Post subject: British Airways 777 Beijing to Heathrow "crashes"

Do you think it was the extra luggage that Chinese people on the plane were carrying with them ? Cool

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/01/17/heathrow.incident/index.htm l

LONDON, England (CNN) -- An emergency operation is under way at London's Heathrow Airport after an inbound passenger jet crashlanded short of the runway on Thursday.

British Airways confirmed its flight BA38 from Beijing, China, was involved in the incident. Images showed the Boeing 777 grounded on tarmac several hundred meters short of the airport's south runway, close to a perimeter road, with its emergency chutes deployed.

The undercarriage and right engine of the aircraft appeared severely damaged, as if it had slid across the ground.

Tire tracks hundreds of meters long could be seen in the grass behind the plane, which was surrounded by fire engines and other emergency vehicles and appeared to have been doused in fire-fighting foam.

A spokesman for Heathrow -- the world's busiest airport -- said the flight had carried out an emergency landing at 12.42pm GMT.

In a statement, British Airways said all 136 passengers had been evacuated from the plane with three minor injuries.

Airport authorities said Heathrow's southern runway had been closed, but the northern runway remained open. But the incident immediately led to major delays for passengers.

A spokesman for London's Metropolitan Police said there was nothing to suggest the incident was terror-related.

The Boeing 777 is the mainstay of many airlines' long-haul fleets and has never been involved in a fatal accident. However, the aircraft involved in Thursday's incident appeared to have had a fortunate escape, having flown over heavily-populated west London suburbs before its crash landing.

"This is the closest we've come to a major catastrophe," CNN's Richard Quest said.

The incident occured as British Prime Minister Gordon Brown was due to leave Heathrow for a visit to China and India. His flight was delayed but his jet was not directly involved, PA said.

British Airways has set up a helpline number in the UK for friends and relatives concerned for passengers involved in the incident: 0800 3894193.

Propaganda to keep the population scared i bet.

That link would not load for me for some reason, from the British press with photos.

I hate that wanker with a passion.

Good to see no major injuries anyway

Seen the live pictures and footage from Sky News this morning, rumours amongst the pilots the power went on the aircraft before landing. Result the pilots had to glide it in, very lucky all of them.

I think what happened was the hostess was an ex Kedi staff member, saw that the weather was above 5 degrees celsius just before landing in London, so switched all the power/fridges/etc.... off.

i also think that the injuries that occured where people already getting up from their seats to grab their luggage from the overhead bins....

If that's true the pilot was lucky / smart to dump it in soft grass / mud.... asphalt would have produced an entirely different ending to this story.

^ Indeed he almost hit the rooftops of some houses on the way in and skimmed the perimeter fence, but glide a plane in of that magnitude and size must be a huge feat.

So reading this morning, it seems the focus of the investigation is that the fuel might have been contaminated.

fake kerosine anyone?

great...contaminated jet fuel...just what we need. Sad

Then again, its at the end of the tank on a long haul flight so the cumulative contaminants over time could be the culprits too... guess we shall see...

All landings have to be happy

Not all endings are happy.
