| Post subject: Song Jiang streets and Shanghai stores |
I've just started learning Chinese, so I can't use online resources where the menus are only in Chinese, even if the maps include pinyin street names, unless I have direct links to the maps I need. I can't find any map I can use of areas around Olympic park where I live in Song Jiang and where my wife works in Qing Pu. I'd also like to find some way to look up the addresses of supermarkets and department stores in Shanghai that I can get to easily.
I'll give some examples of what I need.
1. I lost my wallet and I wanted to report it to the police. I live in Olympic Garden in Song Jiang just over the railroad bridge from Qibao. I would have liked to have some way to find the address of the nearest police station and find it on a map.
2. Olympic Garden has a non-stop bus to Zhong Shan Park and another one to Xu Jia Hui. I'd like to have some way to find out what supermarkets and department stores are nearby, and their addresses. I already know where to find McDonalds, Pizza Hut and KFC, of course!
I know how to find one Carrefour store near Zhong Shan Park, and a Tescoe store in Qibao. I'm wondering if there is a Carrefour or Tescoe store, or any other supermarket, near Xu Jia Hui. I'd also like to know the locations of any Lianhua and Hualian stores, and book stores, near Zhong Shan Park and Xu Jia Hui.
Does anyone know of any Web site or any book where I can look up addresses of places like that, without being able to read any Chinese? |

Some have asked about buses. I use http://msittig.wubi.org/bus/
Also use Shanghai Daily map of Metro, which has both language. |

So I've read every thread I can find and clicked every link that exists so please don't tell me to search through old posts. I've been looking all around for anything that shows more than just the downtown area. I live south of the XinZhuang metro station and it seems that all of the maps cut out either at ChunShen road or even north of that - I even went and bought a book specifically about MinHang and it stopped in the same place - as if Minhang went only that far? I think most people probably live downtown so I can imagine that's why most maps show only that area, but I'd like to see a printed map of more than just that. Any Ideas?? |

Don’t know what you are trying to find from maps. If you want to get some where via public transportation you my want to try to call 160 and 96900 the operators will advise you to take which bus or buses to get to your destination from where you are. You may also want to try: www.ddmap.com. You may need a Chinese-speaking friend to help you that as the above sources are only in Chinese. Good Luck |

I can get around just fine, and have chinese friends that can help if I need. Public transport is not an issue - especially since it's been covered by hundreds of posts. I just would like to find a map. I am starting to think that what I am asking is impossible - when I ask all of the local people I know, I ususally get blank stares.
When I buy a map in the US, it even has roads that extend beyond the downtown area. And although I grew up in Chicago and know my way around quite well, I still have a map - it helps to visualize an area and learn different ways to get around. Thanks for trying to help. |

Scott, I was having the same problem. I live a few miles west of Qibao, just inside the Songjiang District. I've been wanting a street map of the nearby town of Jiuting, and of the whole district. Partly just because it will make me feel better. I like having maps of where I am and where I'm going. Also if I can find addresses for some places I'm looking for, then I can look them up on the map. It would also help me with figuring out where each bus is going from a bus stop.
I've been asking around for weeks, and not getting anywhere. Finally I went to a Xinhua bookstore in Qibao Ancient Town. I saw some street maps of some areas outside of Shanghai, but not for Jiuting Town or Songjiang District. I took one of them to the checkout counter and pointed to it, saying "Jiuting" and pointing to "street" and "map" in my phrase book. The girl turned to a collection of maps behind her and pulled out a street map of Songjiang which had everything I was looking for. Almost. I would have liked to have some legends and lists of places in English or at least in Pinyin, and there's no street index in any language, but it's good enough for my purposes.
You might try going to a bookstore in or near the Minhang District and asking for a street map of your town and/or Minhang.

many things to know about shanghai maps:
-there are very few street directories, if any, most places just have maps
-most bookstores have maps. if you don't like the ones on display (no English, etc.), ask for more choices, they always have drawers full of other maps.
there are 2 types of maps, those that are to scale, and those that just show the streets but the scale is sometimes very poor.
Also, many maps are very outdated or were made without the benefit of aeral photography, etc., and are only semi-accurate. |

Go to City Store they have a really good english map of Shanghai and the paper has a kind of shiny coating so when you are trekking around in the rain (happens often) it wont get wrecked... |

Kungfutea, the edushi.com map is excellent, we use it alot. It is pretty spot except for the parks on barren land. Also, it doesn't have much on the outer areas and much on Pudong yet. Otherwise, it is BRILLIANT and the best way to get a good overview of the city! Thanks for introducing it.
