Really? Is it hard for the police to find DVD stores without these tipoffs? Or I guess you just mean the police know where all the stores are but prefer to raid the ones that foreigners go to first.

Just because one is labeled a 'newbie' on this board does NOT mean they are a newbie to either Shanghai or China......
Some posters need to get over their 'title' and 'status'....

I find this raids business fascinating. I've been to Hollywood (the one at Jing'an) on a couple of occasions where all they have are Chinese movies and CDs well spaced out so the shelves don't look so bare. A couple of days later the shelves are full to bursting with the usual fare again. And last time I was there I was handed a card with a hand-written mobile phone number on it and told to call if I found the shop closed...

I'm presuming they are tipped off about raids...hence all the stuff being removed for a couple of days. Or does anyone have another explanation?
And if they are being raided...what's the point?

The point is to satisfy the US and WTO that they are clamping down on counterfeiters but not to stamp it out completely of course. If they wanted to they could easily do it.

But they are so obviously not clamping down...and if it's obvious to me then it must be obvious to the US and the WTO...that's what I don't understand. Don't get me wrong, though...I want them to stay open!

they stay open because no one is losing money, for now. if DVD's sold here for $20 or were rented for $5, no one would buy them. when the China market can afford a reasonable price for a dvd, then they will clamp down. for now, Hollywood is handing out free cigarettes so that people will be hooked once the market becomes legitimate.

update Hollywood has moved near Hotwind side of Parliment club.
Always go there prices ok, they have two floors now,seems they have downsized a fair but.Not as good selection as they used to on new stuff.

the old Sunday club on Yan an Lu is getting worse new staff,attitiude is sh%t but then is that included in the cost..maybe.

I tend to do what we all do browse,walk in,try the choice,if bitten don't go back.work out the odds and then try your luck again.
I am a newbie on SHExpat too,but been reading the foum for ages,just joined up recently.not sure why bored i guess.

there's a price on Zongshan park, near the 85 degrees cake place and parkson..

its says 15 but u can negotiate to 11 for a DVD9 however these place gives you super amazing boxs like i was like **** these look real..

so if u want to give some gifts to ppl back home, hit up this place lol

Just back from Dagu Lu...and a great meal at the Good Times Cafe...where, against my better judgment I popped into one of the DVD stores. Haven't liked them in the past but time moves on and they might have improved.

Anyway, they had a few of the movies I was looking out for so thought I'd take a chance. Mistake. One turned out to be an audience recording, another a copy of a review disc (the digital timer on screen was somewhat offputting).

Not a word from the assistants about what I was buying, in marked contrast to the, now four, reliable shops I usually frequent. There they seem to know what they're selling and are quick to tell me if a copy is not great.

Yes, I can take them back and complain but I feel sorry for the poor guys here on holiday and who have been told Dagu Lu is the place for good DVDs. It's not!

I like the one on Yuyuan Lu. near Wanhundu Lu. Never really noticed the name (Hollywood Video maybe?) despite going there for well over a year. The prices are fair and the girls that work there can speak English and will tell you if the copy is ok or not.

Another one I like is Broadway Video On Weihai Lu. near Maoming Lu. It's got a great selection that is well organized.

Yep, that's one of the good ones. Also, upstairs, they've got the best selection of music CDs I've seen. They even sell LPs!

I think it must depend on the shop you went to. I have bought over 1000 DVD's from Movie Star in Dagu Lu and I do not think I have had a single dud. I always ask them if it is a good copy though.
Sometimes I wonder across or down the road and get DVD's. I usually find about 1 in 10 is garbage. Therefore I never do this now.
I have been recommended Fox movies on Hong Mei Lu many times, but whenever I get DVD's from there the picture is great but the sound is terrible.
Does anyone know a good DVD store near the centre, in Jingan area?
There used to be a store called hollywood that I used, but has been closed for a while.

Has anyone bargained on Dagu Lu, particularly for purchasing a lot? I heard someone bargaining unsuccessfully once. I've always paid the 12 kuai per DVD9, but some postings make me think they should be cheaper.

I know they can be changed. But that's no consolation for the holidaymaker who only finds out the problems when he gets home.
As to price, I pay 9rmb for DVD9s.

I have bargained before for a lot of DVD's. To be honest with you it holds up the line and it seems to be a lot of hassle for a few RMB.
Now I just pay the price offered. Sometimes they knock off a few RMB as I am a regular.
I have now entered the wonderful world of downloads and get most of the series this way. Seems to take an age to get the releases in Shanghai currently.
I think that the Expo clamp down is going to make new releases nearly impossible to get.

LP's...wow. I need to visit this place. I still have a linn Sondek somewhere in storage. It would be great to play some black discs again!!!!!
Is this the place that you get DVD 9 for 9rmb?

A small selection of LPs and probably secondhand. Never looked through them in case I got hooked and then have too many to take home!
I think DVD9s there are 12rmb, although there are cheaper ones, without the plastic cases, upstairs. My 9rmb ones are at three little shops in JIng'an. I know how to get to them but don't know the street names. I'll take a note next time.

I checked out Oscars on Fengyang Lu this afternoon. I asked about the prices, and they said the DVD9s are 16rmb. Even when I said that all of the DVD shops on Dagu Lu sell for 12rmb he didn't offer any lower price, unless I was buying a lot...which the Ka De Club etc do anyway.
Anyone had any better luck with the DVD9 prices here?

I have, sadly, probably been in more DVD stores than most and 12rmb seems to be the going rate for the ones in plastic boxes, 10 or 9rmb for the ones in the flat packs and anything from 4 to 7rmb for DVD5s (some of which are great quality but lack the extra features). I've seen DVDs priced at up to 18rmb (not doubles) but, of course, I don't buy, there are so many other shops out there.
