There must have been. . . surely. I mean obviously far fewer, but they must still have existed. |

There were English teachers, but there were not any English, English teachers. |

I was teaching English at Fudan in 1990. Most of us were Americans fresh out of college but there was one Brit. Fudan had stopped hiring Australians that year because they had a reputation for getting drunk and bringing home Chinese girls. (We had to live in the Foreign Experts Building and they kept a very close watch on us.)
My current students were very impressed when I said I'd taught at Fudan. What they don't know (and I didn't tell them) was that back then all you needed was a college degree and a willingness to live in China. |

Remember how no one had keys to their own room, at least in hotels ? Every floor had a girl who'd unlock your door to let you in ? and the hot water only worked during certain hours, if it worked at all ? Ick. There have been some improvements, for sure ! |

No keys and a grumpy old man at the (locked) gate who'd pretend not to hear you if you came in after 9:30. I miss the camaraderie of those days. I don't miss queuing up for buses with the little old ladies. They had the sharpest elbows and knew just where to poke you in the back for maximum pain. Maybe we need an "Old China Hand" thread so we don't bore the youngsters with our tales of the "good old days." |
