QQ is a small 800cc car made by a Chinese Car Company named Chery. |

The QQ is a direct copy of Chevrolet Spark in the US and Chery have been sued but I don't think the law suit was very successful. |

QQ is actually manufactured by Chery Automotive. They were successfully sued by Chevrolet, and from memory the award was something like US$1million. anyway Chery make the original QQ compact in either 800ccor 1100cc, but they have added an immense range of vehilces now, including sedans, and SUV's... its the number one brand based on sales to the domestic market, though they (Chery) along with other Chinese domestic automotive manufacturers are exporting to African, European and the Americas... |

Geely is the other big manufacturer doing well on the local market... there assembly plant is just round the corner from my office in zhejiang province... but as a few other laowais have come to realise (and i benefit from their collective experiences) while the cars may look all nicely dolled up from the outside, after a year or two, the rattle and squeak like the proverbial virgin... some of them are down right death traps... as to be quoted by some of them... meanwhile i bought a nice Japanese car... |

I don't think Chery has obtained permission to sell their cars in North America yet.
On a tangent, has anyone bought a car, preferrably a new one, from abroad and shipped it into China? How bad is the shipping cost? I know it depends on where it's from, but just to get a general idea. What are the obstacles you'd have to clear once the car is here? Is the whole process worthwhile? I'm thinking because of the huge price difference and arguably the quality difference as well. Anybody has any idea? |

shipping is cheap. 1500USD from the US will probably do it. Its the quota slot and permits and import tax that will get you. good luck. |

Yes shipping is not costly but taxation is going to kill you. |

Spark vs. QQ...headon collision. Which would suffer more damage? Hehe. |

QQ speedbump? haha. I wouldn't imagine that GM designed the Spark to be some revolutionary marvel in automotive safety, but I bet they build em with the extra channels in the doors, etc. |

*Where did you buy it from?
Buick car dealer
*How much does it cost?
We paid Buick RMB208K for the car and full insurance. We also have to pay another 8.55% of car value sales and purchase tax.
*What year?
Just bought yesterday
*What model?
Buick Lacrosse 2.5L full spec with leather interior
*New or Used?
Brand New
*Annual tax?
RMB1440 - RMB2400 (road tax depending province/city) + RMB450 (car inspection fees)
*Registration? (Paperwork, fees, etc.)
Depends on where you register your car number plate. This month Shanghai plate bidding will be announced on 20th and expected to hit RMB50K.
*Was it worthit?
We think it is worth it. We rented a Buick with driver before buying this car and it cost us more than RMB100K per year rental fees. Our driver resigned from the rental car company and work directly for us now. To ease the burden, we are also considering car sharing, anybody interested may PM me.
*Recomendation for the buyers and sellers?
Try not to buy a second hand car through a second hand car dealer at those multi storey second hand car market. The condition of the car is not guaranteed. |

Personal opinion don't worry about a car here - take public transportation: buses, taxis and subway, they are all clean, quick to get you where you need to go and much much cheaper.
Trust that this is your 'better' option. |

/\ That is true enough, but if you want to travel outside of Shanghai on a weekend, which we often do, then you need a car.
I would not go near a Cherry in any form no matter what the price, ditto for any other locally made car except those made by JV's. aS said above they look OK when new but after a year they look very crappy. Corners are cut in all areas of production to keep the price down resulting in a poor quality.
We first bought a GM Sail and then two years back sold it and bought a Hyundai Coupe. |

Public transport is good enough if it is mainly for use through and fro office and day to day use within Shanghai. I personally prefer the metro rather than travelling in a car and getting stuck in the traffic.
A car is necessary due to the nature of my husband's work that requires frequent visit to clients/suppliers in different places within Shanghai and suburbs like Suzhou, Wuxi etc. However, he does not need to use them everyday and we travel overseas frequently.
So, if anyone need a driver with car on part time basis or on one off basis, just PM me. At least, you won't have to pay the unreasonable high rental fees of rental car company and you are assured of safety (full insurance & driver with good driving skill) and comfort (brand new Buick Lacrosse). |

I am looking at either a Hyundai (or one of their Chinese JV partners) van or their Sonata. They are priced around RMB150K. Generally good quality. |

there are many cars out on the market between 50-150,000 RMB that are decent esp for the pricing the Shanghai tax and license is the killer 40k maybe think about going outside of SH such as Hangzhou,, I paid 5500 RMB ,, just cant travel the expressway or tunnels between certain hours,,, other than that no big deal
for me it has been worth it,, its nice to get out and go 4x4 off roading and camping and site seeing on the weekends,, Plus I have a dog,, one of the best moves Ive made even with the frustration of the traffic,,,,,
send me a PM if you want to know the dealers I used to buy my cars |
