| Post subject: Comming to SH-is it as good as they say?? |
Hi everyone, just been told that I am on the way to SH after end Q1 08 from australia for at least 3 years. Executive with a US multinational, office in Pudong. Divorced, wont be accompanied, late 40's, pretty good health etc. Neither fat or balding LOL!! I do like to party a bit-2nd life I suppose.
Enough about me. I have heard that SH is fantastic to live and to experience. The expat community is pretty good and all that. I havent done a pre visit or anything as yet. The company is paying a pretty good package. Where would some great places to live close to pudong?
Cheers M... |

if you like a good party may be you want to live in puxi?
this is where most of the good places are ............. the bad ones too i suppose what is good for one is not necessaraly good for others/
from what you write about you it looks like you are advertising for you to find a girl already.
if your office is in pudong with the traffic you may want also consider living in pudong depends on your priorities.
there is many threads on this website about housing already just make a search and you will find it.
welcome to china ........ i mean shanghai (shanghai is not china not really representative of it) |

Welcome to Shanghai.
Pudong's fine to live in, but Puxi is better to enjoy life with. |

"from Australia" is the only description needed to have a good time in Shanghai. (unless you're aborigine) |

O no worries, mate! Consider yourself sold. From what you described of yourself, SH girls will be throwing themselves at you as soon as you land and you can't pry them off fast enough. Bring yourself some blue bills 'cuz you're gonna be busy! |

The context sounds like you need to live in Puxi. You could have a great second life here.
Pudong is a big area, depends very much where in Pudong your office is, you may be able to commute. Also depends on your office hours, if you can avoid the peak times, the commute is not too bad.
I start late and finish late, if you can do the same then its no problem. |

just one to thing to remember for your safety..
plz don't forget to turn your head left and right before you cross the road even at the green right. you may never know when you are going to be hit.. they drive cars quite wild here.
except for that it depends on how adjustable you are to this new enviornment. if i put my two cents' worth.. it has many things to see, fun and dynamic. but you may miss good services ,clean air or sometimes open-minded people. |

Well, it is alright for a while, however Shanghai never really filled the gap left from Maoming Rd and the night life now is but a mere semblance of the bohemian madness that it used to be... But there are some decent pubs/clubs and if you are single, finding young nubile local girls is not terribly difficult, although that is also not nearly as easy as it used to be... |

Shanghai is divided by a river, to the East is Pudong, to the west is Puxi.
You'll need a 'look-see' trip to figure out which side you want to live on.
If you have a demanding job, you may want to live close to your work, in Pudong, but near the river so you can get to Puxi easily. If you can afford the time to go out 4 times a week, you may want to live in Puxi. |

Mate, where abouts in Pudong is your office?
I suggest staying somewhere close to Lujiazui - which is pretty much close to the river on the Pudong side. All the nightlife occurs on the Puxi side, however if you were to stay in Lujiazui you are really only about a 15-20 min taxi ride (or even Metro) to the Puxi areas... I do spend quite a bit of time on the Puxi side also.
I myself am staying on the Pudong side, due to work also being on that side and I have no troubles getting home from Puxi at any time. Sure beats having to spend longer trying to get to and from work every day...
I'm also from Australia - pay attention to what greenish has just said. It took me a while to get used to looking the other way (left) first... almost got run over (by bikes) a few times already. Just to repeat, they do drive like wild here... |

Even if you were fat and balding you'd have no problem finding girls to hang out with you, trust me (even though I'm also not yet fat and balding). |

Quit the job and stay in Oz. This place is death. It will suck the life out of you. When it and the soul sucking who.res that inhabit it.
Vile, evil, death house.
Very much a turd in gift wrapping. |

If I knew Shanghai was like this before I moved here, I would never have come here (although I'm in Hangzhou now until Wednesday).
Shanghai does drain me, the mrs can't stand the place anymore either (we were on line 1 getting to shanghai south station around 6:40pm today) |

Come on, Shanghai is awesome but frightening for your first 3 months. 3-6 months you wish you were back home. After 6 months you go to some beach in SE Asia for a week. Shanghai is awesome again. Now you know a few people and have a few locals to hang out in, you also have enough taxi chinglish to get by. You feel good about yourself. Then China kicks you in the guts for a couple of months, its crap. Then you feel like you have earned your stripes, its still hard but you have some drinking buddies. You are now king. |

Somehow by reading his posts I get this impression this "LOL" guy is going to raise the level of the Australian community in Shanghai. |

^no, he's too positive, after the honeymoon period he'll crash hard. It's better to have a little fear of the unknown - expect the worst and hope for the best, don't assume an expat assignment in such a vastly culture is a one way ticket to Disneyland. It's better to knock the crap out of the OP now so he'll be used to the subway rides once he gets here. |

Better to be coming to Shanghai from Oz than going to Oz from Shanghai. As a single 40 something on a good package, you will enjoy immensely but, as has been pointed out, will suffer some culture shock and frustration, a small price to pay, and talking of paying, forget about the "modest price of 1,000 rmb" girls, no need to pay to play in Shanghai. I agree with the "live close to work" and travel to your nightlife sentiments though live close to the river in Pudong, and/or near a Line 2 metro station for easy access to Puxi. |
