I'm trying to track down a KTV place called "Number 9". It's supposedly expensive but very good. Anyone heard of it?

Yes, it's on Dong Hu lu. 50-100m from Huai Hai lu intersection. Located on the 2nd fl, there's a convenience store beside its ground floor.

Number Nine is nothing like the Paradise Club. Something is wrong if you think Paradise Club it is like other KTV places . How many people were you with . Did you have your own private room.....Paradise is very upscale... Maybe we are talking apples to oranges..... I always go to Paradise Club with Local people, I am always the only Foreigner there. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Well this is what I experienced:
- Prices were average.
- Decor was tacky and gaudy (which is average)
- Our room stunk because we were in the vicinty of the toilet.
- Girls were ugly to average. Not one girl stood out. (we went between 7.30 to 8 because the usher downstairs said that was when all the pretty girls come.)
- Food was crap (they actually had very little choice compared to some.)
- Karaoke listings were small (same as most places)
- It was the first time I have had to tip the usher 100rmb for bringing us into the room (that's ALL he did.)
- Average service (the mamasan visted our room for like 15 mins total)

So all in all.... I was extremely disappointed with Paradise, especially since everyone talks about it.

yup, that should cut the rating by half!

How did it happen, like the guy gave you some kind of gesture? I mean you could just ignored him.

maybe you looked junior for them. did you cheap out? try to be more generous next time around.

Right from the get go we asked the usher all the prices. He said we had to pay:

- 1000 for the room.
- 200 for the waitress
- 300 for the girls
- 300 for the mamasan
- and 100 for me (the usher)

And concerning your comment about the mamasan, shouldn't she give the good service first and then we give the tip... or do some people tip right from the bat?

very strange. I have never had an usher or a Mamasan and the woman are beautiful.I always go with professional Chinese men. Maybe they treat foreigners different....

I'm just messing w/ ya Gazza Razz. Actually a total visit of 15-20mins by the mamasan is normal, not exceptionally good but still acceptable. And why would you want the mamasan to come in often? I wouldn't want the mamasan to keep checking on us while we're having fun with the girls!

True, I hate it when the Mamasan comes in and drinks half of your alcohol, however.... there have been a few times I can remember when the she came in and saw all the girls looking shy and refusing to drink. After a few harsh words from the Mamasan (I think they were harsh) the girls suddenly went into party mode. That's what the mamasans are for.

So a girl is the same price as a bottle of whiskey? I guess that explains why you don't just pick up a few girls and treat them to drinks and karaoke. This is so much more than I wanted to know about how men use their expense accounts. Fascinating, though.

Lady Bergie. there is nothing in the States like this... Most of these places are full of Chinese men. They love it. They play drinking games and some sing ;some tell jokes. Everyone is laughing and when the night is over. They go home to their wives. The women are all very nice and most of them love to sing.
My partner told me he went to The Paradise Club every night for two years. It is how he relaxes before he goes home. He also goes to a Sauna three times a week during the day. He takes a sauna, gets a foot massage has some tea and watermelon and relaxes in a very large overstuffed chair before he goes o The Paradise Club to relax.... I think being a sucessful businessman in China today is a good thing. I think being married to a sucessful businessman in China may not be as good... Not sure. all these guys are married . I have gone to dinner with their families and then gone to KTV with the husband after dinner.

These places are in every city and village in China. They were not built for Foreigners

KTVs are going strong in Asian communities in large U.S. cities. Just not very visible and much more expensive than China. They're not easy to find or patronize unless you're wired in to that particular ethnic community. But they are there and thriving. Little to no English is spoken. A lot of the girls are just "off the boat" from Korea, China, Vietnam, etc. Once you're in you might as well be in Asia (except the tab). I've been to many of them and never seen another white face.

Just wish I did not fall in love, cause now I have a serious romance issue and cannot wait to go to Nanjing to see this girl again. Any advice on this one?

...Hi, as a newbie to this forum and a newbie to China KTV. I got the same experience as yours.
I travelled China quite often and seen these KTVs long time already, but just recently tried with my Shanghainese colleages.
Subsequent to our KTV nightout, I had several email/sms exchanges with the KTV girl and had gone out for dinner and spent my last 3 consecutive days and nights in China with this girl in my hotel (free). To my surpise also, she pays for my taxi/subway/bus and some of our restaurant bills when we are together.
Before I left China, she invited me to go to her home town in Anhui to spend lunar new year (2009) there. With this kind of treatment I receive, I think I fell with this girl (24 yo) and will try to go back to Shanghai for no business reason at all in Jan'09.
I call her every night, even I know that she works in night hours at KTV, she always says she misses me (even shes sitting beside her customer)....
As you said, how I wish I did not fall in love, because I am in same situation as yours now.Sad
Cheers!
Ey, any update from you and your romance with that "girl", its already Oct'08
