Silver lining in this cloud would be posting those things that you would like to see changed on the site. This thread is about as good as any to create a master list. I'm sure Michael and the rest of the wizards will have no problem looking at all the suggestions and making intelligent decisions for perpetuation and improvement of the site.
If you are going to complain, please offer a solution to your issue. Those things within the control of the m0ds and admins will be considered - those things that are not are inevitabilities of forums no matter where you go.
If you see something from another site you'd like implemented here, please post a link and a description or PM it to someone here. |

FYI, while I do miss Magnolia and her positive influence on this board, I still think this place(?) is a great forum and great tool even though there are a few tools(!) on the board they we might be better off without. |

http://www.sportbikes.net/forums/index.php
This board has a link just above the Forum section called: Today's Posts
I'd like to see something like that at the top of the Forum instead of over in Home where it is now (only ques one section of the site currently if I'm not wrong).
Edit: something else I saw on the SBN site were pretty neat emoticons and some neat structure to their ranking system, points, money, awards, etc. Just more food for thought - especially the emoticons they've got, those would come in really handy here. |

I think people need to lighten up a little. Yes there are plenty of nonsensical posts, but I just see that as ridiculously bored people at work making an attempt at humour to cling onto some semblance of sanity. The stupid questions, well, it's probably likely that just as many (if not the majority of) people have success using the search function and therefore don't feel the need to post, the rest are the ones you do see. |

Fix the "reply-to" quoting on PM's. Works fine for posts but [quote="the devilhimself"] screws up in messages. I know, a small thing, but it's ugly. |

Why the hell are you posting this in the "Open Chat" section where you obviously don't have to post anything relevant to Shanghai if you don't want to.
There are other threads you can cruise around for better info on Shanghai. Or your beloved debates, if you want one so much, then why don't you start one you lazy tard?
You're just a complainer... go whine to your mummy. If there's one thing the board doesn't need is idiots that complain and sit on their as$ all day. |

Other forum software already has this ... actually, this MDForum thing isn't so great. phpBB is better, has more useful features and is no more bloated or resource-intensive than this thing.

Then keep Arseny and rewrite the TOS.
I don't care what they do.
The point is, either have a standard and stick to it, or be a complete joke.
Right now they are a complete joke, as demonstrated by the fact that the following sentence is banned: "I weighed up my options as I surveyed the treacherous slope. There was nothing for it. With a band of heathen cannibals tracking me through the jungle, furious that I had married the most beautiful of their princesses in a tastefully understated Church of England ceremony, it was time to show that slope who was master!". |

Actually... MDForum IS phpBB2 re written so that it works with our site software so it picks up the same design and the allow users not to have to login twice - once for the site and once for the forum. The ignore user and report to moderetor button we are looking at.. but they are not standard features on phpBB.. these were modifications written by other people ( there are dozens and some require altering a lot code to make it work) . Anyhow, these are good suggestions.. will see what we can do. |

Jeez. I can't believe people are complaining! This is the one place where I can come and flirt shamelessly with HC without repercussions. |

| Post subject: Re: What happened to the Shanghai Expat forum? |
| shanghaithunder wrote: |
I used to find the inquiries, answers and topics very provocative and insightful. I looked forward to seeing some useful information.
But recently it has all gone downhill. Some users ask downright stupid questions without using available resouces beforehand. Some answer sacastically or without the slightest inclination (maybe just want to see their own posting).
Perhaps all the bright and intellectual expatriates have recycled and gone home or perhaps the ShanghaiEXpat management are neglecting their duties. Just tired of the mindless garbage that people have on their empty minds.
Nevertheless, I am steering clear of ShanghaiExpat in the future. This phenomena or lack thereof has been occuring for the past several months.
Time for another option or just keep from staring at the monitor from now on. |
I can't entirely agree.
In fact, most of the friends and knowledge I've gained since arriving in Shanghai almost three years ago have been gained from ShanghaiExpat, something I'm very grateful for. [Thanks to SHEX crew!]
Sure, forums such as this do attract inane posts by equally inane posters [Including myself at times], but isn't this what the Open Forum is all about?
When I'm seeking specific information [or giving answers], I check out the relevant forum. Usually, it proves helpful.
At other times, when I'm feeling irrelevant and just want to pass time, I'm in the Open Forum. Sure moderation is not always perfect, but no complaints here. It really doesn't bother me. Mostly, the Open Forum is a useful way to keep in touch with other posters whom I know in real life.
The diversity of the expat community tends to be reflected here. We can't always expect everyone to be "bright and intellectual". However, contrary to popular opinion, I consider most to be intelligent, friendly and great fun to be with. |

phpBB is up to 3.something and MdForum is up to 2.07 while you are at 2.01. It only matters because of security concerns but there ya have it ... remember a couple months ago ? You really have to stay on top of these things or risk some nasty consequences.
On a related note, a WAP version could be nice for searching some stuff. Sometimes I am outside and would like to check on something with the phone - usually a restaurant address. This site is almost useless on a phone. Don't know if that's applicable to the forum but Looking For and Foods in WAP form might be really useful. |

^ Maybe Mike doesn't want to do that because of that Guangxi number.
There might be no point in having a wap version. |

It's been up to 2.0.7 since September. No security fixes == vulnerable. You weren't around when shexxy was hacked, eh ? Was funny but could have been embarrassing for some people

Yeah, maybe just me. But lots of times I'm outside and would like to find a restaurant, know I've seen something about it here but can't wait the three hours it takes to load on my phone. Maybe I'll have to do something like that on my own ... |
