Post subject: RIAA wants the gov't to withhold student aid and grants

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/bad-government/new-bill-would-deny-schools- funding-if-they-dont-comply-with-the-riaa-321541.php

In a ridiculous display of just how much you can get done in government if you have enough money, a new bill on the House floor states that if colleges don't police their networks and do the RIAA and MPAA's bidding as well as buy into services such as Napster for their entire student body, they'll lose all their federal funding. Yep, that means if a college doesn't want to hand over names to the RIAA they'll lose things like their Pell grants, depriving thousands of low-income students from financial aid. Wow.

Just in case you weren't sure whether or not the RIAA was completely evil, this pretty much proves it. A letter from a group of university officials has this to say about the bill:

Such an extraordinarily inappropriate and punitive outcome would result in all students on that campus losing their federal financial aid--including Pell grants and student loans that are essential to their ability to attend college, advance their education, and acquire the skills necessary to compete in the 21st-century economy.

Hopefully the offending language will be sliced right out of this bill before it has a chance to become a law, forcing universities to become lapdogs of an industry group because said industry group has lots and lots of money for lobbyists. [News.com via Broadband Reports]

record industry associated of america (something like that)
motion picture associated of america (ditto)

basically, the record and movie labels. they have no dominion over china, but are trying to push their own legislation through the us government. looks like they are trying to create a fourth branch of government and having the government enforce THEIR laws.

ermmm.... screw p2p, go old school... newsgroups!!! super fast dl's, no worries about viruses.

but yah, stick it to the man.

a good question posed was... what's the larger amount? the money the riaa/mpaa is spending to lobby and legislate, or the money they're losing to piracy?

easynews.com

$10/month subscription service. i get upwards of 300K/s downloads using a download manager.

you can search for files at

binsearch.info

all in all, a much better experience than P2P.

If I have to pay for it, I wouldn't consider it a "better" experience. Razz

well, you get what you pay for. i just had bad experiences with P2P ever since audiogalaxy went down. 75% of the time, you have to download 3 copies of a file because you're never sure which one is good. every now and then you get a virus. $10/month is a small fee to pay for fast, clean, reliable downloads.

stuff is free for a reason.

I just go to reputable sites, and I've never had a real problem.

Seldom do I have to download more than one copy of something, and most of the time when I do, it's my own "analness" that makes me. Usually nothing "wrong" with the copy, I just want something "better".

I've also never downloaded a virus via p2p. Not-a-one. Maybe I'm the exception, but I find the good sites are really good at keeping crap like that off the torrent searches.

Sometimes stuff is free because people want to share.

Megs, maybe you're not getting viruses because you're running linux, and the virus is completely clueless as to what to do in that environment.

We actually aren't running Linux at the moment. Haven't been since we got back in August actually. Still haven't decided on what distro I want to install (have only decided what I don't want, and now that Red Hat is apparently coming out with a normal consumer version again, I have to wait and see!)

Since we've had Windows on I've downloaded about 200GB (give or take a few GB), and haven't had a single virus.

So, Linux isn't the reason. Wink

all you have to do to get good downloads is encrypt your P2P so China does not throttle it. To avoid viruses just download from reputable seeders. For instance I tend to get all my DVD releases from Axx0 and most of my US TV from loder and 3666... just query them on piratebay and you are all set. Never get viruses from them, the other things you want just read the comments and you never get burnt. Now if you are downloading porn and stuff without a lot of seeders and leechers, you are at risk.

Could you explain to me how a movie file could possibly carry a virus?

Thank you.
