agreed it
depends on your life style, rent of your apartment, where your eat (i mean you cook by yourself or have dinner outside), if you live only by yourself, i think eat outside will be ok,because cook by yourself and eat outside will be the same cost. |

Since happiness or misery is more an attitude than a commodity, if you have to ask the question chances are that you are not happy now and that no amount of money or perks will make you happy long term in Shanghai either. |

What a crock of hot air. Are you trying for the blowhard of the month award or something ?
If it costs, say, five thousand a month for two people to have an apartment, eat reasonably well, pay the electric and internet and water fees, go out a couple times a week and see a movie, then a salary less than that will induce unhappiness. More than that should be enough to be content. Nobody is happy when they can't pay their bills. Many people are happy when they have enough plus a little for emergencies.
Happiness is not an attitude when you don't have enough to eat and need to hide from the landlord. |

Hi again to you all! Ok, seems difficult here to understand the true, I mean, some of you guys or girls, wrote with 60.000$ a year plus 1000$ extra paid for the apartment can be very enough for live in Shanghai without any problems, some of you wrote this money are maybe just enough for have a life...
Maybe the true is in the middle like the said?? ) I wanna be more clear and I really need your help about that, I'm a happy in love married man, my wife she's not just wonderful person and woman but also very understanding and supporting in my work and life, like I said I received a job offer for come to work in Shanghai, 5000$ tax free a month and 1000$ a month house allowance, we wait for a baby, thats mean we will need for sure hospital assistance in Shanghai for my wife, like gynecologic doctor and assistance for born our little girl in a local Chinese Clinic and I think private one right? (she 's a girl oh yeah I can't wait to see her:))), we love to have good time but of course because my eife she's 5 months we will not go in disco right...... or some smoking pub or bar at the moment we don't feel like can be a great idea for our little babe:)), so we plain to have a good life, nice European standard apartment, sat tv, secure 24/24 7/7, close to supermarkets, restaurants, cinemas, downtown I think, we will cooking at home and sometime eating out for have nice romantic dinner, watch movies, go to gym, etc etc.
I read some of you say with 5.000 to 8.000 RMB a month is possible to find some normal nice place to live in Shanghai, some said... 20.000 RMB, ok we wanna have a nice apartment not far from metro' and the center, new inside and quite comfortable, so how much I have to put for have something like we want like monthly rent? )) Plus are 35.000 RMB really enough for have a good life for me and my wife in Shanghai??? For care later at my little girl also? )) I need to decide what to do, because I really care at my family future and healthy I will really love to understand can be possible for Us to come and be ok without any problems about money...
Thanks again in advance to you all:))

For a decent European or American standard apartment, near the metro, downtown, close to shopping, etc...
2-3 Bedroom....Figure 10,000-20,000 per month. Yes there is that much variance in prices. Depends greatly on the location, and the landlord. Most apartments here are individually owned, so the lanlords current financial situation really plays into this a lot.
For more help...I would PM Adrienne on this site...
She has been an agent here for many years, and is extremely knowledgeable and helpful.
Good Luck! |

That's one of the problems with being an expat - people lose (did I spell that right, leidelaohu? ) touch with reality. I am not very familiar with the situation in the US, but I don't know that many regular people in Australia who have an equivalent of US$5000 left after paying tax and housing (I am not talking about people from Rose Bay etc). |
RTFM.
Gross. $72k GROSS. It comes out to about $4500 a month NET assuming only tax liability in China and with stiffing the US government for FICA contributions and, if any, state & local income taxes.
While this may sound like waking up in heaven for English teachers, pig farmers and slum dwellers, for those with a realistic retirement plans (IRAs, 401(k), savings, investments), mortgage and / or upkeep on your home in the US, medical insurance, property taxes ... ad infinitum ... it's practically minimum wage.
If, on the other hand, you are single, evade taxation in the US, live in China sharing expenses with an a$$ bandit and have no economic contingency plans, $4500 is great and you can go out, get drunk and laid (I'd avoid Gazzoo, she's got STDs ) and still have money left over. Not enough to raise your family, mind you, but then ... |
The OP hasn't specified their nationality, just because they will be paid in USD, or the equivalent in local currency, doesn't make them a US citizen.
It's news to most Americans, but most people in the world don't have things such as IRA's and 401K's. Such plans are useless now anyhow and I'm sure have lost so much of their value.
My wife and I once lived on US$230/m in Cambodia, now I'm fortunate enough to live on much more. I still managed to save at every income level and enjoy my life! I'm from a western country too!
More than half the world lives on US$2/day, put that in perspective for one moment, and be happy that an income like the one stated puts you in the top 5% of income earners. |

This place is getting over-run with retards. Ten or fifteen years ago living in China was an experience. There were good aspects to counter the bad ones. Maybe even six or seven years ago.
But today, living here is shit. If you have to survive like an Ozarks hillbilly then why the flock would you want to come here to live on $2 a day ? I'm beginning to see why Under has such a negative attitude towards english teachers. |

I received a offer of 35000 RMB a month (the want me to pay the tax but I will never do that... anyway will still speak...about it) plus 6000 RMB a part for the apartment expensive, first how much are the tax incidence for a salary like this?? Do anyone now how much a foreign pay of tax to the total month or year income??? Second, in case will be 35.000 tax free like I try to get, are this money enough for live in Shanghai with my wife... a normal good life?? is like 60.000$ at the current exchange rate!
Last, my wife she is pregnant 5 months, she's the kind of woman not scared to change country even now!! She actually like the idea to go to some new place, even when I'm little bi worried about it... But I wanna know which private medical insurance can be the best for her, how much are the cost of private clinic and how much can cost to born a child in a Shanghai Clinic, doesn't anyone have a clue?? I will appreciate any helpful information or suggestion from you people!!!
Thanks in advance.

Are you and family insured? If so even if you have to pay for the baby's delivery at a private hospital which will cost a bit of money but it's a one-off cost, the on-going medical care (for sickness) is covered. You will be fine on that amount until the child starts going to kindergarten. |

If ur having a kid make sure you have insurance.. We are checking rates at the moment at they are about 80.000-115.000 RMB incl prenatal package..
Wifes having small surgery in Jan 2009 RMB 130.000..
Having a kid is expensive in Shanghai if you want him / her in an international school. Make sure its covered by the company.. Our daughter attends a British Int School in Minhang and price is around 200.000 RMB per year
You might wanna consider getting paid fixed RMB salary instead of USD.. |

When i lived with 10k a month, i was happy, and i used to say, if i earn more, ill save it, i don't need more money..
Now i earn 20k a month, and i still cant save a dime..,
I'm 26, and i have no responsibilities, but last month i went to the dentist, and i spent 7000 rmb for an endodoncy treatment.,
This kind of things, can take a lot of money in Shanghai, so be careful, specially with a child.. |

im a university student from england working here for a mere 2,500 rmb a month 1,600 of which goes on rent, leaving me 900 rmb a month to go out, eat, travel etc. i have taken huge chunks out of my bank account but i know i can easily survive off this wage and more importantly be happy with what i am getting, i've been here for a few months and it's been one of the happiest times of my life, sure i wish i was earning more money and it would certainly help with going out etc. but right now i dont care its all about the experience, i have my whole life to save money, the way i see it i am living my life with no regrets and nothing holding me back especially financial issues, i make do with what i have and it may not be as glamarous as many of the other expats in china but im more than happy and that is enough for me right now |
