| Post subject: Where do you live and what do you like / dislike about it... |
Preparing for a move here in the next couple months, curious about where other people live and what you like and dislike about the location.
If you're living somewhere and it just doesn't get better than where you are for the convenience and the money, I'd like to hear about it.
Likewise, if you're somewhere that is really getting to you in one way or another - let's hear the horror stories as well.
I think here soon I'm going to post a list of properties and people can list / rate the good and the bad for each... [need to compile the list first]. |

i kid.. .there are other things...
Likes-
Responsive management. They might try to charge me up the ass for things, but at least they will send someone out and fix the problem.
Great environment. Its on a relatively unbusy street; its clean; not too noisy.
In good condition.
Central air/ heating.
Large hot water tank.
Great appliances.
Convenient to Carrefour and adjacent stores.
Decent gym and restaurant.
Lawson in complex.
Large units.
Dislike-
Strange management rules pertaining to parking. Sometimes they let you park above ground, sometimes not.
Parking attendants don't salute when you drive by. F'ing pompous bastards.
Far from Puxi and where all the action is.
Gym is expensive; food at restaurant is so/so.
No cigs at the Lawson, but plenty of vodka.
Really, I have nothing to complain about where I live except that its in BFE. |

Hmmm, sounds like a good exercise for everyone to go thru actually.
St Johns- Zhong Shan Park area
Likes:
Nice complex with not an over abundance of excessive crap. Very practical complex.
Good management, responsive and straighforward.
Quiet complex overall in evenings despite being next to the light rail tracks.
Double Paned windows throughout complex.
Good water pressure.
Convenient in complex Pool, Tennis court, mini-gym, massage place and Lawsons, with Amway and Bank of China at the complex entrance.
100M from Metro station to Line 2,3 & 4, makes Travel to JingAn or even Pudong a snap.
less than 400 steps away from Carrefour, Yolo Electronics store, and all the dining places within CLoud Nine Mall.
Convenient wet market (newly rennovated) around the corner with both fresh meats and produce as well as hot foods.
Good security crew.
Very few instances of construction going on. And when there is, management is pretty good about managing the times etc.
Reasonable management fees.
Good mix of residents; higher end local and middle range foreigners. Families, kids, pets... mostly pretty "normal".
Dislikes:
Wish there were a Pool table in the complex as I'd use it a hell of a lot more than their crazy mini-gym.
High School on side street- on weekends that street filled with anxious parents parking on the sidewalks and stuff...but the traffic attendants are there in force though.
No lobby attendants though the buildings were clearly designed for it.
And oh yeah, too many foreigners there now, don't feel as special anymore just kidding! |

XiangMei, Pudong
Likes: Lots of green space and playgrounds
Quiet neighborhood and building
Two blocks from metro stop
Close to Century Park
Nice mix of expats and locals
Health club has free weights and heated indoor pool
Good sq ft/$
Dislikes: Not much in the way of restaurants/nightlife nearby
For some expats the distance to a large grocery store (13Y cab ride to Big Thumb Plaza) might be a problem as well as management not posting announcements in English. |

I have a Lane house just off Hengshan Rd. I love it. Close to Metro, great shopping, movies, parks. For me it the best place in Shanghai to live.
I lived in a really great service apt, that was part of a 5 star hotel, also on Hengshan Rd. I love my old house, with all the sweakes and drafts. |

Zhabei side of Suzhou Creek.
Nice, quiet garden area in back; view of creek; on-site convenience store; convenient -- close to Han Zhong Lu station & long distance bus stations, ~10-15 min walk to train station and 7-to-7 post office open 7 days a week; banks nearby (ICBC, BOC, CCB); phone shops nearby; not too far from Nan Bei Gao Jia; not far from downtown Puxi; neighbourhood gentrifying (i.e. value of purchased apt rising), but still some shop houses & sidewalk markets nearby; few expats (may not be a plus for you, but expats tend to drive prices up wherever they congregate).
Dislikes: Carrefour, B&Q, etc. at least 20 min drive away; mgmt announcements only in 汉语 ; health club & indoor pool not "free"; bus terminal area crowded with taxis when buses come in (really congested during the 3 big holidays). |

LG - I'm looking at places in JingAn, I think one at Rui Li... can you tell me a little more about the area ? Also, is the name of the building Rui Li ? I've got a list of agents and an even bigger list of places to view - trying to keep them all straight is a nightmare.
Thx. |

After living on one of the most FABULOUS streets in the French concession for 3 years (Hunan Lu), I moved about a year ago to the Suzhou creek area by the train station into a HUGE ungainly compound called Brillinat City in English and I LOVE it!!!!!
Pros:
1. Many subway lines and stations right there (line 1 - Shanghai Railway Station, Line 3/4 - Zhongtan Lu and Zhenping Lu, Line 7 when it is finished - Zhenping Lu)
2. Many places to eat right there and many more not far away.
3. Great grocery store in compound.
4. Great views of from many apartments as most border the creek. Also, many have views of Oriental Pearl Butt-plug, etc. and/or XJH Grand Gateway, etc.
5. Underground parking
Cons:
1. Compound is really really really HUGE.
2. If you don't speak any Chinese you may have issues with your day to day. This isn't a foreigner neighborhood. It is kind of like Zhong Shan Park used to be around 3-4 years ago.
3. You are not in the French Concession with all of the other whities (Frankly-I don't see this as a con any more. But, if you are new to Shanghai, you may have issues with this.)
Good luck!!!! |

Lucar -- Seems we live in the same general area -- Suzhou creek.
Definitely agree with what you said.
Especially like the part that just because it isn't a foreigner neighborhood isn't a "con" any more.
In the US they say, "All those furriners should learn to speak English."
Yet, here in China, they try to find places where people speak English?
Hmmmm.
Love the avatar. |

[ah ah so true. Was at the gym stretching when the coach asked one of them, slowly and articulating for the second time: "it's cold outside?". Still, he didnt get it... "tingbudong"... maybe he should ask his Chinese girlfriend (I remember seeing them together for at least 1 year) to be more than just a piece of meat.] |

Oh yeah its called "Rui Li Gong Yu" in Chinese. "Gong Yu" is "apartment" in Chinese btw. And its a small compound with a kinda wide green building in it. There is a nice basement where you can park bikes and motobikes and cars.
About this area, I would say its quite nice both for people who like to dine out a lot and people who like to cook themselves. Cuz I have mentioned that there are quite a few local restaurauts around and a wet market is very close. Actually right next to the wet market there is another compound which is called "Han Lin Garden" that looks quite nice too. I havent looked their apartments myself since its slight more expensive than Rui Li.
Oh I did mentoin there is Bank of China opposite the street, as well as Motel 168. On the other side of Wu Ning Road, there is a big public swimming pool. (I am thinking of buying the membership there cuz I want to learn how to swim..yeah loser me)
As you know Rui Li is on the intersection of Wu Ding Lu and Wu Ning Lu. Wu Ning lu leads to Carrefour if you keep walking towards the North, and its a busy wide street that could be loud sometimes. Along the 2 sides of this street, there are plenty of trees and a small park where I like to walk my dogs. There is also a gym named Star or something like that nearby.
2 blocks away there is Yu Yao road where the "new factory" is. There are Elite bar, coffeebean and moon river diner and so on. I have only been to a few of these so dont know much about this.
If you want to stay close to the subway its about 10 mins walk. Traffic can be bad sometimes if you use car or taxi a lot. But you know, this is Shanghai.
Rui Li is still very new and all the facilities are in very good situation. Just make sure you wont choose the apt facing Wu Ning Nan Road as it can be very loud.
If you want to look around more, you can check out "Jia Yuan" which is on Wan Hang Du road. Its about 5 mins walk to "Rui Li" and the compound is much bigger. Somehow its closer to the subway station "Jiang Shu Road" stop and there is Hymall within walking distance. I would say the rooms are ok cuz I looked about 2 apts before. Not great but ok.
Well thats all I can think of now.
Choose Rui Li and I can be your lovely but annoying neighbor. |

Shanghai Center (Jing An District)
Like -- conveniant location, many restaurants, walking distant to everywhere Great gym, could sunbath naked and no body look or care. Starbucks right below.
Dislike- Too many damn cars stop by in the morning to pick up their boss. Too expensive for what you get. |

When I was renovating my new apartment I lived accross from Rui Li. I loved the neighb, but the distance from the subway and the taxi competition was a pain. I loved all of the available food shopping and places to get my hair washed though. Also, when subway 7 goes in, it will run right down Changshou lu, so public transit will get much easier. |
