Post subject: Region of Perth

Hi,

We plan to go to visit Perth and around with small kids for about 10 days.

We have heard it is a beautiful region, can anyone tell me what is not to be missed (not much interested in wineries) ? Is renting a motorhome a good option ?
How generally is the weather around end of december ?

thanks for any suggestion.

Perth is gorgeous around that time, expect to spend some time on the beach (but wear at least 30+ sunscreen, the sun over there is stronger than u can imagine and it is very easy to burn). I think public transport is quite good however it is cheap and convenient to rent a car and since Perth isn't that huge it's not too hard to navigate your way through town.

I would recommend u to spend some time in Fremantle, which is located about 30 min train ride from Perth. It's a cute little community... w a nice enough beach, a not-to-be-missed harbour, cafes, pubs and restos.. Pay a visit to Little Creatures for the best beer in town! Also, don't miss out on having a pic nic in King's park (in Perth), go for some sunset cinema (lovely around that time), and in terms of beaches.. well.. cottonsloe, Scarborough, Leighton.. U can't go wrong! Cottonsloe is a very cute little suburb too.

I lived in Perth for 4 years before moving to China.. I loved it. People are extremely friendly and helpful over there, it's so easy to strike up a chat w anyone and I loved the whole atmosphere of the town. You guys are so lucky to be going!

Perth is my hometown.

At the end of December Perth can be hot, usually temperatures should be around 35 degrees plus.

As 'balloon' mentioned, go to Fremantle (known as "Freo" locally), if you have kids, go to the Perth Zoo, definitely go to the beach, Cottesloe or Scarbourgh are two of the most popular. A visit to "Hillary's Boat Harbour" is worth it, they have plenty of things for kids too such as "Aqua" (under water aquarium, sea creature displays etc) there are lots of Cafe's and things there too. Go visit "Kings Park" and overlook the city, the view is very good a night. Mosty hotels will certainly point you in the right direction. While you're there take time to enjoy some of the clearest skies I have ever seen, and enjoy the quietness of the place.

Take the trip to Rottnest Island. You can hire bikes to get around and if you are lucky you will see the Quoka's, a marsupial that is a bit smaller than a wallaby.

If you are hiring a car drive down via Pemberton and Margaret River through the southern forest region. If you get down to the coast then make sure you do the Tree Top Walk near Walpole. The kari trees are huge and worth the travel just to see them.

Pemberton & Margaret river are in the heart of the wine growing region.

Accomodation is no problem. We rented a nice place their, sort of holiday bungalow.

So it's not the real and proper Perth in Scotland!

Travelling with small kids..... I would take them to Kings Park for picnic and dinner, Freo for Fish&Chips, Swan Valley for chocolate factory (small), Caversham for hug koalas and feed kangaroos, Hillary Habour for Aquarium and lunch, beaches (various). I definately would rent a car as Perth is very spread out and taxi is expensive.
For more than a day trip, I usually take my visitors to the southwest (December is very hot up North) Pemberton for karri forrest and climbing tree, then there's tree walk, caves, beaches, wineries on the way...usually the route is Perth, Bunbury, Busselton, Margret River, Pemberton, Tree walk (can't remember the town), Denmark, Albany, Esperance, Wave rock (can't remember the down), York then Back to Perth. I did that in 2 days but very tiring.... 3 days would be better but I you have to do more stops in between to keep the kids happy as the route I described is roughly 1600km.

Swim with the dolphins in Rockingham. I believe this is also child friendly.
As Ballon said, have a beer at little creatures brewery. Fantastic, its making me homesick thinking about it......

Can also go along the Swan River near the University of Western Australia or the foreshore near Attadale, good for picnics with a view of the city.

I would also do some sort of day river cruise from Perth to Fremantle as that is very scenic and great for kids to be on boat

just to add, that while perth is great and there is much to do, it would be wise to also get out of the city as other posters have advised...
try getting yourself a two berth camper if you can afford it and do a round trip taking in...
the southwest;
check out the caves, beaches, and small cafes on the way
so from Perth head south to, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River, Pemberton, (karri forest and tree walk), Denmark, Albany, Esperance, Wave rock, York, but you could also tack on heading directly north heading to the Goldfields once you get to Esperance take the route heading north up to Coolgardie and even Kalgoorlie (the largest open pit gold mine and biggest outback town). The Goldfields really will be a contrast to the green trip that you would take through the southwest. All is doable within a week. (Done it many times myself)...

heading back from the Goldfields to Perth means you would have made a complete loop.

Have fun, just keep in mind it will be warm/hot... which is why heading north of Perth to the Kimberley region is not such a good idea for that time of the year, though it also has a lot to offer.

There also the stunning Pinnacles which are north of Perth. At Yanchep, also north you can attend some Aboriginal cultural demonstrations. Plenty of info and very freindly and helpful staff at the WA tourism bureau next to the Post Office in Perth.

One thing to bear in mind is that it is a HUGE state and travel times to stunning places like Esperance, Wave Rock, Pemberton and Albany and the sights north take a very long time so you need to plan really well to make the most of your time there. WA has so much to see in so little time but am sure you will enjoy what yo do see and experienec. Don't forget to try our local dish, the meat pie and tomato sauce.

How much is it to go from Perth from here?? I bet more expensive than flying to Syney....

Fox -I've done the Bali-Lombok-Gili too... 10 days for that sounds a bit short because u'll b spending a lot of time on boats.. But it's beautiful over there. Enjoy!
