| Post subject: A quick banking question. |
At the momment, I'm not in Shanghai to handle my account I have with Bank of CHina.
Can my gf make a deposit on my behalf without the passbook of savings account or atm card?
In the States, for example, I'd fill out a bank deposit slip with the name, date, account number and deposit the funds, pretty simple and quick.

Yes of course! Just give her the numbers on your ATM card and the account holders name and voila! Deposit made! I often use this method to send rent payments to my landlord. Should work the same for you.... |

No need to show ID when depositing into another's account unless the amount is substantial -- something over 50k RMB. |

i hv deposited money into my frd's account at BOC and also ICBC in small amounts of less than CNY10k and each time they ask me for my passport. the only bank that dont require this is BoComm. This happened to me at least 10 times in BOC and twice at ICBC |

I deposit money into my accounts at BOC and ICBC frequently without the account book or card and have never been asked for ID. |

Could depend on the person and/or branch!
Fickle Chinese banks.
I have deposited into accounts that aren't mine at Minsheng, just took a previous deposit slip, no ID needed. |

naturally. that is because you have an account at BOC and ICBC and they have all your details. i dont have an account at those places and not looking or sounding like a local, they would ask me for a id or passport. strangely they wont ask my local colleagues when they deposit into their friend's account |

My Australian colleague also deposited in someone else's account at BOC without a passport...
I used to deposit at ICBC into a previous landlord's account using just a deposit slip, no ID required.
They're probably being fickle when you deposit. |

I don't know, but never had a problem. Maybe I'll see when I deposit money next time into my wife's account.
Maybe there is a new rule. |

white, yup.
But I have a Chinese face as well.
You may just be a bit unlucky - though its not really much to complain about right? Just a little bit extra inconvenience of having to carry ID |

A way around the ID issue should you not feel like showing ID is just go to the ATM machine and transfer from your account to theirs. |

If you deposit into an account without the actual passbook or card, it is not actually a deposit but rather considered a transfer (no charges though, if within the same bank). And for foreigners most banks are likely to ask for your passport even for RMB100, I think it applies to Chinese as well.
To deposit into your own account you should not need a passport unless for a huge amount.
If your girl friend has a card from the same bank then it is easier to get it done through the ATM machines or online banking (if she has applied for that). |

Wrong.
If you notice carefully the Chinese characters on the receipt, it's a deposit.
Few people report being asked for ID. I regularly deposit money into my aiyi's bank account and have never been asked for ID. I also deposit into my own or my wife's without using either the bankbook or ATM card and have never been asked for ID.
There is a rule about checking ID for non-Chinese nationals when depositing into a US$ account, though. Not sure what the limit is. |

Yinlin, since you seem to be on your best behavior this afternoon, I will not say anything negative to you.
As long as you have your ATM card, you only need the other individual's account number at the same bank to transfer via ATM.
There are some newer ATMs that permit deposits without having to even insert your ATM card. The Agricultural Bank has some of these ATMs -- actually called cash Depsoit Machines -- that will allow you to make a deposit simply by indicating on the touch screen the account number to deposit to and then insert the cash. This only works, though, for RMB transactions.
P.S. I have also seen these CDMs that allow cardless deposits at another bank, but I can't recall which one. Seems like it could be either CITIC Bank, PuFa or China Merchants. |

FYI, update for you guys, my gf said she was able to deposit the funds, no problem. I have access to their online banking (http://www.sh.bank-of-china.com/en/), and the amount I told my gf to deposit wasn't over 10,000RMB
Thanks for everyone replies.

Well, the bills I have say clearly 转帐 (transfer) while when you deposit providing the card you will get a 存款 (deposit) bill. |

But I deposit into an account without a card, or passbook, and the slip is still the deposit slip... |
