Flew Out Jan 29 from Pudong to Chicago on United. 15 minute delay on departure. Chicago, however was a mess and my 2 hour connection to East Coast was delayed 9 hours in Chicago due to weather and crew/gate problems. Chicago cancelling many flights. Maglev ran fine.

Since today, Jan 31 is a Thursday, tomorrow is a Friday (at least in my calendar it is).
Good morning!

Here is a website that seem to be updated regularly throughout the day on the status of the flights. There is an alert that you can sign up for to get updated news directly on your mobile if you choose. So far for tomorrow Feb 1st, all seem to be in schedule. We are also flying out tomorrow night - seem like there will be many of us out there in PVG tomorrow. Have a safe flight and a good holiday wherever, whenever you get there Smile

I am keeping an eye for Friday's weather and here they are:-

Google 3C Partly cloudy
Wunderground 4C Partly cloudy
Weather.com 3C Partly cloudy
bbc.co.uk 1C Heavy snow, very poor visibility
Shanghai Metreo - only today's weather forecast

Hopefully the anticipated heavy snow will be downgraded just like the typhoon we recently had and delays will be minimal at PVG.

TG flight to BKK delayed...Not saying how long yet.
A few "cancelations" and "delayed" up on the board...
Where the heck is Muan anyway?

Heard from a friend who is in airport now, many are delayed, because they can't land. One of my friend's flight have to land in Beijing, so they don't know when that flight can be brought back to Shanghai... Long queue for food in airport...

I just heard the same thing- at some point (or maybe still), someone has said it's too dangerous to land so that prevented arrivals this morning.

Now it's at the point where they don't have any stands for planes to park so they can't let them land regardless of the state of the runway.

Will the Shanghai airports give priority to their domestic carriers when deciding which airplane gets to depart first in the midst of delays? Am deciding between China Eastern and Singapore Airlines (usually a no-brainer but I just want to get home this time!)

the guess here is that they let international flights go first, nobody knows which airlines get preference though.

Assuming the weather forecasts are correct and it's fine weather from tomorrow onwards, how long would it take for things to get back to normal again? Not an easy question to answer I know, but I have friends coming over on Thursday and we have a few hours after their arrival to get to the train station. If there's a huge backlog of flights I might have to think about rescheduling things.

No way to tell now, since more snow is forecast next week. I'm just hoping that my flight out of Hongqiao tomorrow morning isn't delayed too much

I flew from Hong Qiao successfully this morning. 10:45 flight delayed about 1 hour. Everything earlier was a mess. I assume Pu Dong must have been simila r. I have a couple of good pictures at the airport I could post. Unfortunately, I left the computer cable at home.

More harrowing than the weather was using China Southern airlines. This probably deserves another post, but heck it's vacation. No time now.

The short story is we connected to Bangkok via Guangzhou. China Southern does not have the service of booking your bags to the final destination and issuing boarding passes to your final destination. Because of this, we allowed for a 2.5 layover in Guangzhou so we could retrieve our bags, and then check in again.

As it happens, because of weather, we arrived one hour late in the domestic terminal. It took 30 minutes for the bags to come out. Knowing there was a VERY long distance between domestic baggage claim and the international check in area, China Southern sent a representative to escort everyone to that area. With now 45 minutes before flight time, 15 minutes before boarding time, they had a severe problem at the check-in counter. No seats. Apparently they treated everyone as if we were on stand-by and did not recognize we were alredy booked. There were 19 people affected by this. Then after this confusion, we had to take our normal size bags to the oversized luggage check-in. Following securtity screening it was 10 minutes before flight take off. We flag down a representative and ask them to hold the plane. Turns out they had to get a separate bus to take the 19 of us.

I am sure the plane was going nowhere. They can't afford to lose money. But never say never. On the plane thins were just as bad. They actually run out of soda before they get to my row. LOL. My poor son. No 7up or Sprite. The headphones for the movie were remiscent of a child's play stethoscope and they do not work. Also the ear pads also kept coming off. They were all that flimsy. The list of minor things went on and on.

So that makes two airlines on my no fly list: China Southern and China Eastern. China Eastern is the United Airlines of China. They will gladly offer large numbers of flights to popular destinations to capture yur business. Seemingly so convenient Yet they have no intention of actually flying all those planes. Rather, once they have stolen your business from competitors, they cancel several flights to combine passengers into one plane that is profitable to fly. All it costs them is some beer, soda and cookies to partially appease the passengers while they wait angrily. With an active 8 year old on my hands it is quite the miserable experience. I think, "was it worth saving $400 US for round trip travel for all three of us to suffer so much?"? We can afford it, so we will not fly China Eastern again.

BTW-one funny story. One that may only happen in China. When China Eastern posts a paper sign "the plane is delayed and we do not know when it will be rescheduled", pandimonium breaks out An old Chinese lady shreds the sign and the crowd yells at the poor airline employees and takes videos. LMAO.
