And sorry to add to the post but seriously I have been used to the champagne lifestyle here in Shanghai and if you cant be happy on US$5K you may as well just shoot yourself now. |

That's one of the problems with being an expat - people lose (did I spell that right, leidelaohu?  ) touch with reality. I am not very familiar with the situation in the US, but I don't know that many regular people in Australia who have an equivalent of US$5000 left after paying tax and housing (I am not talking about people from Rose Bay etc). |

Gross. $72k GROSS. It comes out to about $4500 a month NET assuming only tax liability in China and with stiffing the US government for FICA contributions and, if any, state & local income taxes.
While this may sound like waking up in heaven for English teachers, pig farmers and slum dwellers, for those with a realistic retirement plans (IRAs, 401(k), savings, investments), mortgage and / or upkeep on your home in the US, medical insurance, property taxes ... ad infinitum ... it's practically minimum wage.
If, on the other hand, you are single, evade taxation in the US, live in China sharing expenses with an a$$ bandit and have no economic contingency plans, $4500 is great and you can go out, get drunk and laid (I'd avoid Gazzoo, she's got STDs ) and still have money left over. Not enough to raise your family, mind you, but then ... |

It's funny to see everybody's views... Obviously the amount of money one needs really depends on age/lifestyle/expectations...
I have just moved here, and am living on 4000rmb/month.. i have back up savings, but with luck and this crazy idea of cooking food at home during the week i plan to keep most of my savings and travel to europe at the end of the year. It's true, i'm not thinking long term, of retirement plans or mortgages, but I am young, and here for the cultural experience and to learn mandarin! Bring on the street food and cooking at home during the week, then i can afford to play up on weekends... |

I have the full respect to most of the posters in this forum including hammer, you and even under as obviously you have great things to offer always to other readers. What i dont understand in this instance is that i find Gazza has expressed his/ her own experience and so do I, but we have been picked up by our great comrade under and others by labelling us as moron or liar or anything that is insultive. We have the relevant articles or rules pasted/ calling to the relevant authorties/ bank for verification ONLY like to proof that there is such a RIDICULOUS rule existing in China. Then we have a lot of comments telling us all these are VERY likely false info given by them (and bear in mind that we experience the rejection in the recent months) and all you need to do is to pick up the phone speaking with the customer representative and throw all your doubts and enquiries to them, amazingly it seems to me that nobody has done this besides under.
This rule was starting from april of 2007 which i stated in the previous post and your experience before the date might not even be counted, and it was you American started throwing the punches to Gazza by labelling her as bitch or whatever negative without knowing the real answer YET. Who would not fight back being pushed by under to that far?
Thanks Yu, i understand you try to leave me a space or smooth thing over but i take my words as a man. I back Gazza for what he has done so far. |

Yu... I have only been here for a few weeks and you seem to be a nice guy. I started off trying to be nice to everyone as a noob. However ,in multiple threads I came across our good friend Under, who's usual tactic I found out was to insult, abuse and bully people when he disagreed with them. And in true bully fashion, the people he focuses mostly on are the little timid guys. When proven wrong or a liar, the intensity of his insults become more and more.
Anyway, one day he picked on me. The first time I let it slide... the second time I attacked back. In three seperate threads I proved he was wrong. Instead of trying to disprove me wrong, he just increased his insults (a common troll tactic.) The thing he didn't seem to understand was that Australians are famous for taking the piss out of themselves so any insults bounce off like bullets and actually work for us.
I am truly sorry if you feel that I was ruining your forum... However I offer no apologies for taking Under down a peg. Pricks like him need to be humilated every now and then to show them that are also fair game. |

its fine if you keep it isolated to the thread in which it starts, or just report it. but to continue the conflicts and generate the complaints the moderators and me personally, are getting, it would be easier to remove posting privileges if this keeps going.
Yinlin, your post here was random sounding though I get your point. Again, limit it to where it belongs or the moderators will do their job. I think most of the mods prefer not to as they need to sign out of their usual ID and moderate by logging into their moderator accounts. So save them the hassle and moderate yourselves please.
And yes, UnderHO can be a jackass at times. responding in kind only brings you there too. Two wrongs do not make a right, just a reminder of our childhood days. Believe me you don't want to see my ******* side. |

it's funny how some people come to china wishing to live like a king here. why wouldn't you live happily with $70K income? did you live happily with that sort of income at home? there are so many people earn less than that where you come from, i am so sure.

Hi to everyone here, I'm new of the forum and I will like to have you people help me to understand better how can be the life in Shanghai.
I received a offer of 35000 RMB a month (the want me to pay the tax but I will never do that... anyway will still speak...about it) plus 6000 RMB a part for the apartment expensive, first how much are the tax incidence for a salary like this?? Do anyone now how much a foreign pay of tax to the total month or year income??? Second, in case will be 35.000 tax free like I try to get, are this money enough for live in Shanghai with my wife... a normal good life?? is like 60.000$ at the current exchange rate!
Last, my wife she is pregnant 5 months, she's the kind of woman not scared to change country even now!! She actually like the idea to go to some new place, even when I'm little bi worried about it... But I wanna know which private medical insurance can be the best for her, how much are the cost of private clinic and how much can cost to born a child in a Shanghai Clinic, doesn't anyone have a clue?? I will appreciate any helpful information or suggestion from you people!!!

Max, depends where you're going to live: a 3-bdrms apartment can cost you well above 20,000rmb/mo to rent in most prime areas. Private medical coverage for the entire family will cost you probably another 2,500-3,000rmb/mo. |

Shanghai is an expensive city. For sure it's the most expensive city in China... You need to decide where you want to live and go from there...You can spend anywhere from $600 USD's to $6000 USD's a month....I think $60,000 a year in Shangahi will not allow you a very high standard of living....Good Luck |
