HDXLCR - its about timing.

You need to start with the phone off.
You need to let go of the power before it boots basically. (So,hold power, home, for 9seconds, let go of power at the 10th second), keep holding home for another 10 seconds or so, then can let go.

Can bring it to my office and i show you (for free).
its not that hard, really!

izzy - put the phone in DFU mode.
Download one of the firmware from my site for 2.1

This one is perfect for you (and HDXLCR)
http://www.iphonesim.cn/files/index.php?dir=2.0%20Pwnage%20and%20hacke d%20firmware/&file=Phonev1%202.10%20Firmware%20PWND%20%20with%20Boot%2 0Neuter.ipsw

Shift, Restore in iTunes to choose the firmware, and install it.

Cheers mate - managed to do it in the end and so far working great.

HDXLCR, for putting into recovery mode I found that keeping it pluged in via USB was a lot easier!

Thanks for the offer but you have already done too much (for free), I wouldn't mind paying you for help but I learn more from grunting through it and I work some long hours so can't get to you during office hours anyway.

I really think I have something else wierd going on with my iphone. If having a black screen and being told that I have an iphone that needs restoring when I plug it into itunes means I am in DFU mode, I am there. I have done the 10 second/20 second routine many, many times and have tried varying the timing +/- 2 seconds. No matter what I do, it always gives me the 1600 error. I may try dowloading a different version of the firmware and see if that is the problem. I also read that itunes 8 may be the issue so I may try to downgrade.

Thanks again for your help. Your explaination has enabled me to get much further than I would have otherwise and now I know what I am doing (basically), it just doesn't seem to work on my phone.

No, it just means you aren't in DFU mode if you get error 1600.

Izzy managed it Smile

It means your smarter than me. The only difference I can see is that you were already unlocked an my phone is virgin. I have verified that I am in DFU mode and am still getting the 1600 error code. I see from some of the forums I have checked online that I am not the only one. Must be the way my computer or itunes 8.0 is configured on my machine. Just need to figure out the trick.

I was reading that Apple is going to release the 3G Iphone in the China market but 3G and Wifi will be disabled .

I can understand about not having 3G, because China doesn't have the networks, but why would they remove wifi?

I believe you and have no doubt that I am doing something wrong but when I follow the instructions and verify each step and get a different result, there has to be a difference somewhere. I even found an alternative method for entering DFU, with a video showing it being done, and duplicated it with the same results.

My guess would be a computer configuration difference. I did find a website that had a forum where several were having the same issue. There was a posting about a downgrading the firmwhere first which worked for several people. I will try that this weekend.

Again, thanks for your help. I would never have gotten this far without your guidance. If I could get to you with my computer and iphone I would gladly pay for your help, just working too many hours.

Success! I had to use the instructions I found here so if anyone else should have any issues with error codes you may want to have a look.

http://www.modmyi.com/forums/pwnage/347091-got-rid-error-5-6-1600-yay. html

Thanks again for all your help. Now I have to play with it and see what else I can do now that it is unlocked.

Has anyone tried using this simhack to unlock a 3g iphone? http://www.vavolo.com/productdetails.asp,mode,1,ProductID,4763,,.htm

Is it legit or just wordsplay? "Latest Version with Most Possible Stable Signal Receiving". And what does it mean by "long lasting and durable solution"? will simhack deteriorate in some way at some point that it cant be used anymore and has to be replaced?

Why are any of you worried about unlocking the 3G iPhone when you can buy it in Hong Kong unlocked from the Apple store or any other Apple reseller WITHOUT A CONTRACT??

Mostly, because most people have a 2G, and those get locked when you do firmware updates.
Or, because people are cheap and buy locked 3g's.

One of those 2, I'm sure Wink

Im sure i belong to the second group that CS described, but then again im pretty sure that someone out there would come out with a stable way to unlock 3g, be it via software or sim hack. I'll give it a month or two and if by then there arent any other way to safely unlock 3g.. I'll have no other choices than to buy an unlocked one Crying or Very sad

I'm sure eventually there will be a software unlock for the 3g, but until that happens, its Apple's way of making sure that (marginally) cheaper US product can't be used elsewhere.

16 GB 3G from Apple, without a contract, uses any SIM card from any telephone provider only costs $6400 Hong Kong Dollars.

How much is a locked version?

I'm puzzled as to how is the unlocked HK version news?

Suppliers / Stores have been selling them since they came out, all the unlocked ones come from either HK, Italy or NZ.

Ooops, I was wrong - it's $6200 HKD.

http://store.apple.com/hk/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone?cid=AO SAPQ109.comiPhone

From Apple.com/hk:

iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation.

All this stuff is far too confusing for a simple mind such as mine. Lets say I want to buy an iphone for use in China. I have a China mobile account with an unlimited data contract. I need to sync with my PC to store contact and use itunes. Reliability and functions are most important than price.

I should therefore buy a XXXX

The best place for me to buy it would be YYYY

I should expect to pay ZZZZ

What are XXXX, YYYY and ZZZZ

They were 1400 rmb in the US a while ago. Don't know about now. Maybe that was the 8 gig version but still, quite a difference.

I got a free iTouch at the time, not so sure I like it. Gave it to the Assistant in fact ... they look great but aren't that lovely to use. The little stick input method works better.

1400 rmb for the US version is the 8gb model with a 2 year contract to ATT. Signing up with a contract is the big difference, so you can't compare the US $199/$299 prices they are quoting.
