For a low budget trip you could do Spring Airlines to Syd/Melb and get Jetstar across there. Have a look at http://tour.china-sss.com/fight/fight_asia.asp. I think Tiger has also opened in Oz. They are a low budget Singapore carrier. Or you could via Sing, KL, Bangkok or Jakarta (Bali???) on one of the main carriers. More direct and frequent flights from there so they should have some good deals.

I go to Perth twice a year and have found that Singapore Airlines offer the best connections, service and usually price between Shanghai and Perth. There are many flights a day to book with most of them having good stopovers in Singapore. I usually book through a travel agent although booking direct is usually not much more.

I paid 6600 rmb for Shanghai - HK - Perth with Dragon Air and Cathay Pacific (although they are one and the same) return going December returning January.
