kappakai, mandms, and other iphone lovers,
i want to join the ranks of iphone users in shanghai but i am a little nervous/confused about this whole unlocking and upgrading issue. so its possible -- even for a less tech saavy person like me -- to upgrade and then unlock the phone again? is this difficult?
also any idea what to expect if i take the phone back to the states over the holidays and put in an old att sim? (wanting to keep my us number, i have kept a barebones account active with them.) will that relock the phone as well?
i would really appreciate it if someone could clear up this issue so i can get my iphone soon!
thanks |

hey senn
at this point there is no need to upgrade and unlock phones. the change from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 is minimal. you get access to the itunes store online and the speakers are slightly louder. that's really about the only changes there are.
to upgrade and unlock is a relatively easy process for someone with a degree of comfort around a computer. there are lots of step by step instructions out there. however, ask yourself this... if your iphone seems to lock up or go under, will you freak out? because there's a chance it will happen, and you need some search and tech skills to bring it back up. if that possibility upsets you, i'd say you probably don't want to do it yourself...
do you know what:
1. an rar file is?
2. what telnet is?
3. are you comfortable with a command line?
4. do you know what a file permission is?
if not, don't do it yourself. find someone else to do it for you. however, when you buy the phone here, they can get you going initially, and the phone is in very working condition.
if you take the phone back to the states and switch the sim, well... it depends on how the phone was unlocked. there is a process called a lockdown. the iphone resets some settings when a new sim is inserted. this reset can be circumvented, but i'm not 100% positive on this. it should not relock the phone though. |

I bought my iphone for 4800 RMB. They were the only ones packed as per the original packing (although already hacked) and the IMEI and serial numbers all matched when comparing box with iphone software. I found cheaper places that sold the iphone for 4500 RMB but I decided to go with a shop that seemed more reliable. |

| Post subject: IPHONE & AN E-DICTIONARY APP WANTED |
Paul 2008 & the others here: I am looking to purchase an Iphone but hoping that I can download an English-Chinese (pinyin) dictionary/translator app. I was hoping someone had some experience seeing as how combining a cell phone, e-dictionary & mp3 player is a sweet package. Any ideas, leads on where to go would be appreciated.
Cheers: DANIEL |

Danielleaf, The only Chinese-English dictionary available for iPhone is weDict with Chinese add-on. It cannot be installed through Installer. The easiest way is to ask a seller (or me) to install the application and the Chinese package with it.
As for 4500 iPhone, I am selling my iPhones here for a very long time for a price always lower than what can be found on the market. I sold an unopened iPhone for 4500, unlocked it, installed applications and added Chinese input few days ago. |

Paul 2008,
Does that Chinese-English dictionary allow you to enter Hanzi? I'm looking for something where I can write the character and get the pinyin and English definition. Thanks. |

There is a Chinese input program, that allows writing hanzi in any application, including the dictionary.
There are currently no Chinese dictionaries with pinyin available for iPhone as far as I know. |

Hello everyone... it's my first post here.
Just a quick update... for all who is looking/thinking to buy an iPhone... just wait and get it after x'mas.
Prices are going to drop to US$249.99/unit
Most or even all the new iPhone selling in the Apple store in the US are 1.1.2
1.0.2 and 1.1.1 are getting harder to come by.
Wait for the newest hack for 1.1.1/1.1.2 and price drop after x'mas. |

iPhones are at less than 4000 now for the 8G, 3700 is the lowest I've seen.
I just played around with another one yesterday (re-hacked it for a friend, who updated it accidentally). Its growing on me, although the soft keyboard is still hell to type on in unix. |

I think 3700 RMB would be for the 4GB, somebody is mistaken. The average price in Xujiahui for 8GB is 4500-4800 RMB. If you buy then make sure the Serial No. and IMEI number are the same on the phone and on the box, otherwise there is probably something wrong with it.
When I was shopping around for the 8GB the cheapest I could find was 4500 RMB... But I opted for the more expensive 4800 RMB because of a properly sealed package, more professional store and Serial and IMEI numbers were same on phone and box.
A good place to buy in Xujiahui is on the forth floor next to a real Apple shop. They sell their iphones in properly sealed packaging, although still hacked. Just looks more professional and they can add some more apps. on it too. Comes with Chinese language SMS. |

LM,
got mine for 4200 (8gb) at XJH. first store outside the arcade on the right hand side. they have some choice stuff there. that was about 6 weeks ago. 3700 is entirely possible for an 8gb. i believe the 4gb at the same store was quoted to me at 3500. |

Yes, I guess possible. How about the Serial No. and EMEI on back of phone, back of box and in phone software (under settings, general). Does it all match? If not then I can understand the price.
I probably overpaid for mine (4800 RMB), although it was quite a popular store... But, like I said, the cheapest price I was quoted after going around to different stores was 4500 RMB. 4650 RMB is what most people quoted me.
The shop I bought from wouldn't budge from their price even when I walked away. Had a look at the other stores selling for 4500-4650... boxes all opened. Not saying that there will be a problem with those but... |

Average price right now is 4600-4800. I asked all around Xujiahui today. Sellers raised their prices about 15 days ago, because they are apparently running out of 1.1.1 version phones. |

yup, numbers matched.
i think prices are probably up due to tightening by apple with that CC thing, in addition to the 1.1.2 phones. |

L.M. are you caucasian by any chance? Although it defies logic I have seen many instances where traders are unwilling to go lower for westerners even though they will for Chinese. I've seen it for 4000 and it's definitely 8gb, not 4gb and of course everything matches.
Also of course some retailers didn't buy in at such a low price so they can't go lower but that doesn't mean others who have sourced the product elsewhere can't. |

I bought mine 10 days ago for 4800 and asked every single store that sells iphones. The lowest price was 4500 RMB but they didn't have the iphone at their store at that time.
Many stores were telling me the iphone price varies depending on supply and demand. While today might be 4600-4800, tomorrow may be 4000 or lower or maybe even higher. Makes sense I guess.
If you check out taobao.com then you can get it cheaper. However be careful buying from that site. |

Yes, I am caucasian, however my Chinese is very fluent and I am definitely not one to get a bad deal, usually
When I buy things I always shop around and never buy immediately. Usually I go around and ask the price. They will quote me, then I will ask for their cheapest price, they will go lower, then I ask for their namecard and tell them to write their best price on the back, I tell them if they are the cheapest then I will return, the price then lowers more. This way I get the best price possible, usually. I spent 3 days, not consecutive, researching prices for Iphone at Xujiahui and I agree with Paul2008, they put their prices up. |

Me too. On the installer apps program there still isn't a dictionary available. So I guess we will have to wait. |
