| Post subject: where to live with 16 month old |
Hi,
My husband and I are considering moving to Shanghai in a couple months with our daughter, she will be about 16mo when we move. We are going to start with a 6month move and extend if we like it.
Currently we live in NYC and my daughter and I spend our days out and about in the stroller going to playgroups, classes and parks, also shopping. My husband's office is in Jing An and he will have to travel several days a week, so easy access to both Jing An and the airport is key, as I dont want him wasting his time commuting.
Can anyone recommend areas of town that we should consider? We would love to have a villa with outdoor space, but I think given that I need things to and we want a short commute, so an apartment is where I guess we will end up.
Thanks for any advice you might have. |

You might actually consider Jingan area. There are lots of newer complexes north of Beijing Rd. If your husband will be flying out of Pudong airport, its far no matter where you live, but there is an airport shuttle that leaves from nanjing rd near jingan temple often.
You should get a good agent to show some places. You can get a sense what is out there at http://cityspace.shanghaiexpat.com. |

Depends which airport your husband is most likely to use. If Pudong (mostly international flights), then Century Park is about midway with less than 1/2 hour commute on line 2 subway to JingAn and less than 1/2 hour commute to Pudong airport geting to, waiting and taking Maglev. Park is somewhat similar in size and offerings to Central Park and there is plenty of local shopping, other expat kids, etc. around that area.
Best to rent a serviced apartment for a few weeks to look around and find the option you like the best and is the most convenient to all your needs. |

I agree with Renovator, and would recommend around Pudong Century Park area too if you have a small child and want to spend time outdoors with her. Puxi is much more happening and has more shops, but it's also extremely crowded and hectic with car horns blasting everywhere and hardly any green space for a toddler to play in. Pudong in comparison is much more calm and open, and Century Park is great for a day out with baby. There are also lots of other expat families in the area with children so your little girl can get some interaction with other kids.
A short-term service apartment is definitely the way to go in the beginning before you have an idea of the city and what you like/not like... Good luck! |
