| Post subject: leasing car with driver |
As a start, I know this issue has been addressed many times and I have also read the threads associated with this topic. So, thank you to all who read on.
After thinking about whether I should lease or buy a car, I've decided to lease a car with a driver. The driver that I'm thinking about hiring is giving me the option of choosing a car of my liking, but the monthly rate would obviously be adjusted accordingly.
After looking at several cars/vans, I'm thinking of going with either the Buick Lacrosse (never thought I would ever say this) or Honda Odyssey. My assistant is negotiating the price with the driver, but has told me to expect to pay around rmb10k/month. That would include all OT (there wouldn't be much and I also travel overseas frequently), around 15k km/year of gas, insurance, road tax, etc. I'll need to pay for parking at my office and toll fees if I travel long distance.
From what I've read, that seems to be in the ball park. What do you guys think of the deal? I'm currently leaning towards the Buick because the ride is more comfortable than the Honda. Would be interested to hear from readers who have experiences with these cars here. Also, I welcome any other suggestions for cars and/or drivers with cars.
Thanks! |

I would recommend you buy a used car instead of lease one in Shanghai. Let's do a quick comparison:
LEASE A CAR IN SHANGHAI:
a buick GL8 VAN, the market price with a driver (roughly from RMB 11,000--- 14,000) x 12 months= 132,000 RMB to 168,000.,
BUY A USED CAR:
the one that I found from shangcar's site for sale is about RMB 195,000 for a used Buick GL8 VAN with Shanghai license plate, you could find link here: http://www.shangcar.com/used_car_shanghai.htm
See, the money that you pay to rent a car for 2 years could easily buy a similar condition car.
One more thing: That said it's investment to have a shanghai license plate. Just about 1 year ago when I bought my car, it's about RMB 36,000 for the license plate.
Compare with buy a car, car rental is too expensive in Shanghai.
There's one thread discussed this topic before: http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/index.php?name=MDForum&file=viewtopic&t=6 4669&highlight= |

Thanks for the replies. Right or wrong, for various reasons stated below, I've decided to lease a car, as opposed to buying:
- I prefer my driver to drive the car home, so that it'll be more convenient for both parties if I need him to pick me up on short notice. I wouldn't feel comfortable letting my driver take my car home everyday
- Based on how I've seen people here drive and park, the car would be full of scratches and nicks in no time, and that would drive me nuts if it's my own car
- I don't want to deal with the hassle of getting rid of the car if I were to leave Shanghai after a couple of years
- I was advised by my lawyer that the owner of the car is ultimately responsible for any accidents that the car is involved in, regardless of who is driving |
