for chinese, as a smoke and mirrors phone. has many people fooled Laughing

well dopod is owned by HTC now so many bigger reputable stores selling mobile phones have dopods though, not so many models, depending where you go to. since i dont live in SH any longer i can't help you on that one too much -try HK plaza on huahai lu, or the phone markets off baoshan lu opp MRT line 3. or XJ

I think iCosta for iPhone provides a good support for Chinese input, with several types of input methods available. It installs into the shell, so the user can switch between English and Chinese keyboards in any application. I also don't remember having problems receiving SMS in Chinese from an iPhone.

I got an HTC Touch in Metro Town (Xu Jia Hui) 3 days ago for 3000rmb.

HTC Touch is from Taiwan, the mainland version is Dopod, but I've asked the stores and Dopod can only have Chinese menu and it costs 4800rmb. They could install English menu for Dopod but then you would lose all the warranty.

For the price of Dopod, you might as well get an iphone. Iphones are 4700rmb-4800rmb when I asked around. Did the price go up? I thought I remember it to be less than that.

Yeah Iphone prices seem to be going up - reason they are giving is that the newer firmware is harder to hack. I bought mine a bit over a month ago for 4250 at HK plaza. I want to get all my staff one (there are only a couple of us) but the prices have gone up.
I love mine, but it does feel very limiting to how much I can configure it and the internet is very slow. Does the HTC Touch use CDMA?

I have everything working on mine in 1.1.2, unlocked, chinese ok.

Suggest you install iCosta as per above.
That works for sending SMS.

Go to installer.
Sources
Add Source, http://iphone.freecoder.org/rep/

Refresh.

Localization, install the Pinyin one for 1.1.2 (or Wubi if you can type using that).

I'll do an unlock for 300RMB, and the upgrade / downgrade to 1.1.2 if people are interested.
Its a hassle, and involves multiple steps, but I've done it enough times now!
