| Post subject: No More Plastic Bags! |
>The State Council, China’s cabinet, banned the production of thin plastic bags and will forbid China’s supermarkets to offer them free beginning June 1, saying they cause pollution and waste resources. The council said shoppers should return to using cloth bags. The Chinese use up to three billion plastic bags a day and the country has to refine 37 million barrels of crude oil every year to make plastics used for packaging, according to a report on the Web site of China Trade News.<
It's great to see China getting ahead of the game! |

Brilliant stuff. . . seriously.
I hate plastic bags.
Of course Taiwan started phasing them out some time ago. |

I wish they'd do this in the States. I bring my own bags when I can but because it's not the norm the checkout kids always look annoyed. And, they pack your groceries like they're getting paid by the bag! |

Supermarkets in New Zealand only introduced it a few months back and it's voluntary rather than required. You buy reusable bright green bags from the supermarket for a dollar.
The weird thing is that I see people carrying the green 'eco-bags' everywhere except the bloody supermarket! Seems like it's the new fashion statement. You have to wonder about people sometimes.
It's crazy though. New Zealand loves to tout itself as this environmentally friendly country, yet they get outdone by the 'big polluting' Asian countries in terms of basic environmental initiatives.
Years back Taiwan started making people pay for plastic bags at the supermarket.
And back when I was a kid everybody seemed to be fine using paper bags. If we have to have disposable bags then why can't we go back to that? At least paper is renewable and biodegradable. |

So if people migrate to paper (as most likely would be the case in the U.S.) wouldn't the argument then be: save the trees ? |

Well if the trees are plantation trees then saving them sounds really dumb.
Honestly, people would be better served if they forgot about reducing paper use and put the energy instead into eliminating plastics wherever possible.
Bring back glass milk and soda bottles too.
It is insane that these sensible things have disappeared during the last couple of decades, stuffing the environment with plastics that will hang around for god knows how long for the sake of saving a few cents.
The other thing is that (so far as I know anyway) when you 'recycle' plastic it isn't exactly being recycled. That is, a plastic milk carton cannot be recycled into another plastic milk carton. The temperatures involved in the recycling aren't high enough to make recycled plastic hygienic, so plastics used for foods and beverages get recycled into other types of products. |

I love liquids served from glass (bottle) - beer, etc. Seems like it has a 'cleaner' taste to it. |

as with so many things about the environment, its not always clear-cut. I heard it takes four-6 times the energy consumption to make paper instead of plastic bags. also 1 kilo of cheap plastic balls can make million plus bags apparently |

^ Yeah, I was motioning in that general direction... depends on the product life cycle source, usage, disposal, etc.
All hinges on how you treat the material(s). |

I think you're right. Also, the chemicals used in making paper are not so healthful either. We went thru this "No plastic bags !" stuff in Californee and it turned out that plastic bags are more environmentally friendly than the paper ones. Of course, here is China where no one looks any deeper than the surface.
Speaking of paper, some interesting remarks about trees in Mother Jones - article is somewhat sensationalist but makes several good points :

Some parts had me giggling, the characterizations were so accurate ... |

Didn't they ban those expanded polystyrene food containers some year ago....still see them around.
A good move if it works, but my next door neighbour will have to lay in a stock if she still wants to use them as rain hats.... |

long term, re-usable cloth/hemp bags is the way to save energy and not put plastics into landfill. Most consumers are so used to getting free paper or plastic bags they balk at having to pay for a grocery bag, plus there's the inconvenience of having to carry your grocery bags to work if you go shopping after work and walk or take public transportation. |

Good points!
1. I will not pay for a bag.
2. I will not carry a freaking bag around with me 7/24 on the off chance that I need to stop and buy something. |

Finally some of the western countries can look up to China's government's rules for once. |

^ Right, it IS about the complete product life usage, not just what goes into manufacturing or first time use.....
Whenever I ride the trains here I always notice how someone dropped a Trash-Bomb on the countrysides. Disgusting if you ask me, and what is even worse are the barrier walls that try to hide it. |

Yeah right ...
| Quote: |
Through a lifecycle energy analysis, plastic is the better bag. At current recycling rates two plastic bags use less energy and produce less solid, atmospheric, and waterborne waste than a single paper bag. Moreover future improvements only increase preference in plastic bags. Increasing recycling rates and reducing the 2-to-1 ratio through proper bagging techniques would further the energy preference for plastic bags.

leidalaohu, Sometimes when I'm really bored and looking for a puzzle to do. I try to think of what someone might post that you wouldn't disagree with. Even if plastic is better than paper - less plastic is better than more plastic.
I had one of these back home (http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?CATID=255&PRODID=7 4340 (sorry I don't know how to post pictures) It's the size of a key chain and very convenient - and could probably be used as a rain hat in a pinch . Has anyone seen something like this for sale in Shanghai? |
