for a resident permit - from what my wife told me"
before it used to be 5 years of living in china then you could get the resident permit.
now last time she went to check with the police office in her town, where we got married, they told her (that was in august this year)
it takes 5 years in china and also 5 years of marriage with a local girl or local guy depends if you are guy or girl of course.
they told my wife, i will get the resident permit next year because then we will be married 5 years. in september
the thing is that things change so fast here that by the time i qualify they may push it to 10 years ahhaahahahah
anyway if someone get fresher news i also would be interrested about it |

You could try getting a job. The company will then sort out the permit for you. |

No offence just curious. Why you guys love each other to instead of loving a woman? hmmm....maybe I am out of fashion. Do you guys have the gay/lesbian community? Whether most of your friends are gays I mean the friend cycle. Is there any gay/lesbian pubs in Shanghai? |

You could always go to Hong Kong every six months and just get a new visa there without a job - a lot of my mates in guangzhou do that... unless you are american and then you will have to go every 30 days. Just a thought... |

there's a difference between a visa, a residence permit and a resident card, fyi.
-the permit is worked based.
-there's lots of types of visas.
-resident cards or permanent residency is only done on a case by case basis and usually involves making a major committment to China (you're a CEO, you've invested $10M USD in Wuxi, etc.) |

residence permit lets you live here for one or 2 years at a time, maybe 5 if you're CEO, but it is given out after you have a work permit. Once you can prove you have a stable job in a stable company, and other rules, then they are letting you out of the constant visa renewal process, since most visas now are for 30-60-90 days and not 1 or 2 years.
if you google the subject, you can find the cn.gov websites, your embassy's website, etc., and learn a lot. you should get in the habit of doing this because the laws and policies change constantly. They were significantly updated this year, but not everyone's opinions are. The data I gave you is correct however, for now. |

I have a resident permit because my wife has a work permit. I'm retired but I didn't get a permit until the authorities saw a marriage certificate.
looks like gay couples will have a problem. Maybe both should get jobs. |

Maybe you're living in the 20th century, I wouldn't know, but last time I checked my watch it was the 21st. |

The thing about China is, discrimination is still OK.
Since you're gay, why not try and find a backdoor? |

When did this go into effect? I am American, just renewed my 2 year Z visa within past 2 months and was given another 2 year Z visa with 180 maximum day stay each visit. |

April 2007. They are issuing fewer 1 and 2 year Z visas, but it's still possible to get one. A work permit AND a residence permit ties you and your company into the overal system better so they can make sure you're paying taxes, etc. So they perfer that people get this combo. They know that some people constantly getting short term L and F visas, for example, are working under the table.
I am not sure how they distinguish between issuing a Z visa and a residence permit, since both require a work permit...

Huh? You must be confused. "Z" visas (i.e. residence permits) do not have maximum stays as you described. |
