| Post subject: Entry-level engineering-related jobs in Shanghai? |
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to get entry-level engineering or engineering-related jobs for Western companies in Shanghai, preferably earning something resembling a Western salary. I have finished my MS in mechanical engineering but have no work experience. I know there are lots of positions available for experienced engineers but I haven't come across anything for new graduates.
Also, would it be easiest to look for jobs like this in Shanghai or should I try to find a company back in America that would transfer me there? And where is the best place to look online for these kinds of jobs?
And, how much does Mandarin language ability affect my chances of getting a job in China? I have 1.5 years of university study of Mandarin under my belt so I know the basics - would I be better off doing an intensive Mandarin course and getting semi-fluent before looking for a job? (One of my main reasons for wanting to work in China is to get good at Mandarin anyway.)
Thanks for any advice! |

There a huge amount of competition here for entry level jobs. Foreign firms want experience. Many foreign firms pay local salaries for people that get the job here. It is doubtful a foreign firm would send someone with no experience to China, especially given the higher cost, and the need for experienced people here. Speaking Mandarin is a big plus however.
Get a job in your home country with a firm that does international business, prove yourself, become capable of both doing and managing, then talk about coming to China. |
